  1. REI has a great policy, but I am not going to rip myself off. You see, it is a co-op, and that means we share the profits...through dividends. Now, I don't audit this to see I am getting ripped off through accounting practices, but I have been a member for 38 years and have been satisfied with what I am getting there. Yes, I did get the PN40 there on sale for $250, and hmmm...should I trade up for the PN60? It will cost me some more money though...Na...don't think so.
  2. I have been doing paperless for two years with: 1. a NUVI 2. a Vista HCx 3. a Delorme PN-40 You have to use GSAK plus a NUVI macro.... Now, I have an Android smartphone... With a smartphone now, you have the best of both worlds. However, any of the handhelds is often necessary for accuracy. IMHO, I would chose the PN40 or Garmin Vista HCx. The NUVI is still used to drive there.
  3. Isn't the PN60 cheaper? Smaller screen but the buttons are easier to use. I was at REI when I bought the PN40 and loved it. My wife does too because the buttons make it easier to use. I got an Oregon but returned it because the screen was hard to see in the sunlight. Either way, bring extra AA batteries. Now, I have an Android as a supplement.
  4. I am a network and computer tecky....Apples are for some people with a lot of money and loyalty. Microsoft and Goggle are for the rest of the people. It is affordable... like costing a lot less and is more common place, like at work. That is why a PC with Windows 7 will cost $400 vs. a Mac for more that twice as much. Now...the MacBook may look a lot nicer and is lighter, but the generic PC will out run it in performance ...especially for the tecky types...where we overclock the processor..etc.. Androids like PCs are more adjustable than Apples...if you know what it is you that need to tweak....Apples are simpler...
  5. As an older cacher...I cached without smartphones before I got the Android. I did not consider iPhones because they were limited to ATT. Now, Verizon has it too, but the Androids are available on many other carriers...or most all of the other ones. I use Virgin Mobile for $25 a month for unlimited data and text.
  6. Just a quicky. iPhone--two carriers...Android...everybody else [including Virgin Mobile for $25 month for unlimited data and 300 minutes of talk--i never talk, i have a company phone anyway..i use Virgin Mobile]... iPhone--can't change the battery....most androids you can have and install an extra battery without sending it to apple... iPhone--no SD memory chip capable...you got to buy it with installed memory and cannot change it...Android phone...you choose the micro-SD chip size that you want...there is a slot...you can remove it to download photos and upload music....you can change it at will... iPhone--you need to use itunes for uploading music... Android...just copy and paste it into the micro-SD memory chip... iPhone--proprietary charger and cable connection....Androids...most use the standard micro USB connection [i have an LG]... Android is easier to connect to corporate Microsoft Exchange email systems. I know because I am a network guy... Android users need a g-mail account...which is free.. Android is Google friendly! including Google Maps and Google Earth which is of great use to geocachers! And the GC-ing app seems to work pretty well [although I still do PQs and use the NUVI and PN40 plus VistaHCx as geocaching tools...mainly for ease and battery consumption].
  7. My 2 cents...this is geocaching...not Facebook... I don't mention GCing in my Facebook and I don't blog in my logs [hmmm..that rhymes..oddly enough].
  8. Next best thing, I bring the wife, MaksMom, and she is an All-American mom looking type that no LEO would question...plus people love her smile.
  9. I have some in my garage. Others have been muggled. I have rescued some from other COs and was willing to returned them [they were wet and soaked..etc...but nobody wanted them back]. If I happen to retrieve them I hang them in my garage on a bulletin board.
  10. Ditto. And if you're dumb enough to admit you didn't sign my log, outside of tremendous circumstances, be prepared for a deleted log. ditto...if you don't say you didn't sign the log...I won't say anthing.... But if you say you didn't...I would like an explanation... I use to think that you had to sign the log, but nowhere in the guideline does it say you HAVE to...You should have a picture or something as proof and that would be a help if there are any questions. But the guidelines are not specific about having to sign the log.
  11. I went with a PN40 before the PN60 came out. Mostly my wife uses it because it is easy to use. Otherwise, I have Garmins. If I am alone, I will use the PN40 and occasionally, my Android phone for more information. I also use a NUVI on the dash to get me there.
  12. I have done this once...gone back with a container that I did not need and rehid the cache with the salvageable contents. It is still there. It is a neighbor to one of my caches.
  13. Why what happened when you got the 1st one? It was a nano in the forest. I guess nobody cared of FTFing it so I went instead. It was rewarding but the excitement proved too much. I think I only have two that is not shared...and yes..that is because it was in the middle of the day....basically not a ftf-er...I prefer traveling and and caching with my wife.
  14. I am following you here...but you need a question mark...like HUH???? go back to the store and get a manual....
  15. REALLY??? everybody and their uncle too...is just using the geocaching app on their smart phone to start. I sse you have no finds at all....HUH?? Edit: what is going on in Texas anyway???
  16. I don't get FTF...I sleep in.... BUT now, I have a smart phone because I can afford it...and that will change the game...hahaha....
  17. OK..I just skimmed this topic.. Have anyone paid to play golf at at a club? That will be far more than a PM on GC-ing dot com. That is one reason I don't golf, although I live in a golf development. I say...pay the PM..pay for the geocaching app... YOU got to pay to PLAY! Pay for GAS too... OLD saying... gas, grass, or a**....
  18. I ALWAYS WEAR GLOVES! if I don't it bothers me...
  19. I would use a Pn60....unless your budget dictates a Garmin touch screen...
  20. thank-you for your time, I may just drop it of and let it run free.I USED YOUR SUGGESTION AND FOUND IT WAS AN 0 (ZERO) NOT AN O, HAVE NOW LOGGED IT. I hate it ...Americans always saying oh.. instead of zero....It is a number..not a letter...
  21. since almost the beginning I use the garmin vista HCx....it has a compass.. also use a NUVI with the pilotsnipes macro for paperless geocaching....that got me to the first 750 caches or so...[in the first year] Then I added the PN40... then I added the android smart phone... but if i were to start over, I would use a PN60 plus a cheap NUVI [Garmin 255W]... smartphone is good but lacks battery stamina...and spotty reception........PN40-60 uses AAs....changeable in the field... IMHO of course...AB
  22. Your wife can have a separate account and would receive her own emails. We have separate accounts because we don't always cache together. So does my daughter.
  23. I say I am alohabra....unless I am in Hawaii...I will say Aloha Brah! I am alohabra... Nobody will remember your real name unless you are meeting other cachers at events regularly.....I know I don't!
