  1. If you turn it off, take out the batteries, turn it back on, it will behave nicely again for an short period of time. Yes I do have the latest firmware version, etc. Because when I call tech support I have taken the batteries out, etc and it is working just fine they can't guide me on what to do. Yes it has happened in the hiking mode. We are in the middle of the woods. Hiking it's .10 mile away, drops down to 520 feet, keep going it's 300 feet. Then suddenly it just freezes and is done until you turn it off and take out the batteries. It can happen with brand new batteries, etc. It can happen in the middle of a field with no canopy cover. It can and will do it just about anywhere it dang well pleases. I guess next time it decides it's done for the day I need to have tech supports number on my cell phone and call from the middle of the woods? I am beyond frustrated at this point. But I am very glad to hear that I am not the only one that has a 40 and a 60 that at times can become very expensive paper weights. Last night a new geocach came up close to my house and I plugged in my 60 and was off to grab my first, first to find of the year so for now I am happy, until the next time I am soooo close to the cache when my PN-60 decides it's done for the day.
  2. Thanks for all of the tips. Yes we have updated with the latest firmware. We have done everything they said to try. It doesn't happen right away but after caching for maybe an hour or so. It just decides that it has had enough and freezes. We were driving closer and closer to a cache. It's .30 mile away, then it's .28 mile away and then it just freezes on .28 mile and we drive and drive and drive and it just remains frozen in time. After only using it for a weekend and having very few caches loaded on it I sure didn't expect the same thing as the PN-40. With that we had it for about 2 years and found 450 caches with it so I could see how something could have gone wrong, but with only 3 days of caching and not power caching by any stretch of the imagination I didn't expect it to just freeze and stop working.
  3. Started having problems with our PN-40 freezing up and rebooting it the middle of the woods. Called Delorme and was told that the SD card was probably corrupt and we needed to mail it in for service. So we got a PN-60 for Christmas. Haven't had the time to test it out until recently. Took it out Friday, Saturday and by Sunday it was freezing up on us also. Called Delorme and they don't know why and said that it is very uncommon. Anyone else had this happen with their PN's? Any suggestions or tips. The 60 only has about 20 caches loaded on it and was only used for 3 days so I doubt that the SD card is corrupt. Love the delorme's but very frustrated at this point. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
  4. We got a PN-60 for Christmas and it has been sitting in the box ever since. It finally got warm enough for me to get the itch to go geocaching. Updated my profile for the new device. Previously we had a Pn-40 so I pretty much knew how to download to it. Plugged it in and clicked send to GPS. It went through step one and then when it tried step two it said device not connected. Can anyone help me with what maybe the problem? Search the tech documents and nothing like this came up. Thanks in advanced for the help.
  5. We have a PN-40 and haven't cached in months. When I tried yesterday to download caches I got a read circle and next to it was the word download. I downloaded the new firmware and updates. I have googled the topic and found how to reset some of the settings. I still am getting the same red circle and download. My husband is working today and would love to take our son to do some caching. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  6. I have been asked to teach a class to other Cub Scout Leaders at our annual Cub Scout College. I am really excited and a tad bit nervous. I am not one for public speaking, but I am super excited to have more scouts out enjoying this great hobby. If you were teaching a class what would be your must talk about topics? Thank you in adavance for your help. I have some ideas of what I would like to discuss but what I think is important about the hobby might not be what some of you more vetrans think would be important.
  7. Our local council is trying to get geocaching part of the scouting community as part of their 100th anniversary. We have 5 travel bugs related to scouting 4 of which have been released. 5 Travel Bug Tags standing for the 5 Pillars of Scouting – Leadership (SCAN31), Character (SC16V3), Achievement (SCQF4T), Service (SCQ455) & Outdoors (SCKWFQ) Following is the rest of what we are trying to do with geo caching in the up coming months. Cache to Eagle Cache to Eagle is a little more complicated as we’ve been asked to identify cache sites from recent eagle projects that would be associated with each of the 12 points of the Scout Law. This took a part of the time to gather the information but it is attached by district so that hopefully we could spread the caches throughout the council. Again, if someone would be willing to collect thoughts about these possible sites and begin the process of making contact with the property owners that would be great – just let me know. With this program, geocachers would have to visit all 12 sites in order to earn one of the Cache to Eagle Patches. Again we’d like to have this all set once the snow melts. I’m told we can get more than our original 20patches and will hear how that works early next year.
