Could it be an email issue?
It COULD be, but I've cleaned out my "blocked e-mail" (there are none), the Groundspeak autonotifier is in my address book and the notification for YOUR response to THIS thread came through just fine.
Maybe it's a Poison Oak thing!

I've been having some problems with the Tracking Topics component of the forum for some time now. I use this feature in other online forums without issue, but it's just not working for me here.
Let me backtrack - it USED to work BEAUTIFULLY! But over the past year, it's been spotty and now it doesn't work at all. Here's what I've done.
When at Groundspeak Forums > Geocaching Groups by Region / State > West and Southwest > Poison Oak Cachers I click "reply," type my message, click the "notify" box, then click "add reply." Under "My Controls" if I "view topics" I see it there, but I don't receive the notifications anymore.
I know, I had to click on the link and check out the forum in order to receive additional notification, but I'm not GETTING any in the first place
I have tried unsubscribing and resubscribing - no dice.
Please help...I'm missin' out on my local cachin' events!

I tried it. You get Groundspeak notices about technical stuff related to the forum program, but nothing from this particular forum. Good idea, though. Too bad they don't have RSS for each thread!
GeoCats gave me a ring, so Mr. B, Baby Boo, Eekuh and I are ready for Saturday morning's jaunt. It's drizzling now (can we really call it rain?) but I'm holding out hope for a wonderful morning - or at least coffee with friends in Los Osos!
Jim - I'd offer a ride, but we're not coming straight home. We have a bunch of errands (gift shopping) to do on our way (via Morro Bay, SLO and Pismo). I suspect we won't be home 'til dinnertime, no matter how short our geojaunt is.

I just went online and found the PGE site for the trail and have printed out a release form I will bring for each of us to give to the guard.
I just talked to Jim and he's all for it.
We can meet either at
CADS Coffee House - 1056 Los Osos Valley Rd, Los Osos
or
Starbucks -1230 Los Osos Valley Rd # 1, Los Osos
I'll check their hours and let you know which one. I'm not a big Starbucks fan and will see if CADS is open that time on Saturday. But we have backup for our coffee. And meeting at a coffee shop beats standing around at a trailhead until everyone assembles.
Gosh, this sounds fun.
Be sure to bring something for lunch.
THIS SOUNDS GREAT TO Me! (Particularly the coffee house somewhere other than Starbucks - I like to shop locally.) What time?

So, OP, what's up for Saturday. I have it on my calendar but have not seen much about it. Is it just you and I again? That's fine too but hopefully we can get a few others to join us.
Things have been crazy and I have not gotten out like I want to. Maybe more in November.
Thanks for the welcome home! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I'm still having issues with Groundspeak which does NOT notify me when something posts here. I'm going to try unsubscribing from the topic tonight, and resubscribing. Perhaps that will refresh it.
What's this about a hike along the new Montana de Oro trail in November? I may be up for that! Maybe the whole family will be up for it, but I'm available on my own most Fridays, with the whole family Saturdays as well as in the afternoon Sundays, and just the girls and me the remaining days of the week. I suspect this is a fairly easy (flat) trail.
The girls did GREAT on our trip, completing a few relatively long hikes, the last 5.1 miles in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico. Not bad for an ALMOST 6 year old!
We meandered, explored, snacked, enjoyed the scenery. We had nowhere to be and all day to get there, so that's just about what we did - a 5 hour, 5 mile hike! Nothing like leisurely hiking! Jen

HOWDY! Well, my caching has been spotty this past 9 weeks. I thought we'd cache in each state (17) as we passed through, but there was SO Much to see and do that we didn't always time to hunt down a cache. Sometimes we hunted, didn't find and just let it go at that. BUT we did find our first Canada cache, some nice ones along Route 66, and a bunch in Washington that have been on my list for years.
I notice my caches here had some spurts of visitors while I was away. Someone also placed a cache about 300 yards from my front door in the private park here. I know they didn't seek permission (I've been forced onto the HOA board...ugh!), but I'm not likely to complain!
Geo_Cats- you got a new 5th wheel!? You lucky... uh... Did you see the trailer we scored JUST before we took off for our trip? It's about 13 feet long (including tongue length) with no potty, but it was still a huge step up from our tent livin'! Maybe next time we head out we'll have to take your fifth out for a stretch!
Anyone heard from PointSalJim? I haven't heard from him since an e-mail I received in...I think it was August. Can't seem to raise him. Everything alright around here?
The girls and I are sticking close to home after 9,611 miles on the road in 9 weeks or so. If you want to see the pix, check out the blog. They'll be there for awhile (jenpb.blogspot.com)

Hear hear! I tried Waymarking, too. Not at all interesting in my area. Too bad. I think it's because the virtuals I did take part in were, for the most part, interesting in some way or another - historically, geologically, or just plain comedy!

