    I'm back!

Wow! It's been a few years! I have a 4 year old daughter now who I've introduced to geocaching and she's super pumped! We've found a bunch of caches in the past two days - feels good to be back. The forums seem a bit dead... Are there other places people chat? Slack? Something liie that? Any New Hampshirites out there in the Antrim area?
  2. I have an eTrex (yellow, basic) and the 60CS, and I haven't used an external antenna on the 60CS -- but here is my two cents anyway. I thought that when I go the 60CS I would be floored by the accuarcy and the quad-helix antenna, etc. But I haven't really been that impressed. The other features of the unit (like the street maps) are awesome, but when it comes to finding a geocache, I actually prefer my little eTrex (I use the 60CS in the car for driving and gettting to the cache area). For a while I took both of the units out and would compare accuracy and reception... performance for me was about the same. People who hide caches aren't using dead-on accurate instruments, so even if your unit is accurate to 1ft you will probaly have to search around for the cache. On another note, I use the 60CS for making trail maps, and have bought a Gilsson antenna (waiting for it to arrive) to see if I can improve my accuracy... jake
  3. I didn't go through all 17 pages of this topic, but I did poke around and look at the FAQ... I have tracks saved in my 60CS on a trail system that I am mapping. I deleted the active tracks, but I would like to be able to display the saved route on the screen while I am out so I don't follow the same trail again. Is there a way to display a saved route without following it?
  4. So should I just download it again and everything will be hunky dory?
  5. I did find that I could move tracks in ExpertGPS... I "averaged" my tracks visually and just snipped out the spikes and abberations. It worked fairly well, but it is a little expensive for how much I will use it. My problem with USAPhotoMaps is that it crashes everytime I try to import the tracks from my 60CS. I even tried exporting it as .csv and importing it into USAPhotoMaps, but the same thing happened... jake
  6. Wow thanks for the tips! I started playing around with a trial version of ExpertGPS last night and it seemed to do the king of things I wanted it to do... except for being able to drag track points around. I get the point about a 20ft error on a map, but I was hoping to make a scalable pdf that someone could use to zoom in to one particular trail and see the curves and turns. I will try your suggestions out and let you guys know how it went! jake
  7. Hello everybody... I use a Garmin 60CS and MapSource Topo and am in the process of making a map of a local trail system. Does anyone know of any software or methods for averaging/consolidating multi tracks down the same trail into one track? Also, I can't seem to find anyway to export my new map into something like an Adobe product for output or scalability. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! jake
  8. TNLNSL = The Natural Landmark Nearby Sometimes Levitates I sat here and tried a few others... but do to a lack of inspiration I have failed to compose anything witty enough to post here. Well... anything that wasn't to dirty and perverted. jake
  9. My TB is out in the world... I am afraid that he isn't moving to well... I guess I should have tried a different tack. I thought that a soldier on leave might have been able to grab him from the TB hotel that I first dropped him off in. Oh well. I is good to see your is moving. jake
  10. Yeah... ok they are back. I tried in two different browers, and changed options and no icons. But now they are there. Patience grasshopper. Thanks. jake
  11. I looked around the old threads and saw similiar questions, but didn't really find any answers.... Why would I not have any icons on my map? (From the Map It feature)? The only icons I can see are the red checks for my found/own caches. No other caches appear on the map until I click on a section and then I will get the numbers corresponding to the list... Where oh where did my icons go? jake
  12. This travel bug made was released by a cacher from Southern New Hampshire, made it all the way to California and was grabbed by a cacher from Massachusettes. (The two cachers even know each other!) What are the chances of that! jake
  13. Thanks everybody for the help! I was leaning towards the 60cs, and now I think that is definately the way to go... The iQue just seemed a little to fragile to me (as was confirmed by your comments), and I wasn't sure how it would hold to caching.
  14. How does the iQue perform as a geocaching tool? Do any of you actually use it in the woods to find caches, or is it really just usefull for car navigation. My father is going to get into this sport and wants a nice setup for paperless caching. (I personally use a palm m125 and a garmin eTrex...) I thought that the iQue seemed like a good idea, but I haven't been able to find much info specifically relating to Geocaching. The other option I am thinking about for him is the 60cs, which has a geocaching mode that will display hints, let you mark as found, etc... This GPSr is far more appealing to me, but it would seem that you would still want cache pages in the form of printouts, or a palm pilot to suppliment your info... Thanks for the help! jake
  15. Did anyone go look at the poison ivy rash slideshow?
  16. Thanks for the advice everybody! I am going to do a lot of thinking about this.... jake
  17. I feel a little odd posting after such a definitive answer from Jeremy... but one way you could find out who is watching your cache (or at least the people who want you to know...) is to post a note in your cache log and see if anyone responds. I have thought of doing this for mine (there are a couple of watchers), but just haven't gotten around to it.
  18. Wow... I have been reading through the forums and looking at various web sites trying to decide which unit to buy. I know this type of question gets asked all of the time, but I had do it anyway... sorry. I currently use the Garmin eTrex (yellow), but I am going to be purchasing a new unit. My only limit is that I can't spend more than $1000.... Now, I like the Garmin unit that I currently use and I know people are going to argue Magellan vs. Garmin, so let's say that I am going to stick with the Garmin line of products. (Unless someone is really persuasive.) If you had $1000 to spend on a new unit, what would you buy and why? (I have been reading about the pros and cons of the 60cs vs the 76cs, but I think that if I buy the cheaper one I could also get a new computer... so anyway....) Is it really worth it to spend the money on a high end unit, when the eTrex has been doing a fine job for me? Thanks! jake
  19. My original question did involve the "site:" feature of Google... but the advanced search feature is perfect. I don't know how I missed that! Grrr... Thanks! jake
  20. Well, at least you had one person who knew what you were talking about. For everyone else, I think that it wouldn't be prudent to explain why this is funny... ummm... if you do a certain something in the next couple of months, maybe you can find this amusing as well. jake
  21. I know I saw someone reference a way that one could search the gc.com website using google to find words in the descriptions of TBs... I just can't remember what it was. Any help?
  22. You know... I heard about that place -- wasn't there a news piece a couple of years ago about how they were paying the government to make it a no fly zone? The one thing I learned at school was that they have some pretty viscious animals in the woods there.
  23. Ha ha... you know I went there when I first started looking at the forums and found all kinds of info... I guess my brain was just not making any connections at all.
  24. I keep seeing TPTB... I have done a couple of searches for it and nothing turned up except more TBTBs... no definitions. So, it finally hit me square in the head today! "The Powers That Be"!!!! Am I correct? I hope so. jake edit - spelling