  8. We have had sucess. I had put a watch on this cache and I receive a message from the cache owner that they are disabling the cache until the owner and his bees return from Florida. There were no other posts about incidents so I am not sure why the change of heart, but whatever the reason I am very happy that other families will not be going to retrieve the cache and getting attacked by the renter. I also have found the courage to get back in the saddle again. However, every time I see someone approaching I get this sick feeling in my stomach. I am sure with time this will pass.
  9. I love the new attributes! They made me chuckle hard. As for the last post about the renter and the property. I will set the stage a little. On the corner is a house which the renter rents. Next to the house is a business. Honey Land Farms. The cache is placed on the property of the business not actually on the property the renter rents. The renter just feels that he can and should control what happens on the business property also because he rents the house from the business. We were parked in the business parking lot and searching on the business property. We were in no way shape or form on the rental property. I really wish the cache would be removed but I have done all I can. I have contacted the cache owner and I have contacted the reviewer in our area. Now if someone else gets attacked at this cache it's not my fault.
  10. We are very new to this sport, so I wasn't aware that there are other platforms to get the caches out. Thanks for the prompt responses.
  11. I know this has been discussed before but I could not find it. There is a new premium member series in our area. The series has 40 caches related to the Harry Potter books. As I was looking over the series last night I found many of the caches were found 2 or 3 days prior to them being published? How does this occur?
  12. Seeing that the cache owner would not remove this cache. I thought I would try my luck with the reviewer in the area. Their response was that the property owner had granted permission and as long as permission was granted the cache could stay. They also went on to say this is a part of caching, that if someone broke their leg trying to climb a tree to retrieve a cache the cache wouldn't be removed for being dangerous. I don't agree with that remark what so ever. There are dangers with this sport and you can pick and choose which caches to choose based on the terrain rating and cache description. This cache has an inherent danger being the renter of the property. My comments will slip towards the bottom and eventually not been seen on the first cache page. The cachers retreiving this cache will not have any warning about the violent renter they may run into while caching. I have done my part to try and warn cachers in our area of this danger. I have washed my hands of the responsiblity I feel. If any more blood is shed at this cache it will not be on my hands, but on the cache owner's hand's and the reviewer in our area. Our GPS has been sitting on the counter just calling my name as I walk out the door each day. There is a new 40 cache Harry Potter series that has recently been posted and I am starting to ge the itch to go back out. Not sure I can muster up the courage to go out yet, but at least the itch is there.
  13. I really like the advice of the pepper spray. I used to carry some when I was a young single woman, but have long since tossed it. I will need to go online and order some to be stocked and ready in our geo bag. Maybe even find a neat way to attach it to my walking staff. Does anyone know if there are legal consquences to using pepper spray?
  14. As the original poster I do not like where this thread has headed. This is not about gun control or use of physical violence. I wanted to get my story out so others can take caution when thinking about finding a cache hidden on private property even when permission has been granted. I also needed to vent. I have been following the thread and most of you have been very supportive and helpful. I do see that the owner of the cache has now moved the cache away from the building and has made note that the renter has a mental issue. I do not agree with the cache owner's decision, but it is his cache. I have made my post on the cache as as warning to others. I don't feel given the attack and knowing that this man is mentally unstable that a cache should continue at this location. But each cacher can make their own informed decision after reading the posts and comments for themselves. Thank you to those who have given their support. As for the others take the gun control posting to the off topic area of the forum.
  15. Thank you for all of your kind words. Just a littlie more information. I did let the owner of the cache know about the experience and he has disabled the cache and emailed the owner who winters in Florida with his bees. I do have a nice walking stick that my son made for me at mom & son camp. I did have it out of the vehicle as I was going to attempt to go up the hill with my familly. As for carrying a gun, I wish!!!! They are trying to get the concealed carry law passed here and I really wish they would for many reasons. I am an avid hunter and fisherwoman and would love to be able to legally carry a gun. As for assault charges I am not sure what the police were doing. They took our verbal statment and my husband's written statement. They had to try several times to get the statement of the tenant. Not sure why it took several attempts. One police officer went to get his statement and came back to tell the other officer he was unable to get the statement and he felt that both of them needed to try again. As for going out again I think that it will take time to heal. Thank goodness we have had a few inches of rain over the past few days and things are mucky and muddy right now. Time heals everything. I am just not sure how long it will take before I am comfortable enough to head back out into the world of caching again.
