  1. You can also ask at a store in the mall... I work for a clothing store, & we get our jewelry in that type of baggy. We try to save them to use for other things, but we get so many, we just throw 'em out! (Side note: there's a little elderly lady who comes in on a regular basis & asks for these baggies... I didn't think anything of it until one of the girls on our staff asked what she was 'stashing' in these baggies. The only reason it caught me off guard was because a few years ago, she gave us brownies & said "Don't worry! They're clean!" Threw those bad boys in the trash!!!!)
  2. I like saying "REI I"! makes me giggle! I wish they were pre-selling them so I could just order & not worry about it!
  3. Could you place a couple of unactivated diabetes bugs in the cache for FTF prizes in her honor?
  4. ^^ survey worked fine for me! Clicked twice... once for husband, once for me! (28 & 31- checkin' in!!)
  5. I do that! I wear my flips geocaching, golfing & anything else I can get away with!! I've started taking along my shoes... but, yeah! LOVE my flips!!! My husband goes with me, but thats more because I have a tendancy to get hurt doing nothing, so you can imagine how dangerous I am in nature!! A few weeks ago, we had to step over a barbed wire fence that was maybe a foot off the ground. I told him I wouldn't make it! Sure enough, stupid fence took me out!! So yeah... he'd be a muggle if he could, but for my own safety, he can't be!
  6. I found a camelbak style bag at target for $30. Its stocked with... > multiple pens. Im a pen junky... its just how I roll! > collapsable walking stick. Got it really cheap & i've used it for moving large branches & bushes more than anything else! > an extendable camera mount. Its for those "im taking my own pic, I hope my arm is long enough" moments. > camera > bug spray > sunscreen (if my hair wasn't blonde, I'd be a ginger!!) > my geomate junior > batteries > random swag > Ned Flanders (We found a cache that was our 2nd attempt... someone had just dropped off a little Ned Flanders figurine, so we swapped since the husband is a HUGE simpson fan! We later discovered a button on his back & he says "Always room for one more flanders!" So, he's our new mascot!) >h2o
  7. Not nearly as scenic, but, what can ya do when ya live in rural iowa!!
  8. I think I'm gonna talk to the mall manager first. If he won't even allow a cache, no point in worrying about this end of it! edit: apparently i'm putting too much thought into this! I talked to security last night & he told me that there was one but it'd been archived a long time ago!
  9. The main screen is a circle, a compass if you will, with a distance in the center, & an arrow that rotates around the outside showing you which direction the cache is from you at that point. So, if its pointing left, you'd better turn left! If it says 900 feet to the left, you'd better figure out if there's a lake between you & the cache on your own. (This happened to me this past weekend. I followed the arrows right down to the dock of the lake! Then, I turned around, followed the path all the way around the lake!) There's a screen that tells the coords where you are at that particular moment. Another example of using this... there's a playground cache about 3 houses away from my grandma's house. So, I made a note of the coords on the website, & then hoofed it up to the park & wandered til my coords matched up. Still haven't found that stinkin' cache, but that's not the point!!! This cache doesn't show up in junior since it was a very recent hide. There's another one in the park right behind my backyard, which is a 4 for difficulty, so it also doesn't show up, but, I've been waiting for the update kit to try that one! I can see how for most of the geocachers on this site, the junior is backwards, lacking or pointless... but, since this is my first gps unit of any kind (well, excluding the car gps), I've found its done quite well for me! I just found my 40th cache, which isn't too shabby considering I get to go about once during the week & on the weekends, its been mostly with my 80-year-old grandma!! I have been considering a "grown up" gps (My friend just bought an oregon 300 or something). My problem is that I've gotten so used to turn it on & see what's closest, I can't imagine having to upload caches before I can go! I like turning it on wherever I am & just seeing what I can find!
  10. To clarify... when I mentioned the landscaping, I mean, huge bushes surrounding a large brick wall/sign. This means I could potentially not hide a micro!!
