  1. I'd guess that your's is a unique situation. There isn't much DoE activity that would require surveying. I've never seen anything like it in southern Illinois. There might be some near Paducah, KY. Around here, there are alot of ACoE markers on and around levees, though I couldn't find any of the stupid things yesterday. I'd be interested in seeing a pic of those super-fancy hydraulically encased steel rods though. Sounds cool. rdw
  2. First, finding a benchmark on the front lawn of Mattoon city hall that had been reported missing by the USGS in the early 80's. It seems not to be in the Groundspeak database so I haven't been able to log it. I did submit a recovery to the NGS though. The other is MONADNOCK. It was one hell of a climb for me. Consider that from the bottom to the top of Illinois is about 1000 ft. From the main Monadnock parking lot to the top is approximately 1800 ft. I was quite pleased with myself when I finally made it to the top. The weather was excellent and the view was beautiful. Plus there is a cache at the top too. I look forward to climbing it again the next time I'm in New Hampshire. rdw
  3. "Control Point" covers just about everything. Steeples, elevated tanks, benchmarks, antennas, triangulation discs, etc. BM has never sounded quite right. rdw
  4. That bait page is like magnetic refrigerater gone awry. "beaver wastes studies before instruction" "Europe broken collecting charcters for anxious luxury" "coke packaging paris australian" "shipment indicated stamped ordered porno academic goods" And this was all from one page. rdw

  6. I had dial-up until 2 weeks ago (DSL now ), but the most tedious part for me has always been downloading from the camera, cropping, saving a high res photo of the mark for myself, then cropping more, scaling the image down, naming it, saving it, and then finally uploading it. Repeat for any "area" pics. It's the only downside I've found to benchmarking. This is also why I have 5 or 6 pictures sitting in the camera for benchmarks I logged a couple weeks ago. What a pain. Sigh... rdw

  8. I've stated my reasons before, but I'll state them again. I have submitted several official recovery reports to the NGS. The criteria I use when considering reporting to the NGS are very strict. The standards for posting a log here are relaxed in comparison. If I looked for a few minutes and didn't find a mark, that's a not found, but I certainly don't want that forwarded to the NGS. If Groundspeak starts forwarding logs to the NGS, I'll never log another benchmark again. Besides, as RubberToe noted, individuals can submit to the database and get credit. rdw
  9. The abutment(sp?) is where the bridge starts/ends. It is where the roadway leaves the ground and goes onto the bridge. It is usually a substantial concrete wall. I found two markers within the last week that were on abutments. And if I'm wrong, I'm sure survey tech will correct me soon enough. rdw Abutment -- | | V---------------------------------------------########## | | /##################### | | /####################### | | /######################### | | /###########################~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~/##############
  10. You could try saving the file and then opening the file by double-clicking on it or opening it from within EasyGPS. This has worked for me in the past. As for browsers, I've been using Mozilla on Windows since Milestone 17 or 18, and Mozilla 1.0 since I converted to Linux about 2 months ago. Never had a problem with the site. wcgreen: Are you using Mozilla on Windows? My other computer is running Win98 and the Back button in Mozilla does not work. Neither does Back from the Go menu or the right-click menu. The only way I can go back is via the history list in the Go menu. rdw
  11. GD1264 - Set in the top of the south headwall of the DRINKWATER SEWER FLOODGATE Umm? Okay. rdw
  12. "Ma'am, that's not a frisbee, that's the top of a land mine. We're just lucky nobody hit it." rdw
  13. I got my desktop full of geocaching icons, despite my attempts at organization. I decided to install Linux 2 days ago, finally got the modem working about half an hour ago, and now have a totally new desktop to make a mess of. Whoo-hoo! rdw

  16. Geez, that's hard to read. Please use more capital letters and punctuation. Commas, periods, question marks, etc. Was the cache where the desciption and hint indicated it should be? If so, you probably should leave it. That's where the hider intended it to be, whatever their reason may be. If it was clearly where it shouldn't be, then you should consider moving it. If in doubt, don't move it. rdw
  17. Sadly, not geocaching busy. Other stuff busy. And it's going to be that way for a long time. CYBret, it's driving me crazy to see all those caches pop up around my old area while Southern Illinois has very few. Markwell, I still hope to get back to Chicago to finish the Pi someday but it's now a mighty long drive. I've placed a few (still waiting for someone to find The BIG Confluence Cache and So Close, Yet So Far) and occasionally find a few. But for the most part, I geocache in spirit by checking in on the Central Illinois caches and cachers. rdw

  19. I usually carry an FRS radio while I cache. Since I cache alone, it's usually just scanning for something interesting. I rarely hear anything down here in the boonies, but I heard some conversations the few times I used it while caching in Chicago. rdw
  20. Read the Integrity? thread from the old forums. A link to the cache that started it all is in the first post. rdw
  21. Every time I visit my cache at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi River, I have the urge to release a message in a bottle. But then I look around and notice the amount of crap that is already in the rivers, realizing that I would only be adding to the problem. As fun as it would be to release one, and as thrilling as it would be to find one, I feel the best thing I can do is pick up other people's trash. rdw
  22. The basemap and downloaded maps (Mapsource) are totally different memory areas. The basemap is always there and cannot be deleted. The uploaded maps can be changed as many times as you want. FYI, all old uploaded maps in the GPSr's memory are deleted before the new map set is loaded. rdw
  23. quote:Originally posted by Team GeoDat: I never said anything - do you think I should have sent the cache owner an email? Maybe if he hears from a couple of geocachers about this problem he'd move it. Yes. The cache owner can't fix the problem if he doesn't know there is a problem. Any responsible cache owner would want to know about this and would take the necessary actions to prevent it from happening again. rdw
