  1. Your Geobuddy program was a indespencible tool for the way I manage waypoints. I hope you were compensated well for the hard work you put into GeoBuddy. I'm glad to hear that an organization like Topografix will be carrying on the development of the program - I always used EasyGps with GB anyway so this mariage seems perfect. Thanks again.
  2. If you were refering to our opinions being diferent Anders I don't think they are. I do believe the Vista does have its place. The Vista is the device that has features that one must justify the price difference for. I do believe that if you need 24MB or want the e compass then you will have to shell out some more money for those features. In my case the features were not worth the price difference. Like I said 8MB is enough for me, I have a magnetic compass, triangulation elevation is good enough, and I don't care about barometric pressure cause I can't change it. In the Venture vs the Yellow, and the Legend vs the Venture (which this thread is about) I do believe that the price difference is worth it to step up one level.

  4. Here is my 2 cents: Upgrade to the Legend! For the $80 you will get a half decent basemap included that will show you roads and highways, Major city streets, and 8MB of memory to load Mapsource maps (at a later date if you want). Just the ability to "upgrade" the maps in my opion is worth it. I agree the Venture is the right choice if you were looking to buy a Yellow - however I feel a Legend is the right choice if you were looking to buy a Venture. However I don't believe that a Vista is the right choice if you were looking at a Legend. The Vista does have more memory 24MB butI don't use all my 8MB on the Legend, The Vista does have an E Compass but my $2 pocket compass does the job, The vista has an Altimiter that is more accurate than the Legends GPS triangulation but I can live with the acuracy of the triangulation. And finally not much I can do about the weather even if I knew how to use the barometer Okay maybe it was 25 cents worth.

  6. The basemap in the 76S I'm guessing is going to be the same as in the Legend and the Vista. MAJOR roads are there and some of the waterways. It's better than nothing but I suppliment with Streets and Trips (Pocket version on a WinCE device) for the urban areas. I have yet to interface my GPS with the PDA. As for Canadain Topo data I'm unaware of any way of getting it into the GPS. From whatI've been able to see the Gemtrek maps are the best for the Banff/JAsper/Kananaskis areas.
  7. I'm not sure you can download non-Garmin data into their GPSs. The best I've been able to do here in Calgary is to use the Canadian Mapsource CD. YOu can preview the detail on Garmin's website. There is no Topo data and the street detail is something to be desired in the metro areas other than what is covered on the CD (Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa). If you are planning on any type of hiking a good quality paper map will be a necessity and I highly recomennd the Gemtrek series (www.gemtrek.com) the quality of the maps are excellent! PS. There are some very difficult caches at the summit of a couple of Banff landmark mountians. Good Luck!
  8. I use a old Windows CE device and two programs that work very well - Microsoft Pocket Streets and Avantgo with a link to www.pathetique.com/geocaching. To get my waypoints into MS Streets and Trips I use GeoBuddy (www.geobuddy.com)I then export the area into Pocket Streets and include all geocaches. This really is just about everything I need and works extremely well. Ocationally I will even use the voice recorder to make notes of the cache or record what I logged in the log book. A palm device would work well for the Avantgo piece but having Pocket Streets sure helps alot. BTW I have not had and pushpins ofset like others are complaining about in Pocket Streets.
  9. Avantgo support for web pages has been set up - check out http://pathetique.com/geocaching/ If your area is not set up you can make a request and they might get added. It sure works well. I used Pocket Streets 2001 and the pushpins worked fine.
  10. Wildcards, You need to change 60E13 From value 98 to E8 and 60E14 change the value 3A to 03 to get a 1 second update or you can change 0x60E13 From value 98 to D0 and 60E14 change the value 3A to 07 to get a 2 second update That is 98 3A becomes E8 03 for 1 second That is 98 3A becomes D0 07 for 2 seconds
