  1. Hi there

I was out caching and had to project a way point Soooo I marked my location and went to menu and went to the "project waypoint" page...

I put sayyyy 100°mag in the bearing slot and press enter... the digits changed to 119° mag which is odd because my Mag dev here is 19°

I checked the settings and it is set to Mag.

    Any Ideas?

    What device are you using?

  2. If you have WAAS on turn it off. I've found that if you are in an area where there is no way you can see a low horizon WAAS satellite then you are far better turning it off as it tends to cause the GPS to react slowly which causes issues with signal lock. Also if you are on a slow moving trail with a lot of twists and turns it can help to have the compass on so the unit always knows the orientation of the sky.

  3. Pretty cool device to send with your kid. It can notify a parent that the device has left a predefined area by sending an SMS message to their cell.

The problem with devices like this is it's by a company that has little to no background in GPS or gaming so it will probably do both okay but not great like one would want for real use. So in this case it will probably be great for a younger kid but probably not an adult.

  4. Hello, all. I am impressed with all the great information in this topic and am prepared to purchase a 60 now. I did see a question without reply earlier about spontaneous shutdowns that might sway my decision of C v. CS.

The reason I am concerned is that I currently am using my second Vista, a replacement for the original that shutdown several times a day despite good batteries, cord power, battery cover, battery contacts, multiple firmware upgrades, and 'politely' asking it to quit that sort of thing. Even the replacement unit has done this a couple of times. I have heard it theorized that the S models tax the processor more and thus display this behavior.

If the CS is also having this sort of problem, I will probably go with the C and a compass despite the slight loss of convenience and cool-factor. I would greatly appreciate hearing anyone's experience with non-desired shutdowns with either the C or CS model.

I have not had this issue since I got mine about 6 months ago. I put mine through a lot of very hard and abusive circumstances as well. Not intentionally just back packing and motorcycle riding for some reason it keeps getting tossed and hits the ground but it keeps working and with nearly no scratches.

  5. Well, yes it will lag. It only updates once per second, and it takes a little time to calculate and display the new speed. How much varies with the model. I notice that the displays on my Legend, and on Mapopolis which the Legend is feeding, don't agree exactly. They're using different algorithms to calculate the speed, and doing it at different times. The speedometer is probably better for instantaneous readings, especially during hard acceleration or deceleration, but the GPS is more accurate for steady speeds.

I've only noticed lag with the 60CS when I was in an area with poor reception.

  6. I have noticed that mine tends to lag behind the speedometer when speeding up or slowing down. When I am going a constant rate of speed it tends to be right on, but I have no way of verifying if right on is correct, it is just consistent with the speedometer.

You may have a battery saving mode of some sort turned on. If you do then it will sample less often thus your lag.

  7. Has anyone discovered a good windshield mount for the 60cs? I must change vehicles regularly and so I need a temporary mount. I have the bean bag and am not happy with that..........

I've experimented with several home made mounts, but I am most satisfied with Garmin's bean bag mount. Just my humble opinion.

After repeated "ratcheting" of the adjustable pivot nearest the GPSr the ability to lock was finally lost. This is probably a result of using it in a way that was not intended. Perhaps it is poorly designed.

I called Garmin and they said they would send me a replacement. Great customer service as always.

Regardless something more substantial was needed for the way I use the unit. I ordered the Ram mount and am very impressed with it. We will not get to use it much until this weekend but are pleased at this point. I hope the release gets easier or I get better at getting it out. Thanks to all who answered. This is such a great resource.

What do you mean by ratcheting and what pivot? All the pivots move freely with no ratcheting if you loosen enough prior to moving them.

  8. Just because the contacts are not covered well does not mean that they are not sealed water tight on the inside with epoxy. Most devices are even non-water proof electronics. The dust caps on the Garmin 60 are just there to protect the contacts not to water proof them I suspect it's the same on your iFinder.

  9. Hello,

New to geocaching and using my CS60. I have 2 questions. First, how do you use the geocaching feature? Garmin's website and the manuel leave you lost! Second has anybody bought and used the Topo USA or Topo 1:24,000 National Park

mapsource cds? I need pros and cons on both cds please.

    Thanks

    Adventure Racer

I have Topo USA which works really well with the color screen on the 60. The con is the road detail is a bit out of date and there are no road numbers for any sort of forest service or other land management roads. Otherwise the POI are great because it gives you Fire Lookouts, mountains and shelters. The most important part of it the elevation lines are still very accurate and very helpful.