  16. I think today was offically our last day geocaching. We were doing a series of three on bee-keeping in our area. The 2nd in the series was located on a property were they keep bees and have a little honey store. Permission was granted by the property owner for the placement of the cache and his name was listed in the description. We pull into the parking lot and get out. From the logs you can see the cache from the parking lot but it up a little hill. With my bum ankle I decide to stay back at the vehicle while my son and husband head up the hill. It was a quick find. They shout down that they found a geocoin and will be leaving a our travel bug. Then I turn around and a drunken enraged man starts yelling at me about trepassing, etc. I try to explain geo caching to him, but he clearly doesn't want to hear my explaination. My husband can see and her the rucas and comes down the hill. He too tries to explain geocaching and shows him the gps with the owner's name listed as giving permission. The drunken man starts swearing in front of our son. My husband calming asks him to stop swearing and tells him that we will leave the property. The man grabs ahold of my husband's shirt and starts swinging at him. My son is standing in terror watching these two exchange punches. I call 911 from my cell phone and it bounces off the towers in the next county. She keeps asking me where I am and what county I am in. I don't know!!!! I am panicking as the two continue to fight and my son is crying. I try to tell her that I am geocaching in the country and I have coordiantes of where I am but I am not sure if we crossed the county line and which county I am in. Using th ping from our cell phone she is able to determine that we are not in the county in which the call was sent to. My husband manages to get in the vehicle and get away from the man and wait at an intersection until the police arrive. As the police were taking our statements another geocaching family arrives. The police go over to question them and they too show the gps that shows the property owner has given permission. According to one of the police officers this isn't the first time they have been called to the house. The owner had given permission to some hunters to be on the land and the renter didn't agree so he confronted the hunters and the police had to get involved. As much fun as we had finding #204 caches, I think we are hanging up our GPS and staying indoors. The cub scout pack we run was just starting to enjoy some of the local series like the sponge bob series. Guess we will stick with teaching the boys knot tying this summer.
  17. Grandma bought our son a geomate jr. for Christmas along with the update USB cable. We have gone to the mygeomate.com website to do the updates and we keep getting an error that says internet explorer has stopped working. We have tried many things and just can't get this update to work. Anyone else had these problems?
  18. We recently started caching and have decided to put out a few caches of our own. We placed one in a cemetery and we got two complaints. The first was why didn't we use the hollow logs for a hiding place. Did we not see them. The second was from a different cacher asking that we change the name to not include any punucation marks. I was slightly offended by both of the remarks. Am I just being sensitive? I wanted to say that if they had a better hiding spot then why didn't they hid a cache there first and secondly I will name my cache whatever I want.
  19. I have signed up for instant notifications, but several mystery caches have been placed in our area and I did not receive notifications. I checked my settings for notifications and there is not an option for mystery caches. Am I doing something wrong?
  20. I have learned to carry band-aids. The camo ones go over best in our family. Not only for our son who seems to forever be getting scratched, and even used them on myself after a run in with pickers. We have what we call a Geo sack. A cheap little backpack given to us by my son's orthodonist. In there we keep our trackables, a good supply of golf pencils, swag, bandaids, replacement batteries, small LED flashlights, bug spray. Also in the cache mobile we always keep walking sticks, and schloop boots as we call them for those wet caches.
  21. I am having a problem with my Delorme PN-40. I plug it into the comptuer and try to upload field notes, which I have done several times in the past. Now when I do it. The computer doesn't show that anything is plugged into to retreive a file from. I am not very computer literate and am probally not explaining it well. Anyone else have this problem?
  22. I am not very comptuer savy so I am not sure what updates we have. I did as Big Dawg said and it worked perfectly. Thanks for the help!
  23. I have a Delorme PN-40 and I can't seem to delete field notes off of it. Everytime we come back from caching and up load field notes it up loads ALL of the caches we have ever found. Anyone know of a way to delete old field notes off of it? Thanks for the help.
  24. Thank you so much for the link. It was a rusty bolt that seemed to match the bridge it was on. Exactly like the one listed in on your link. Thanks at least I know it is replacable.
  25. Thank you so much for sharing your stories. I am glad that I am not the only fumble fingers out there. I have not heard back from the owner of the cache, but it was truly an accident and all I can do is apolgize. I have offer to pay to replace it. The thing is I am not sure if it is replacable. If it is not replaceable well then I guess they should not have used something so valuable. I was so excited to find it after several no finds. That I just fumble it and dropped it right in.
