  1. I guess we must run in the same crowd. I will forward the email I got from Jean Anderson to you. It details a little more of their thoughts. Karen thought that it could be a two day thing but to keep it simple I think it would be better to have the 'students' register with Geocaching.com and do some homework prior to the outing. We could have them read up on what geocaching is, it's history, some terminolgy and some of the caches in the area. Then we could take them out to a good trail with several caches along it. And it is my thought to actually place a OLLI cache also. One suggestion for a geo trail would be ~ Celtic Hills CD Cache StumpView Where there’sa hill there’sa way! and then hike up further to place a new one. This is not a difficult trail and easy to access. Do you have any suggested trails, ideas?
  2. I serviced a printer for a customer a while back and told her about geocaching. She just sent me an email that said; " When you were here working on my printer, we discussed your interest in (passion for?) geocaching. After you left, I visited the web site you suggested and figured it would be something many Osher Lifelong Learning Institute "students" would really enjoy. Almost all of the classes involving hiking and/or geology have filled up very quickly. " She and some other advisors with OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute), which seems to be for people 50 and up that enjoy learning new things, think a class on geocaching would be of much interest. It would be a 1 day class that would expose the 'students' to what geocaching is and doing some caches. The class would be sometime between May 30 through August 25. Is anyone interested in helping put on a one day geocache seminar? I would guess we would take them on a hike that has several caches along it's course. And maybe even place a new cache as part of the experience.
  3. And I'll be out of state. Sounds like a fun weekend. You'll have to let us know how it goes.
  4. Vineyard Family, I see you list as a hobby, Hobbies: Golf Flying That sounds like an interesting spin on golf. How does one do golf flying? Is it with ultralites or with model airplanes? I'm always interested in unususual sports. I'm trying to learn submarine flyfishing but I keep getting my gear hung up on the conning tower. Oh well, maybe with a bit more practice.
  5. Welcome to the fabulous sport/hobby/social event/addiction of Geocaching. You will find that this is a great family activity with benefits to all. Tell us a little about yourselves. The Poison Oak Cachers is an informal, ad hoc group that meets a few times a year for a pizza or a picnic or a gourmet dinner with an open bar. (Well, so far no one has sprung for that, but we keep hoping. ) If you want to join us, just say so and it be so. Easy, huh? Some POC members are also wanting to do a group campout this spring. Welcome to the Poison Oak (itch, scratch) Cachers.
  6. Well I did it. A near 11 mile hike to celebrate my birthday. Yesterday I dropped my stalwart PT Cruiser off at Cerro Alto Campground and had Rikki drive me up Cuesta grade and drop me off at OP's Santa Lucia cache. I searched there and even with the clue was unable to find it. I guess it's MIA. (OP says this has happened before.) The morning started with the mountains kinda hazy and on the ridge it was quite windy. I set off hiking along the ridge road and easily found RBC in the Botanical area. The winds steadily dropped during the day but there remained a ground haze all day but still clear enough to see from Cayucos to Montana de Oro and inland into San Luis on the south side and much of the north county on the north side. I then hiked to The Treasure is Mine which is a bushwackers delight. I tried several approaches but gave it up as I wanted to complete my hike in a reasonable time. I would suggest using Google Earth to reconnoiter before attempting this one. My next stop was Tassajera peak where I created a new cache entitled Elevation Celebration in honor of my 60 years. Watch for it soon. I was going to place it at the top but when I got there I saw that the peak is covered with an ugly antenna farm so I found a lovely spot nearby that has excellent views and a nice spot to picnic. My next cache was Vista Cerro Alto which is a hard vertical hike and another DNF. Apparently there has been problems with this cache in recent months and someone even relocated it! Whereever it was relocated to was not near enough the coords and the description didn't match any boulder near them. I then continued on to a trail that cuts over to the campgrounds and walked the final leg of this near 11 mile hike. My feet and body were doing pretty well to this point but the last 45 minutes all downhill took a toll on my feet and knees. I was sure glad to see my cruiser in the parking lot. I thought about this hike last night and I believe this is the longest I've hiked in my entire life. I did some backpacking in my youth but I think about 8-9 miles was the longest stretch. If anyone had told me two years ago I would take up a hobby that had me climbing mountains for fun, I would have told them they are NUTS! I mean completely out of their tree! But here I am, climbing mountains, having fun and getting healthy and building stamina I have never had in my life. I tell you, I love this sport.
  7. Tell you what, I'll give $100 to anyone who rows or paddles their boat out there.
  8. Hi, thought I'd check to see if anything new was going on. I see OP is looking to go to Pinnacles in March. Too bad we'll have to miss that, sounds like fun. I'm flying to Tallahassee to visit my daughter and g-kids that week. I have been in touch with some Florida cachers to get names of some of their favorite caches. I want to introduce my daughter and grandkids to this great sport and see if I can get them hooked. I'm planning to do a big hike on this Saturday on the West Cuesta ridge in honor of my 60th BD. I plan to leave a car at Cerro Alto campgrounds and then be dropped off at Santa Lucia cache and hike the ridge trail. It looks to be about 10 miles. If anyone is interested in walking with me, feel free to call. 462-1248
  9. Hi, I'm a cacher from Calif. and am going to be visiting my daughter and grandkids in Tallahassee in March and want to introduce them to Geocaching. Their house is walking distance from Antimatter man (which I will visit as I am a science buff) and would like your opinion as to some of the better caches in that part of Tallahassee. The kids are ages 6-10 and full of energy. I would love to see some creative caches and some lovely views. Can you help me with a few suggestions?
  10. Anyone have a Garmin Mapsource East that I could borrow? I'm going to Florida for a week in March/April and want to load my GPSr.