  11. I've been trying to figure that 'perfect place' to place my cache... and I think i've figured it out! I work at a large mall in my town, which has a lot of really nice landscaping (think huge sign on the corner of a major intersection). The area I'm considering has a frontage road seperating it from the main parking of the mall. Obviously I'm going to need the mall manager's permission for this one (I'm already friends with the security guys, so I know they'll help me out!) So, my question is... when I approach the mall manager, can I entice him to my side by offering to put in mall coupon books as FTF prizes? Or, will this cross the line into 'commercial cache'? (Every year, the mall merchants donate coupons, which the mall binds into a book & gives to tour groups that stop by, etc.) Thanks in advance for your opinions!
  12. if im understanding correctly, the answer would be no. I think you'll need to buy the update kit and the junior at the same time, since you're not in the us. Email warren!
  13. bumping so that warren will see this & hopefully give us a specific date to mark on the calendar?!
  14. I was wondering why it said I had only 20 finds! Interesting... Oh well! Im so impatiently waiting for this update kit!!! I can't take the suspense any more!!!
  15. Nope. You can get to the coords where you are... We were trying to find a cache that had said it was moved 120 ft, & here's the coords, so, we didn't know if the junior was taking us to the new or the old location. So, we changed it to the coords screen & just watched as the numbers got closer! Warren- Where will the update kits be available from? Same places as the junior? Will you start a count down of days for us soon???
  16. I agree. I think it would make people question it more. "What is that thing hanging on your belt loop?" "Oh, just a geocache. Yeah, that's it... a geocache. Like that geeky thing my parents do. I'm just trying it out for them." maybe I'll do that! hang it from my belt loops, get myself a TB code & let me people discover me!
  17. The one I found was mounted to the tree securely, but the lid lifted off & then it had a tupperware inside. the front had a hole that could be for birds, but it was covered over with mesh
  18. What's that you say??? My pom-poms are in the mail!?!?
  19. My husband is a photographer... and we're wondering if anyone else out there is too? Now, I realize a lot of people consider themselves amateur photogs... or, enjoy taking pics... But, I'm talking professional, earn-money, make-a-living type of photography. Sometimes its hard to convince him to go geocaching with me, so, my best method is usually "think of all the pics you can get in this area"!! So yeah? Anyone else out there?? Can ya share a pic?? I'll get the ball rolling... this one was taken while we were working on a series called "Snow white & the seven dwarves"
  20. We were just in spencer on the 5th!! Its about 3-4 hours from us, so we don't make it too often. There's a book about him? *heads to a search engine....*
  21. I haven't placed a cache before... so, I apologize if I am asking "duh" type stuff... My boss has a pre-teen girl, & she was concerned about her discretely carrying her "sanitary products", so I offered to google & help find such a device. This is what I came upon! Would it make a decent cache? The product description: It's Waterproof! Take your Sports RAGTOTES® Tampon Case with you when you go sailing, swimming, canoeing, white-water rafting, kayaking, backpacking, biking You get the picture.. 22. It does tell the ID, the terrain & diff. It also shows the size of the cache. As for showing the extra few caches on the screen, if you hit the big button 21 times, you're right back where ya started. (20 caches, plus home). or, just hold it, & it'll start the cycle over again!
  23. We found one with a cute little door like that & then about a week later, someone stole the door! Bummer! I took a friend's kids to show them, & we discovered the door was gone! http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...58-0db516e1d633
  24. I don't usually have issues with the cloud/tree cover. There are times when I can get a signal in the house, & then other times it takes 5 minutes in open, cloudless sky. As for the update kit, the way I've been understanding it, you'll be able to do more picking & choosing, but I could be wrong. I'll let Warren have that one! The closest 20 is exactly that. When you turn it on, it gives you the closest, no matter where they are. (We live in Iowa, so, as we were driving on a rural highway, I kept looking at it... There was some that were 20 miles away. But, in town, I usually have 4 or 5 within a .5 mile radius. I have found that once you get a signal/connection, you can turn it off & then on & that signal comes back immediately. We have a lot of bike trails & nature trails, so, when we walk those, sometimes I reset it as soon as we make a find. When I plan ahead (not too often). I load up my palm & take that with me... and I've mastered the texting thing (that link I posted a few posts back), which will send you a basic desc. or hint, which helps with the lack of website access.
