  1. I have just got a Palm which is probably 3 or 4 years old. I was given it so that I could download the pages with the description of the caches so that I would not have to print out so many pieces of paper when I went caching. Can someone advise me what I need to do to get the cache pages on to my Palm. Thanks very much airporter
  2. When I go out caching I load up the caches into my GPS unit with a small amount of information such as name and difficulty, but I like to also have the description, the last date found and the clue which do not fit into my GPS unit. As far as I can see it I have 3 options. One is to invest in a pocket computer and have all the cache pages in there. Two is to write everything out on a piece of paper, three is to cut and paste the relevant details into Word and then print them out. I go for option 3 as I like to spend my time doing other things than writing and I do not have the money for a pocket computer. Even option 3 takes some time. Does anybody have any ideas how I can get these details more efficiently into a form that I can take caching with me.
  3. P.S. There are quite a few regular caches in the park.
  4. I was not able to include this as an official geocaching event but thought that many people on the list would be interested. The Rocky Mountain Orienteering Club is holding a beginner's orienteering event which will include some GPS orienteering. This is the first time that we have done this so it should be fun. A map will be given to you of the area together with a list of coordinates. Your task is to visit each of the coordinates and mark where they are on the map. The fastest person or team around will win although points will be deducted for inaccuracy. This is an ideal way for all of the family to learn both GPS and map reading skills while having some outdoor fun. More detailed information can be found at the club's website: http://www.fortnet.org/RMOC/content/view/73/107/ I hope that many people can come. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at amtrentthomas@juno.com. Also if you have any ideas of how to spread word of the event that would be appreciated. Alex
  5. I am both an avid geocacher and an active member of the Rocky Mountain Orienteering Club and have been trying to think of ways to link these two activities up as there is lots of cross over. Geocachers use GPS units but often do not relate them to a map in the detail that orienteering needs and orienteers have yet to discover the wonders of GPSing. I have up with a concept where participants are given a blank map of the area in question and then are given a list of coordinates. The object is to go to each coordinate and then and mark it on the map with a cross. The first person / team around is the winner but points are deducted for each mm away the cross is from the true location. What are people's thoughts on advertising this as an official event cache on geocahcing.com even though it will be run by the Rocky Mountain Orienteering Club and also if you can think of any improvements to the concept it would be much appreciated. airporter
  6. I have just lost my much loved Vista C+ and need to go out a buy something new that does tracking and ca download all information to the computer. I'm trying to save a few dollars and noticed that the Garmin Venture C+ is virtualy the same and the Vista C+ except that it does not come with any software or a USB cable. I have not lost any of the accessories, only the unit and as far as I see, other than the compass the Venture has the same features as the Vista. Am I missing something here or should I just go out and get a venture??
  7. Does anyone know where I could find a list of Caches in Wales? I realize that technicaly it is part of the UK, but is does have its own identity and I would like find some caches there. I know that I can go in a type a postcode but just wonder if there was a list out there somewhere.
  8. Even though I have been geocaching for quite some time, I am new to the whole geocoin element of it. I won a geocoin in a raffle. I think that it is unactivated. It is in a packet with an acitvation code sticker. Where can I go to find out if this coin is activated or not. thanks
  9. I'm curious to find out what techniques people use to find the caches. Until recently I used to write the coordinates down on a small card (the type you use when giving speeches) and then walk around until the numbers on my geocache matched up with the numbers on the card. I have now taken to entering the co-ords into my GPS and then using the distance and bearing functions. Does anybody use a magnetic compass? I have thought about doing that and would probably have served me well a few times. Also is there anybody out there who uses UPS co-ords. I did once. Its not natural though. Yours Curious
  10. I am looking for an external re radiating antenna suitable for use with a Garmin Vista C. Does anybody have one or can point me in the direction of where to get one. Thanks Alex
  11. I have just bought a Garmin Legend C and am looking to sell my basic Etrex. It is less than a year old and works as good as new. $70. Let me know if you are interested. You can email me at amtrentthomas@juno.com