I don't usually do this, but I had to share this e-mail PointSalJim sent me today. Anyone noticed how much he's changed since he picked up geocaching? Well, it's not JUST the caches...
"That's cool that you rode your bike to Old Orcutt on Friday to take care of some errands..i see that you also did some caching you triple multi/multi tasker.......Whenever time permits I always try to walk or ride or hike to my destination, take the stairs instead of the elevator, climb the East Face of Whitney instead of hike the traditional trail, paddle my surfboard to Hawaii....yikes !I better get started if I am going to make Lois's graduation on the 21st."

Wow...this looks really impressive! I'd be keen on something like this, though I'm not much into the competition. (I find it tough to balance my competitive spirit with parenting responsibility, so I maintain that child-safety issue as my priority...go figure!) STILL, I'd love to take part in any way our family could. Certainly we'd be up for some hunts, perhaps even helping place the hides and helping to think up games for others, plus we're ALWAYS up for s'mores!
I know some other members of POC have mentioned an interest in a group cachin' camp weekend. Anyone? Anyone?

Should we have our own forum in place there, or should we continue our forum presence here?

OreoPony got so excited after our last gathering that she secured the web address. While my page building skills are elementary, I was energized by our last gathering, too, and have decided to offer my rudimentary pages to get us off the ground. What the heck! The page can always be redesigned, updated and upgraded as our skill progress. smile.gif There's also an associated blog that will be open to POC members. To become one of the authors, drop a line to OreoPony or me. Members who are active in local activities, active hiders, active seekers and active posters to this forum will all be considered.

Maybe your spam blocking software or your internet provider is blocking the notices. I get most of them but sometimes I fail to get a notice.
If your browser allows tabs I would create a homepage that opens several tabs, one being the forums.
Good guess re: spam blocker, but I've checked there and nothing's in the spambotbox It's been an ongoing problem. (For instance, I didn't get a notice about your post.)
I do use tabs, but as this is a family shared computer, I usually set it up with a range of activities for the girls, so they tab through the pages as they complete each...something fun in math, language arts, art, science...the internet is just a TREASURE trove, isn't it?
I'll just whine...it gets more attention!

And other information as well. For instance, I found a GSAK Macro on Clyde's forums that puts the cache description into the notes section of an ipod. (Helpful for those times when I forget my Palm)
That got me thinking how much information could be learned if we had a nice afternoon session of "How do you do? (Geocaching)" We could bring our Palms, laptops & GPS (and leave the travel bugs at home).
I'm not totally committed to the 1st of March, but am throwing that out there to stir up discussion.
Well, GC.com/forums has let me down again. I guess I should just make this page my homepage so I can keep up!
OP sent me a note about the March 1 event. Good thing, because i missed out on ALL this discussion. Unfortunately I can't be there 3/1 due to previous commitment (something about coaching a gaggle of kids, driving them to the meet and back again...I dunno...maybe they'd rather be cachin'....)
May 4 should work for me for the other event.

I can tell ya what happened to me....
I dropped off all my travelbugs (that were logged into the event) into one of the ammo cans on the front table. I didn't know I was supposed to list them on the discovery list. By the time I figured that part out, some of them were circulating around the room ( I couldn't find them). So they didn't get onto the list.
Yeah...sorry about that, VK. I didn't know about the discovery list. I'd never seen those before...didn't even know what "discovering" a TB was! Well, I'm always learning SOMETHING new. That does explain, however, where the TBs went. I believe the visitor from Connecticut ended up with a fistful of TBs, so they'll get some miles on them at any rate.
There were some other things that were dropped in the cache containers that may have been better served as individual prizes. I suppose, as organizer, I should have spent less time visiting and more time organizing the swag/prizes up front. A good thing to know...for next time.

My local geocaching group has silently gone the way of the dodo. Next spring, I'd like to do an event to bring all the cachers in my area together. I've got a few ideas but was wondering if anyone out there who has organized an event, could you give me some pointers? Mainly, how to get local (or non-local) businesses to help out with prizes? Gift cards, physical items, etc.
Anything else?

Heya, Shuckymomo. If you're refering to Poison Oak Cachers, we're alive and kicking. We enjoyed a gathering in October, and another last month in Orcutt. (There were some 80 people at the January pizza event on a dark and stormy knight...OK, the storm let up, but it was dark!)
There was a website, but the guy who maintained it had some illnesses in the family and I suspect they have taken priority over caching. Go figure. Meanwhile, we've attempted using the GC.com forum to communicate, but I find it doesn't always notify me when something's posted to that thread. Unless I check on it, I miss out.
We've reserved a web address (www.poisonoakcachers.com) and will have the site up relatively soon. (Let's say spring...all I have to do is create the site in my spare time).
OreoPony is organizing another POC event up your way March 1. Check your local listings...
Anyhoooo....though you missed it, the event was, I'd say, a success. I reserved a corner of the local pizza joint and asked everyone attending to bring something we could give away, either in a cache or AS a cache. The result of that simple request was LOADS of swag, cache containers from magnetic micros to regular ammo cans (5 of those, I think), too many travelbugs to count, geocoins (many not yet activated). But the best part was, indeed, meeting all these folks including VenturaKids who popped in for the weekend to clear out our area. Three local cachers also placed 11 caches, the information about which was released at the event. WAAAY more activity that I planned on (I figured we'd eat pizza, drink beer and tell tall tales), but it worked fantastically.

