  1. On my Mystery Multi: Fox Den Mystery Multi I made the cachers find 6 of my other caches. Each of the six caches had a letter that equaled a number. For further clarification Take a look at the cache page to see what i'm talking about. Another option is with random numbers. By making them add, subtract, divide or multiply numbers that they initially find, they get the number that you want them to find. For example the number they find is 150 but you need them to have the number 500. Have them multply 150 by 3 and add 50. This gives you 500.
  2. I think he has the filter set on his PQs to prevent his own caches from being listed. Bill,
  3. What I use is the "Search for nearest caches function on the "My account" page of the geocaching website. It should be noted I use my home coordinates for the search, and I click on the "filter finds" button. This way the results don't show my caches or the caches that I have already found. I like to use this feature every evening and at 0530 hours in the morning before I go to work. Bill,
  4. Whoever scolded you is an ungrateful geocacher who has lost sight of this sport. I'm on a tight budget also, and can't afford to put Garmin E-trexes in my caches for FTF. Every cache I have ever visited had nothing but inexpensive toys for kids (along with cheap hotel soap, and other wierd items). All I want to do is a sign the log and be on my way. My Daughter likes the kids toys and we trade fairly. My regular sized caches are filled with toys (Stickers, plastic animals, marbles). I only filled one of my caches with better trade items (Patriotic Coffee cups, Playing cards, etc). This is because the cache requires you to find 6 of my other caches and solve a field puzzle. To date, no one has taken any of the nicer items. It's your cache, put it together however you want to. if someone doesn't like the your items, tell them to spend their own money and fill caches with trade items that they want to find. Bill,
  5. If you want to download hundreds of sets of waypoints at a time, download Geocaching Swiss Army Knife. I started out manually, now I download 50 to 100 cache waypoints in about ten seconds. I also use a Meridian Gold. Bill,
  6. I like to use the "Should Be Archived" feature when I find an inappropriate cache (location, safety factors etc) . I think the problem with bees at cache locations is not discovered until cachers starting stomping around bushes disturbing areas near the actual cache. The cache placer never noticed the bees when he went directly to the spot where he wanted to place his cache. I dislike caches in the "Ghetto", caches in residential areas (next to houses) nor do I like caches hidden in trash dumps, unless the requirement is to pick up trash to get credit for finding the cache: Fight the Dumping Dummies Bill,
  7. I found four within a ten mile radius of my house. Two used fishing line to suspend the cache in a conduit tube. One was a two-step multi where you retrieve a ten foot length of masonry line that has a metal nut tied to one end. You drop the nut into a piece of ABS pipe and it "attaches" itself to a match holder that has a magnet glued to the top. When your done, you drop the match holder back in the tube, and replace the string/nut in it's hiding place. I also found one where you have to "fish" the cache out of a piece of conduit using a length of rope with the "hook" on the end. This is my personal favorite use of rope: Hold the Line Bill,
  8. I have one DNF. On the 4th trip to the location (with the cache owner) we discovered that it was buried. I don't feel bad about missing it the first 3 times. I cache blind (no sheets, downloaded PQ caches) and have on two occasions been unable to find a cache. When logging my cache finds online, I discovered that the caches (I could not find) were recently archived. I didn't bother posting a DNF on them.
  9. When I created my first Mystery Multi, I used the same idea that Team PerkyPerks did. I created six different micro caches, throughout the community in which I live. On the log of each micro is a letter that equals a number. You plug in the numbers on the cache page of my Msytery multi to find the true starting point. Take a look at my cache page to see how I made it work. Fox Den Mystery Multi My reasoning behind the great effort was to make people "work" to find the Mystery Multi. I invested a almost $40.00 in the container and the trade items, and did not want it too easy to find. I don't get as many logs as other caches, but the condition of the cache and the trade items is still very nice. Bill,
  10. On ebay, they are selling untreated "chunks" of bark or logs with the bark still on them. I doubt your walking sticks are that much of a threat, but you should research the their legality. The burden is on you to know the laws if the Govt. ever wanted to prosecute you. His description is equally amuzing. Here is the description" Ultimate Bark Cache!!!! This is a great cache!!! A fellow cacher will go "WEEEEE", after they discover it's hiding spot. This is the cache that will give another cacher a headache and you a smile on your face. The cache container: -bark pieces vary but all are around 10" long and 2" thick -micro container held tightly on bottom of cache for a log and trade items -micro container: 3/4" wide and 1" deep (log and trade items in picture not included) This cache is easy to hide, and it took me less than a minute to place in the picture shown. A good hint might be the only way someone has a chance to find this one. You will giggle with delight after you get emails telling you how they walked right past it the first time!!! Pick up some trash, the next time you cache!!! geocachegeorge
  11. Although off topic, your worthless opinion was noted. I was referring to myself, not the political party. Most of you have misunderstood my point, I brought the topic up for conversational purposes only. If I was deeply concerned, I would have contacted the seller and the Us Dept of Ag. Here is what I was referring to AuntiWeasel. since you made it personal: http://www.enn.com/news/2004-08-25/s_26486.asp Oak Disease Spreads Via Human Hikers Human hikers and mountain bikers are spreading a disease threatening California forests. The fungus that causes sudden oak death, Phytophthora ramorum, has killed thousands of oak trees around the state and afflicted other native plants such as rhododendrons and bay laurel with a leaf disease. Previous work had found that the pathogen can be carried by hiking boots. Now J. Hall Cushman of Sonoma State University, California, has confirmed that forest lovers are helping to speed the trees' demise. Cushman took soil samples from forests seemingly clear of the disease and tested them for the fungus. He found the pathogen frequently along trails, but not from samples taken just a few feet off trails. Parks with the most foot, horse, and bike traffic were more likely to have the disease than quieter parks. The findings, which could trigger trail closures in some parks, were reported at a meeting of the Ecological Society of America in Portland, Oregon. Another example of a diseases spread my outdoor activites is whirling disease. This affects fish and is spread by fisherman who wade into the water. In my opinion, common sense precautions should be taken when engaging in outdoor activites. this includes treading lightly, not putting caches in sensitive areas, etc.
