  1. I don't use the compass. Well...on this new unit, Garmin 62S, it remains on...and it confuses me. I'm spinning around, and it is spinning around....I'm not sure who is chasing who ! I keep 4 data fields on the compass page. Accuracy Distance to go Battery Name of cache I like seeing the accuracy. It helps me understand how well the gps is doing. If the accuracy is 75 feet, then the ZERO on the distance to go doesn't mean much. However, if the accuracy is 8 feet, then I can look right near zero. I use the accuracy as a radius for my search circle.
  2. OK, so sarcasm doesn't go over too well in the forums. I would first check to see what has already been logged. If no one has logged a note, then I would probably log a DNF or a note. If someone has already brought the situation up in their logs, then I'd probably log nothing. I prefer to keep the logs short and simple (for those who use them). Either way,... I would email the owner (using the cache page link at the top) and let them know what I found.
  3. I use a program called GSAK. You can move stuff around and filter out the junk you don't want. Then it will download to your gps with all the pages, hints and logs.
  4. Perhaps the last cache logsheet was returned to the first cache site
  5. ....and many cachers don't log their travel bugs out in a timely manner. So...they may get logged into another cache...hopefully.
  6. ...and....it must be time for the always included.... "MOST geocachers like to do those Powertrails". That's why there are only 1 or 2 finds on the lone hiking hides. Perhaps I'm getting off topic (that was my point).... The article is well written, and quite succinctly gets the point across. The point is that geocachers bring money into an area when they visit. When we pass thru a tiny rarely travelled town, we make an attempt to buy something....even if we don't need anything. We believe this helps to keep the small shops in business....for the next visitors.
  7. I think you will still have the frustrated husband. Perhaps you should re-think the entire process I use a Nuvi, and had the alert turned on. It would Ding a Bell whenever we got within point one .1 from a cache. All that caused was some strange swerving by the driver ( I can see tons of frustration here). Also...on the Nuvi, you cannot see a nearby geocache until you are within about point two .2 miles from it. We use a Garmin 62, and just hit the next closest cache. You can then zoom in or out to see where to go. We also use the Nuvi. (750 series)- but it doesn't have pedestrian mode (so don't get that one)
  8. The other 6300 or so signature were from aliens who signed the log in an alternate dimension. But the journalist was able to make contact for this article. Someone PM me when this thread is ready for the pic of the snowplow train wreck. MOST geocachers do not log ON-line.
  9. Once when we were Night geocaching in San Jose California....in a bad area.... We were stopped by an officer (who stayed inside his car). He asked us what we were doing in this area at night. We explained that our friends hid something here for us to find. The officer said "If your friends hid something around here for you to come and find....You need new friends!" Then he drove away.
  10. In California.....we get stopped daily. Twice we were held at gunpoint until the Law Enforcement Officer was confident that we were "good" people. Our respectful answers to all questions normally result in a " have a nice day". Once, the Officer wanted us to continue searching until we found the geocache,....so he could see what everyone was looking for. Perhaps the placement was questionable. We tend to avoid questionable areas (or we ask the security guards to help us search).
  11. I've had over 824 field notes (finds and not founds) in one day. The only problem I had was with the geocaching.com site. It kept dropping out random finds...but then I figured out that you can only log a found in one minute. Every cache that I found in the same minute as another, were dropped off of the field note upload. I know 3 other cachers that had the same issue. Calendar? We have a calendar?
  12. 2. E-mail some previous finders for hints ! I was surprised no one suggested this often used method of getting hints. Many geocachers go in groups after events, and even save each others phone numbers (life-lines) for future help.
  13. ...or go with the 62S and buy some street maps. How do ya get more than 2000 geocaches into the unit?
  14. So many choices..... Low end units.... Garmin Legend. moving up the list...you will add maps with all the points of interest High end units....Garmin 62S + street maps includes turn by turn directions (tones), and is supported with paperless geocaching (you can see the cache pages) It sounds like you are leaning towards a phone with geocaching apps. That works too! The good news is...they all work just fine for geocaching. If you get one that is not "all that", you can easily sell it and buy a better one.
  15. Wait a minute.....I've gotta put the rubber band back on my Garmin Legend, and take the batteries out of the Garmin 60CS to get it to work again.... I am much too busy finding caches to worry about a squeak. I only press that button once in the early morning, and once after I get home....usually way after dark. It is possible that it squeaks....but so does the car.
  16. http://coord.info/GCRFNN This was the puzzle cache. It's been there for years....but that certainly doesn't make it a good choice for placement.
  17. I'd log a find and then everyone will tell you what to do. I'd take a cache out of the backpack and replace the cache, log a find, and don't say anything about the "defender". After all....he's in it for the attention.
  18. I use GSAK. It's like a super powered spreadsheet. You just load the zipped queries right into it. You can filter your list, and then just download right into the 62. (it's listed)
  19. however........I just uploaded over 800 field notes. It seems that whenever I found 2 caches within the same ONE minute..... the field note is missing. I'm quite certain I logged the found field note. It looks quite strange.....every third or fourth field note is missing. Bummer. Now I have to go back on the geocaching map and see what caches it left out. Probably a software issue with the 62.
  20. I believe it's much simpler than all this. I'd say something like this........ Feel free to log your attempt to find the cache. The website is for Your benefit. Use it to help you separate those caches you already found, from those you haven't. Any sort of log is fine......from the simple TFTC, to the magnificent 2 pagers with pictures attached.
  21. I hope they get to fix up the power trail for those who already have spent money to reserve their visit to the area. Luckily there is a small town nearby that should provide some entertainment if needed (Las Vegas). We already completed our visit there. Although we did have a dozen cars pass by us along the highway, that wasn't the scary part. Being from the city....the big city....we don't interact with animals much....at least not with animals that are not restrained in some way. Around midnight we were reaching for a geocache in a bush, when we heard a noise in the bushes. We raised our flashlight and came face to face with a very large black Horned animal. He seemed to be as surprised as we were. We all ran back to the car, screaming and waving our arms. Luckily the animal was laughing too hard to pursue us.
  22. The Garmin 62 has the ability to store the cache page description, the hints, the last 5 or so logs, and also can capture field notes(found, dnf). Screen shots?....hmmm.... similar to the Oregon and Colorado.