  11. I thought I had better post something so people don't think Geo_cats got run over or something. Did a bit of caching over the holidays and did some fun ones in Las Vegas just before Thanksgiving. For those of you who missed the Box Canyon cache in Stadium Park in Atascadero, we have adopted and reactivated it. If you haven't done it, it's a nice one in a gem of a park. There are several trails nearby and a heavy duty climb up Pine Mountain if you are up to it. I've got a new one to post soon. (Would have done it tonight but the site is down for maintenance.) I need to do your Spooner Ranch one OP. It sounds like a good one and I need the exercise after all the eating that's been done these last two months.
  12. Either time is good for me. I'll probably be there at 6 because I'll be working in the area before then.
  13. Well, we better pin down a night before the month runs out on us. I propose a Friday night as so many have weekend plans that conflict with a Saturday or Sunday. I would suggest Friday the 18th or the 25th. The 25th might be in conflict with Thanksgiving plans however. What say the 18th? or the 25th?
  14. I believe the place you are referring to is: Village Host Pizza & Grill 2138 Broad Street, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401. It is next door to a car wash? The only other pizza place in that area is Fatte's Pizzas but that is mostly just take out. (Good pizza though.) We'll be out of town the weekend of the 11th but home the rest of the month.
  15. Doesn't look good from this area either. I guess we'll have to shoot for a spring campout. But how about a meet & greet somewhere in the next few weeks. Maybe a pizza get together or something along those lines?
  16. I just found out that the weekend of the 22nd is out for us also. I should have checked Rikki's calendar first. But the 29th & 30th are still a go if anyone else is interested.
  17. We were talking about a campout with geocache members and families. Anyone up for it on either of the last 2 weekends of October, 22-23 or 29-30? I drove through San Simeon SP on Thursday to check out the best spots and it is first come first served so one party could come and reserve spots for the others coming so we could have nearby spots. I found the consecutive even spots from 88 to 92, odd numbered 93-101, even 102-106 or even 62-68, all would be good camping spots with good shade, privacy and accessability to the beach and all. Or if most would prefer Montana de Oro, that would be to our liking also. San Simeon SP What say, anyone interested?
  18. Both campgrounds at Montana de Oro or San Simeon would hold motorhomes, campers, tents. Rikki & I have camped at MdO and this summer drove through SS State Pk. We marked on a map of the campground which spots we thought were best. MdO and SS are both open to first come, first served after the first of Oct. So either one would work. Whichever one we decide on someone could go early and reserve spots for the others. So if other POCers want to do a campout, and it sounds like enough of us are interested we need to do a rough poll on where and when.
  19. Many thanks to Naturesprite, Pointsaljim and Oreopony for putting together the orienteering get together! Much fun was had by all. Many of us wanted to learn about orienteering and this was an excellent introduction. Now we need to plan something, maybe for in the spring. I asked informally at the meet if some of the Poison Oak cachers liked to camp. In the few I asked, it looks like most do. I would like to make a suggestion that we plan a campout in the north county coastal area, say San Simeon or Montana de Oro. I know San Simeon State Park would be a great spot and from there we could do some geocaching in the Big Sur area or cross over to Hunter Liggett or do site seeing or just lay about on the beach. Others might want to visit Hearst Castle, especially if they've never visited it. Also at some times of the year the elephant seals are on some of the local beaches and are a big hit with the tourists. What do you think?
  20. No one has posted anything here for a few days so I will, just to keep the conversation going. Is anyone looking forward to this weekend like I am? How many of us are coming, any idea? BTW, anybody in the market for a good used GARMIN LEGEND GPS? I should have my Garmin GPSMAP 60CS COLOR by the weekend and will be selling the Legend. Nothing wrong with it, just had a hankering for the 60CS after checking out Oreopony's unit. I will be asking $125 for it.
  21. Thanks, I just picked up the Newtimes a few minutes ago and saw the article was finally published. I took John out in the springtime and it took this long for some reason. I guess it's not groundbreaking, earthshattering news to the muggle community. So any bumps you see are my normal lumpiness, not Ishumu induced. As for making us look respectable, I concentrated on the few sane, clean, and well spoken geocachers I know and tried not to mention the vast majority of us. Whenever the topic of bombs, cutting fences or driving FWD vehicles over petunia beds came up I quickly pointed out the beauty all around us and the healthy exercise we were getting. I am waiting until another outing to show John how to avoid punji sticks, booby traps, deadfalls and other various fun geocaching puzzles. As he was a muggle I just showed him how to avoid poison oak by closing his eyes and pushing through with bare hands and face.
  22. BTW, what kind of compass do we need for the Orienteering meet? I have a nice one but maybe I need something exotic?
  23. I just ordered a pair of XNation Sports.ankle gaiters for $10.22 w/ $5 shipping from Amazon. They seemed to be the cheapest and right for what I want. Most gaiters are for high boots, not hiking boots. I looked on eBay, my store of choice, but there wasn't much there and only from the UK. Now I wil have most everything I need for geocaching. I figure I can spend up to $40 a month for geocaching because that's what I save by not going to the gym. I guess my next upgrade will be to a color GPSr like OP's. I am envious of her. What model is it OP? So I can watch eBay for a good deal on one.
  24. Darn stickers! I just went out and did a little bushwacking today and got lots of foxtails in my boots and socks. When we were hiking C'ishumu someone mentioned something you can wear on your boots to protect the laces and prevent junk from entering your boots but darned if I can remember the name of them. (No, not duct tape.) I did some searching online but can't find any reference to lace protectors or boot covers. What am I looking for?
  25. Hi I just added a topic in another forum but thought one of you might figure out what the heck this sign is. What Is It? Unknown Warning Sign, Can anyone identify this sign?