  12. Am I the only one that has an issue with some geocachers on Ebay who sell caches made of bark and or hollowed out logs. Aren't there restrictions about moving any plant, or wood product out of state without getting it cleared with the Dept of Agriculture. My concern is regarding the export of "problem species" like bugs, fungus, etc across state lines. Here in California we have lost thousands of Oak trees because of hikers tracking the harmful fungus or protozoa on their hiking shoes. This sport is supposed to have a positive environmental image. My issue is with people breaking the law for profit. What are your thoughts on the issue. Please keep it on topic. Before you go and label me a tree hugger and enviromental whacko, let it be known that I have voted Republican in every election for the last 11 years. I also am a member of the NRA. I do believe in common sense measures regarding the environment Thanks Bill,
  13. Just today while caching, I came upon dog biscuits in a cache. I assume it's because several people cache with their dogs. Bill,
  14. I have done one Mystery multi that required you to convert Morse code to Navajo code. Then you convert the Navajo code to Spanish. Finally you convert the Spanish to English. My personal Mystery Multi http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...87-22fd8e22c834 requires you to find six of my other caches to get the starting point coordinates. You go to a certain point, sit down and work on a "field puzzle" to to find the final coords. To find the final coords, you have to solve the "pigpen cipher" http://www.simonsingh.net/The_Black_Chambe...enWithMenu.html. I left the key so it wouldn't be too hard. Bill,
  15. My recommendation would be for the Magellan Meridian Platinum. It comes with ever bell and whistle that you want and you can buy it here: http://www.shopharmony.com/product.asp?i=MAGMRD59803 for $258.00. This is the company where I bought my Meridian Gold for 169.00 shipped to my door in two days. Had I not been on a tight budget, I would have bought the Platinum. I have had nothing but excellent results with my Meri-gold. I downloaded over 100 waypoints using GSAK in about 15 seconds. My unit works great in the field also. Bill,
  16. Excellent idea! Was this a regular ammo box, or something slightly different? I prefer to place full size caches whenever possible. Every ammo can I have seen has had a roughed up seal inside and I question their abilty to remain watertight. Bill,
  17. Hello, I would like to know if capsules like the "Bison" are truly waterproof. I want to create a cache that requires the container to be fully submerged and need advice on which containers actually work best. I'm specifically looking for something in the 35mm film role or smaller size range. Thanks for your help in advance. Bill,
  18. I might get shot if I reveal the secrets, so i'll just link to the cache page where you can read everyones log entries. Mark this waypoint, Val One of my personal favorites, see the picture gallery. Hold the Line Promises in the dark Best urban camo! The fun zone It doesn't get any greener than this one. The Nano returns My personal favorite style for hiding a cache: The invisible touch The use of decoys and mis-direction makes caching that much more fun. The use of an old fire extinguisher to hide a micro inside was neat. Here is a cool containers thread
  19. This photo was taken after the bi-annual car wash . I use the green one when 4x4 is required.
  20. This is a log from my friend who introduced me to geocaching. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...&log=y&decrypt=
  21. The photo in the cache album gives it away also. http://img.Groundspeak.com/cache/log/222ce...2ea0f44473a.jpg
  22. Try decoding the morse code in this cache. Then figure it out from there. It took me 2 1/2 hours to solve it, and I got a bad headache. Tejon Mystery Multi Yes, you can find a quick online morse code reader to decode the CW, but from there, you need to do it by hand. Bill,
  23. A quick update. I downloaded GSAK and instead of adding cache coordinates (by hand) at a rate of 1 per 30 seconds, I downloaded about 70 from a PQ in 15 seconds. I love this program, but I still need to learn all the bells and whistles that it has. Bill,
  24. I wouldn't trade in my Meridian gold unless.... a Platinum was given to me. I bought mine with a carrying case for 204.00. www.shopharmony.com All I need now is the Directroute software, and I have a simple autorouting navigation system. Bill,
  25. While searching for a well hidden micro the other day, the hair on the back of my neck starting rising and I noticed two people about 200 feet away staring at me. I did the right thing and (after signing the log and rehiding the cache) walked up to them and explained what I was doing. They thought I was looking for a "dope stash" . I have a "high and tight" hair cut and I'm the last person on earth thatwould be looking for a "dope stash." After explaining what I was doing, they looked relieved and somewhat interested in the sport. I did not show them the cache though. They would never find it anyway.
