  1. I'm thinking of making a cache at a radio tower on the mountain overlooking the city. You could hike there, but it would be a tough steep climb, or you could drive there using any of three routes, only one of which is possible for cars and none of which are direct lines. The question I have is whether I should post a detailed map showing exactly how to drive there (and practically negating the need for a GPS) or simply put the coordinates, the altitude, and the altitude of the city and let people try to work out how to get there for themselves?
  2. Nice. Come over to Vernon and drop one in my cache. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...12-dc0dbc205117
  3. I thought my new cache bordered on sadistic due to the camouflage I used, but it's got three for three finds in two days, so I guess the next one will have to be even more creative.
  4. Wow. It already has one find.
  5. For those of you that are in a twist about offensive items, do you realize that those beautiful pins made by Midway Cafe contain the maltese cross, which was used by the German air force in WW1? So they can offend relegious people, vets, jews, and Europeans all in one shot. So you would throw it away?? Or you can just realize that it wasn't meant to be anything other than a piece of art and either take it for yourself or leave it there and ignore it. Finding a cross won't change someone's upbringing. A card that says "Jesus saves" won't make your kid do drugs. A budda figurien won't make your teenager decide to shave his head and wear his bath robe to school (unless he aready does ). Anything illegal/immoral for minors should not be in a cache. Outright advertisements should not be in a cache (be it for a business or a religeon). Beyond that by censoring the tokens other people have left behind you are censoring their right to express the way they feel or believe and that is not right. OK, I'll step off the soap box now. I would love to find personal signature items in my cache. I would collect and scrap-book them.
  6. Use it as the first of a multi and have the log book at the second??
  7. FTF (first to find) are made by or for each person. Thye are often generic items as well. In the short time I've been here I've seen everything from badges to coins to a set of golf clubs. I've got 3 finds and 1 hidden, but my sister has been caching for years so I have had the learning experience of watching what she does.
  8. I found it was way easier to open the Mapsource program I got with my GPS, create a new waypoint, and cut and paste the coordinates off the web site into the way point location.
  9. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...12-dc0dbc205117 Can't wait to see logs on it!!
  10. Your instructions are pretty clear, but I would change the last sentence to say that the picture with the arch and the GPS must be taken from the cache location. I'm a newbie here, but I would delete the log. Not to deny the people their fun, but to avoid confusion and more of the same type of log. You could also invite people who visit the info stop but can't do the hike to post a NOTE saying they stopped by.
  11. Avoid the grain silo unless it has been a long long time since it has been used. Grain dust is highly flamable.
  12. It is slightly more subtle than the original variety. I have used it for tent repairs, broken tail lights, soft top windows, and hamsters (kidding).
  13. I like that! Now what you need is to make the combination match the co-ordinates.
  14. There are two Jeep sponsored event days that happen all over the world. One is Jeep Jamboree, which is a all about getting your rig onto the trails. There is driving instruction (Jeep 101), assorted trails, BBQ dinners, and wall to wall Jeep nuts. The other is Camp Jeep. This is more a "Jeep Lifestyle" event where there are trails, canoeing, hiking, kids games, etc. Less focus on the vehicles and more focus on all types of outdoor family fun. More info on Jeep.com Nice Renegade, but unbolt the tube side steps if you are going off road. They hang up on stuff too easy. My Libby:
  15. As a newbie placing his first cache I was wondering how many people will go out of their way for a FTF treasure? Is it the treasure or just the FTF that appeals to you? I'm thinking of using a TY beannie baby Zodiac Dragon. Opinions?
  16. Exactly! There is a couple locally that sometimes cache independantly(separate accounts)of each other and log each others caches. They are both good cachers; log their DNF's, post humorous logs of their adventures, and are both quite adept at finding difficult caches hidden by other cachers. I don't see that it matters if they log each others caches anyway. I wonder if they watch the other hide the caches or not? It woudl make a lot of sense for one partner tpo hide a cache and then the other partner try to find it as a "test run"
  17. I'm not 100% sure if this was fair or not, so give me an opinion. My first and only real find (just started last week) is a cache that I saw being placed a year ago. Although I knew the exact location of the cache I did not simply walk to it, I followed the directions and used the GPS as if I had no idea where it was. I'll be placing my first cache this week. I figure it will be 4/2. I actually think it will be even more fun to hide creative caches than to find them. This is partly due to the fact that this is a big tourist area, but there are only a dozen or so caches within 50 miles.
  18. Our pumice is more of a motteled grey color, so it wil blend in nearly anywhere.
  19. Because they are sensible about it and just get a hotel room. I know quite a few gay and bi men and women. 85% of the women are perfectly normal. Only about 45% of the guys are well adjusted and normal. And now for a totally tasteless joke: 25% of gay men are born that way. The rest are sucked into it.
  20. I just had another fun idea. Have you seen natural Pumice Stone (frothy volcanic glass)? The high grade fine pumice is used for cosmetics. The "junk" stones are about 80% air bubbles and are often used for landscaping. It is fairly soft so it would be easy to chissel out a space for a container, and it's light so you could make it out of a rock that 99% of people wouldn't even think they could lift. It could be in total plain site in a park or any other outdoor setting and be completely ignored by millions of people.
  21. On most GPS units you can change the format, enter the waypoint, and then switch your GPS back to your favorite format. The waypoint will stay in the same place but the display will show the current format. I frequently do this with cach locations because the 4x4 maps I use are in the Hddd.dddd format so that is what I am used to.
  22. Not an edit but a similar topic, I've had this image floating around my computer for a while. It could make a good avatar for a computer obsessed geocachette. No idea where it came from.
  23. Thanks for all the great ideas. I am also a newbie and I was wondering how I can hide a cache in a busy area and not have it muggled the next day. This thread also reminded me that we have small plastic olive barrels at work about the size of a big plastic pop bottle but with a big screw on lid. They are brown, have a handle, and are water-tight. They will make perfect caches. I'll just have to wash them really well. Even so I doubt bears will like the smell of olive brine.