I figure a good month would be May. A good day might be Saturday the 3, 17, 31 or Sunday the 4, 18. The other weekends are Mother's day or Memorial day and are to be avoided if possible.
May is a GREAT time to meet in Atascadero! My dad's getting married on May 3, so that's out for me, but we'll be up that way anyhow, so May 4 would work for us! So would the 31, and perhaps 17. (We'll probably be headed up to the Sierra the 18th for the week.)
Is there some way I can help?

I don't think all the listed TBs went thropugh at the event. But, you may say to yourself, "Aaww...What does a dawg know anyway"
Yeah, I noticed a lot of the TBs on the printed list cycled through somehow without being added to the printed "discovery" list. Didn't know if that was because they actually didn't make it to the event, or they just didn't make it to the list...
It's alright...we'll find them on the hunt!

So much for the weatherman. Today started out with blue skies and high atmospheric clouds, which looked very non-threatening. Did you guys go to Huasna? I also want to say, even though I got to the pizza party late, I thoroughly enjoyed my hour of conversation and pizza. If what they tell me is true, the event was a HUGE success. Thanks BooBooBee for setting it up. It was great to see everyone again! I'm looking forward to a geo-hike soon. If you didn't do Huasna today, how about scheduling it for 2/9th???
We DID get out to Huasna, and WHAT A SPECTACULAR DAY! It really couldn't have been better. Not too hot, not too cold, just a slight breeze now and again 'til we returned to blustery civilization. The rain had cleared the air so the views were infinite! We kind of wished we'd headed to Miranda Pine once we laid eyes on it...the road was COVERED in snow all along the ridge. Still, I wouldn't have traded the day.
If you get a chance to hit Operation Skywatch, I'd certainly go for it again. Lots of bushwhacking for What in the World, but we found a better (less-bushwhacking) route back.
Thanks to all who came to pizza last night! WHAT AN INCREDIBLE TURNOUT! I'm glad we stuck around to chat afterward because a coupla cachers did come in after fulfilling their professional obligations. (I guess SOMEONE around here should be responsible...and I'm not exactly volunteering for THAT role!) I think what REALLY made it was the great turnout, everyone generously sharing for the raffle, and warm food on a cold night, oh, and did I mention the friendly people?

ATMOSPHERIC CONDITION:
A cold upper-level trough passed our area at 14:30 (2:30 pm) this
afternoon giving gusty southerly winds and periods of moderate rain.
Rain showers and a chance of thunderstorms will develop later this
the evening and will continue through tonight.
The evolving weather pattern is very similar to that of the 1991
"March Miracle". A low pressure system moving southward out of
the Gulf of Alaska is expected to stall west of Diablo Canyon where
it will entrain moisture from the tropics and intensify to 996 mb
(29.41 in/Hg).
This weather system will maintain a continuous southerly flow over
the region at mid and upper levels of the atmosphere and tap into
subtropical moisture on Friday, bringing the potential for very
heavy rain beginning Friday afternoon through Sunday morning,
especially along our coastal areas.
Snow levels will rise significantly on Friday through Saturday to
7000 feet, but will drop but down to 2,000 feet on Sunday. Heavy
snow totals are expected in the Sierra.
This entire event will produce fresh gale to strong gale (39-54 mph)
southerly winds and heavy rain. At this time, another 3 to 5 inches
of rainfall is expected with this system (Friday through Sunday).
Note: The heaviest rainfall should occur on Saturday afternoon
through early Sunday morning.
A break in the weather is forecast on Monday through Tuesday, then
another cold front will give rain on Wednesday.

I will try to check and see if the gate is open tomorrow before the Pizza Party. If it is we're game, but we think that we would need to hitch a ride in BooBooBee's Jeep as I feel that some of those creek crossings will probably be at least 2 ft. deep and a minimum of 10 ft wide. Whatcha' say BooBooBee? What about Riley, can she come...Labs loooooooove water!
The Jeep seats four, so we'll have to see who's coming. If I bring the kids and husband, well, that just about does it for passengers, unless you go with the aforementioned "hangers-on" method!
I'll know by pizza whether DH and children want to go along. (They're fair-weather cachers.)
