customizing profiles
Pirates of Prescott replied to Pirates of Prescott's topic in GPS technology and devices
Thanks for all the useful tips. -
I purchased an Oregon 450 and was wondering how some of you set up your Profiles. For example I read you should create a profile for sunny conditions as well as for a shaded environment.

Sending maps to sd card.

I'd try renaming the one that is already in your Oregon's Garmin folder from gmapsupp.img to something that you can remember easily so you can keep them straight. I keep several maps on my 450 and enable them as needed. Each has a different *.img name that indicates the area that it covers. When you fire another one over to your 450, the rename of your first map will prevent the new gmapsupp.img file from overwriting it. Thank You for your help. I did what you said and now I got my maps. -
Sending maps to sd card.

Thank You for the help. The map is installed. Now how do I add another map without over writing the previous installed map? -
I use mapsource to send maps downloaded from gpsfiledepot.com. I want to install it to an 8GB micro sdhc card installed into my oregon 450. It does get installed as a zipped file that the Oregon 450 doesn't recognize. I sure could use some advice as to what I might be doing wrong and what I need to do to get this right.

Pirates of Prescott replied to Pickering Family's topic in GPS technology and devices
I have both the Oregon 400T and the GPSMAP60CSx. The Oregon is the better unit for Geocaching if that is what you would be using it for the 60CSx cant compare. But the 62 series? . . . -
Is it possible to load caches into a Garmin Phone as POI's?

help figuring out which GPS to get:
Pirates of Prescott replied to eaglesbecomevultures's topic in GPS technology and devices
How about an iphone? -
I have the Oregon 400t that we use for Geocaching. I would like to get another paperless GPSr so both my wife and I have one to use. I am used to the Oregons and made my decision to stay with this model. My question is. . . Is the 550 worth the extra $$$. The reviews have been very good. But are you happy or not with your purchase and why?

Help deciding on a GPS

How about the Garmin Colorado? To me it seems to be the best value out there. -

Buying first "real GPS"
Pirates of Prescott replied to smitty19983's topic in GPS technology and devices
Go with a paperless model for geocaching. I have an Oregon and I like it. It's easy to use. If I had a reason to buy another I wouldn't get a touch screen unit. There not as clear a screen. I just don't feel right about pressing down on the screen. Check out the Garmin 62 series. There coming out soon if not now. -
Maps 60CSX--opinions
Pirates of Prescott replied to ZimmermanClan's topic in GPS technology and devices
I have one and was questioning why I bought it. I love my wifes Oregon 400t because of the paperless caching. The other day I fell while caching and dropped my 60cxs. It tumbled down A steep rocky bank about 100ft. We retrieved it. It still had a lock on the cache and was perfectly fine. I dont think the Oregon would of survived that tumble. I paid $280.00 for my 60cxs which at the time was a good deal. -

downloading pocket queries to Garmin 6ocsx
Pirates of Prescott replied to zamoch's topic in GPS technology and devices
You are aware that the 60csx doesn't support paperless caching? I couldn't download caches into my 60csx either then someone told me not to have it set to mass storage. That fixed my problem. -
I found a software program called GeoBuddy. I was wondering if it is liked by those who have tried it.

First Day; is my new GPS the right kind?
Pirates of Prescott replied to SunTrekker's topic in GPS technology and devices
I have the same unit. I use Gsak to download caches into it. The 265T then gives me driving directions close to the cache. I then use a handheld unit which has the same caches installed into it. If you can afford it. I suggest looking at the Garmin paperless models. -
Can you choose to download maps directly to the oregons internal memory or choose to download it just to the micro sd card? I ask because when I hook up my oregon to the computer and open "BaseCamp" it shows all my maps installed on the oregon itself. Drive K: my micro sd card is empty. Thanks for any input, Pirates of Prescott

You seem to be doing fine with what you have. 2000 caches in less than 2 years? I am impressed and jelous. I have both units. My wife uses the Oregon 400t. It is the favorite. The only time the 60csx was needed was when we had high banks on both sides. The 60csx does keep a better satalite lock. The Oregon wins for all the paperless caches it holds.
