  1. Thanks for the suggestions! Lower screen resolution for road navigation could be a problem indeed. I was in Venice/Italy last week (where my OR got stolen) and I found map redraws to be painfully slow. I'm not sure if this was related to the bad reception (very small streets) or the map (City Navigator) but map redraws took around 5-7 seconds each time I shifted the map with my finger. I have never had such bad performance on the OR anywhere else. Are there any other differences in performance between the Oregon and the Dakota, except map redraws?
  2. Hi, my Oregon was stolen last week. What I want now is a quick and responsive GPS for car navigation and hiking. I am considering a Dakota especially if map redraws and/or switching menus is faster. Another option would be a Nokia cell phone with GPS which would give me phone+GPS into one. I'm afraid that Nokia phones have way too many problems though. At least that's what people say on forums, etc. All suggestions are welcome. Thanks!
  3. I have occasional freezes during startup. No shutoffs. Stopped time indicator performance is still horrible. Without tree cover false stopped time is 3-5% of the total time. With tree cover it's up to 30%. I wonder if that will ever get fixed. Other than that my OR seems pretty accurate now, although I'm only comparing tracks I've recorded along the same route. Has anyone compared it to the 60csx?
  4. There should be a new update soon to fix those issues. I almost upgraded to 3.12 but with all the bad reports I think I'll wait a couple more days. I have another interesting problem with 3.10. Sometimes the map is turned upside down or sideways during autorouting. I have tried turning off the compass (in demo mode only) which seems to fix the problem
  5. Does the OR turn off by itself? I get the same message with version 3.10 when I manually turn the unit on/off ...
  6. I don't know if this is related to the same problem but today I got this. A power cycle fixed it. You cannot delete it because "*" is illegal in file names. Try using a different file manager, for example Total Commander. You can also try renaming it and then deleting it. Or drag it to the recycle bin. If nothing helps look here. Backup the data on the GPS before running chkdsk just to be on the safe side.
  7. Agreed. But the problem could still be resolved if the unit takes some time to verify whether it's position really changed rather than immediately logging stopped time. Especially at speeds under 5-6 km/h. Most of the time you're either walking or resting. No surprises here I guess By the way, I found my first cache today. It was a night cache in a forest. A bit scary but rewarding
  8. Well said Maingray! I made a couple of screenshots which show the problem with the stopped time indicator. In both cases I have walked continuously for the time indicated (stopped time + moving time), so reported stopped time should be 0:00. Screenshot #1. Taken after a hike along the base of a mountain. Screenshot #2. Taken at a park with no high terrain around. The big difference in the stopped time/moving time ratio is interesting. The error in the mountain is bigger, despite better GPS accuracy. I didn't pay attention to the satellite page but it's possible that some birds were behind the mountain.
  9. I noticed some improvement in the moving/stopped time indicator, however under tree cover it is still very inaccurate and practically useless. Today I went on a short hike with the GPS clipped on top of my backpack. After 40 minutes walking at an average speed of 4 km/h, the GPS showed 20 minutes stopped time. GPS accuracy was good - 4~9 meters. Email sent to Garmin. I also miss the detour function for car navigation from the Colorado. The fastest way to force a recalculation on the OR is via Where to?>Recalculate off road, Where to?>Recalculate on road. If you haven't selected a point on the map you could also do it via Where to?>Find another>Recent finds>(top most destination). Takes about 10 seconds, but can be quite distracting while you drive.
  10. Hello. This is my first post on the Groundspeak forum. A new Oregon means, I hope, updates for all Oregons for another few months...
