  1. I fumbled around with a bunch until I got the Nexxtech brand, worked like a charm.
  2. Firstly, please turn off your CAPS key, this is viewed as YELLING on the internet and won't speed up any replies. Secondly, have you installed Mapsend (I'm assuming it came with the unit), and looked at the manual under "Transferring Waypoints, Routes and Track under Mapsend"? It fully explains, step by step, how to get waypoints from your computer to your unit. EDIT: we were both replying at the same time, combine the information and that should get you started.
  3. I tried your maps and I must say - THANKYOU!!!! A lot better than the garmin product. Here's a blatant hint for you: I'm located in the Toronto area so I'm waiting for these maps to be added to your great collection Once again, thanks so much - a lot of hard work went into this project.
  4. Just use the Microsoft Streets & Trips 2002-2006 and it will convert it properly, I've used it successfully.
  5. Well, you can only load Garmin maps to your GPSr for the most part, and they will need to be unlocked to your particular device. You're going to have to go along a VERY long, involved route to actually MAKE your own maps via cgsmapper programme. It will involve various programmes, it's not like taking a JPG or BMP and loading it into your unit.
  6. I don't get it, the Fry's salesboy told me the same thing as Best Buy. That the update is the full version. How can that be right when they are selling it for $70 and everyone else is buying it online for over $100? My 60CX came with nothing but Base Maps so I need a full LICENSE, not an update license. ... because they're hoping the Average Joe Public won't know how to do the full install from the update DVD. Most folks will think "I don't have it so I have to buy the full install" or else "I already have it so I'll just buy the update". It's easier for Garmin to make almost identical installs rather than two separates. They just add a little program at the beginning of the update which is different than the full install. One checks on your system, and one doesn't.
  7. It's a file that's already located on the DVD. At LOT of update software is actually a full install.
  8. Actually, the update DVD has the full install in it if you know how to get to it. Go to Garmin2008/Windows/MSI and click on CNNANT2008Update_ENU.msi If the mods think it's wrong posting this, then feel free to delete it. It's just knowledge, it's not a crack.
  9. I use a handheld for trails and for driving. When you're driving, and pull off the road somewhere, you can zip it onto the storage compartment. You can use a mini USB/AC outlet for constant power. My Etrex Legend CX has even navigated when inside the storage compartment!!! I sit mine inside the dash, to the left, easily visible. If you're travelling in cities in less than desirable areas, you're going to have to disconnect the dash mounted device and put it away, otherwise you'll come back to a broken window. This is another reason why handheld is better for both purposes. Just my opinion.
  10. Well, when my hubby wanted new drivers (golf clubs), and I didn't know which ones to get, I just got toy golf clubs and wrapped the money around the shaft. It gave him the idea of what I was giving, and the funds to buy his own clubs of his own choosing. What about wrapping up a small box, similar size to a GPS, download and print off a pic of a GPS, paste on the front, and put the $$$ in the box. Just tell him that you wanted him to be able to choose his own. Guys HATE it when others choose their gadgets for them - they want to feel master of their toy domaine. LOL
  11. Well, someone else still has it on their website..... quick, get it before they get sued too!! LOL http://www.geocomp.com.au/geocalc/
  12. If you are thinking of getting the card in case you want to upgrade your unit, this info might help. Getting the CD will allow you to install it on TWO units. You get to also have the program & maps on your PC, send the maps to the SD card and if you ever need to upgrade, just re-register the software to your new GPSr with Garmin and your maps will also work on the new unit. Having the CD will allow you to install the program on a desktop and a laptop - very convenient! Another option: Mapsource Metroguide does not need to be unlocked for each GPSr and with a small programme called MetroGold, the autoroutable features can be transferred with the maps. My buddy has the same unit (Etrex Legend CX) with CityNav and I have Metroguide, and we can't see any difference between the two programmes while we're travelling. Just a thought.
  13. Well, I'm the odd duck here. I've done all of the above and now Mapsource won't work. I'd changed the map dropdown menu to Topo East and all of a sudden, Mapsource shut down. Now, I keep reopening it, it opens, and then immediately closes. My registry address for the Topo East files exactly matches their location on the C: drive so I'm stumped. If I reinstall, and don't change the registry, I can run Mapsource to pull up the maps via the CD. Any ideas?? UPDATE: Wasn't getting error message on the PC but when I installed on the laptop, Garmin gave error message and directed me to their site for a patch (Strange that message didn't pop up on the PC). Patched both PC & laptop and all working just fine. Thankyou so much for posting this method of running the files from the PC - saves SO MUCH WORK!!!!! This sure is a great place - I've learned a LOT about my GPSr while reading over the files. CHeers, folks!
  14. I had one brand of serial>USB adapter (can't remember name because it's in the garbage) which I could not get to work, no matter how many drivers, etc I downloaded off the net. Bought a Nexxtech brand PN 2608042 for $29.95 which came with installation software, and worked like a charm with my ol' yellow ETrex.
  15. Great little site for converting GPS readings: http://jeeep.com/details/coord/