  10. I would not play around with a 60C/CS in the water because it's USB connector on back of the unit is not perfectly flush with the plastic. That is the case with my 60C that I have. All the other parts seem to be water proof including the serial/power connector and antenna connector, but not the USB connector on my unit.

Just because the rubber caps don't seal perfectly doesn't mean the connectors themselves aren't sealed in the body of the GPS. I would suspect that the connectors are filled with epoxy on the inside of the GPS thus making it waterproof with or without the rubber caps. Otherwise they couldn't advertise there waterproof rating.

I've let mine sit underwater completely submersed for several minutes without any negative affects.

  11. Hi all,

I have a brand-new eTrex with 3.60 pre-loaded, so I don't think the firmware rev is at issue.

At least three conditions seem to accompany the spontaneous shutdowns.

    • I'm driving (I miss any shutdown warnings that might exist). But speed of recalcing position might be at issue.
    • Batteries are "low," at least less than half full by the battery level icon.
    • The map display is being refigured (switch from Nav to map mode) after having display a location miles away.

I vote for the computational intensity / power requirement model for explaining this.

I can't seem to find a way to set the battery saving mode.

I'm not putting duck tape on this.

I notice that one battery connection has a spring clip and the other just has two tabs. But the unit was just sitting "still," relatively "level" and not being jarred when this happened.

This is annoying as all get-up and erodes ones confidence in the unit.

What brand and type of batteries do you use?

  12. Missing the arrow

I just noticed that the arrow (pointer) is missing on the compass screen. After calling the Garmin tech, they correctly explained that this occurs when in "Autoroute" mode. I changed the mode to "prompt" instead and the arrow returns.

I believe the arrow will be there in autoroute mode with the latest firmware update.

  13. p.s. There is one thing that bothers me. When I use the right angle MCX connector for antenna it won't snap in all the way because the jack in the back case is recessed. I have to put a heavy elastic around it. If I use a straight MCX it sticks out far so when I put in in the case it pokes out and is also difficult to get in and out.

I have an antenna with a right angle as well. It goes in far enough to work but does look like it could go in further. As a note though the connector on my antenna is so tight I have to use a screwdriver to pry it back out.

Also I have not had the shut off issue. I'm still running sw version 3.30. Unfortunately my GPS has gone flying more then once and in none of those occasions has it shutoff due to the impact.

  14. I ordered a 60cs, and I should get it by Thursday. <_<

    Two quick questions:

    1. Will the auto-routing work faster with 24mb of maps loaded vs loading close to the 56mb max?

    2. If you press FIND-FIND does it pull up routing options to a waypoint that you have labeled "HOME"? (this works on my GPS V)

Thank you in advance for your help.

    1. No it routes pretty darn fast no matter what.

    2. It pulls up a list of the most recent search results.

  15. You can hold both.  If the Rhino operates like other Garmins you can toggle between the two map set.  If both are on one will "Dominate" and you will need to turn it off to see the other.

    How do you do that?

Once in your GPS call up a menu from the map page. You should have the option to turn on or off a specific map, or map set. Different Garmins do this a little differently.

I have the Vista. I will have to check it out. Thanks.

The vista is pretty much the same as all the other higher end Garmins. Once in the map setup menu go to the Map Information icon it's the one with the letter 'i' within a bubble. Once there hit Menu again and you will get the option to turn off or on whole map sets.

I have the topo mapset on, but no topo. Pretty weird.

Try turning off all mapsets and then turning on just topo.

  17. When building the map to transfer to the GPS you select the area you want from one map and then change to another map and add the area you want from that one as well. Once you have completed selecting maps sections from all your maps then you transfer the data to your GPS. Your GPS will then have multiple maps you can switch between.

  18. I would get Metroguide.  I have both and on my old Vista it was nearly impossible to use Topo on it due to the size of the screen and lack of color.  The Topo lines would blend with everything else leaving you trying to figure out which line was a road, creek, trail, or elevation line.  Metroguide does in fact contain nearly all the same data except for the lack of topography lines.

This is the answer I was looking for.. Thank you.. Decision made.

Your very welcome. Just so you know on one the new color GPS units such as the 60CS which I purchased recently the Topo map is fantastic.

Just as a side note the accuracy of the roads in Roads and Rec. and Topo is not the greatest. Many many missing and misplaced streets but it's not all lost it is very helpful at times but you just have to be prepared for it to be wrong at times.
