  1. You mention your son is going to use it (Does he drive?). Plus, you said he is going geocaching. The TT One seems to be a car GPSr. Most people will recommend a Garmin handheld for geocaching. And that includes me (I have both--Garmins). My recommendation for you: Garmin eTrex Legend® HCx My own: Garmin exTrex Vista HCx with 24K Topo maps My main requirement: long battery life and replacable AA batteries (car GPSr have short battery life on the trail and once dead, it is useless) There are a lot of topics about this in this forum already (search is your friend).
  2. Thanks, I have my handheld already, Just looking for a good car one that would let you add in the cords. How can you tell that you can add cords in when you are looking at the specks. *on a Garmin Nuvi, you can do that, but..... *typing in coordinates are not important to me...I just send it from the geocaching.com page *with a garmin Nuvi and there is a Garmin plug-in that allow that to happen *I also use Garmin so I can use my maps in my handheld and my car gpsr (just got the 24K topo and they are an excellent addition to both GPSrs). *Since I am a premium member, I can use pocket queries to load both up at the same time with about four hundred sites or so. They then appear on the car gpsr's map that way also. Having said that, I have already seen a lot of people doing that already on this forum. The Garmin Nuvis also allow you to use Pilotsnipe's macro to load the cache information into the car gpsr.
  3. Mine doesn't. I can hold those bars down all day and nothing happens. *The 255W I got for my daughter does not work like that. It has a "My location" function though for coordinates. *My older 650W does work from the signal bars. *But for Geocaching I prefer the Vista HCx with 24K Topo maps. Lithum batteries last for weeks(!!) if you turn it off when you are not reading it.
  4. "If you really need it - on a PC - hold down the Alt key and type 0176 " I like it. Now that is the kind of information I may need in the futre.
  5. I use PilotSnipe's macros - the geocaches are only in custom POI, not in Favorites. OK...I will buy that but I cannot seem to clear the GCxxxx numbers out of favorites.
  6. Rod, When I use a car GPSr by itself, I use the satellite page only, I do not input coordinates. I print the details of the geocache and read the coordinates there. Then I walk around until the GZ (ground zero) numbers line up on the GPSr. I have since used a two GPSr system, a NUVI to drive there with (plus paperless geocaching details) and a Vista HCx to get the final location. Hope this helps, Aloha.
  7. BTW, I bought a 255W for my daughter for car use. Pricing is good now. Edited reply...I think I can close this issue/thread...read some of the forums and found a solution. I found that I can edit the gpx file in Garmin\GPX on the unit with Easy GPX software and then save the new file back to the Garmin. Actually to do it properly, I moved the file to my desktop and then edited it and then copied back to the Garmin. However, using the NUVI macro to make custom POIs, will result in waypoints stored in the Favorites also.
  8. I have not figured out how to delete the favorites in my NUVI.. ...I am using the paperless caching macro and can remove the POIs but the favorites and icons are still on my screen. I would like to start over with new POIs and waypoints.
  9. I am using a mid range priced Garmin Vista HCx...(always get the H model which has a high sensitivity reciever), $215 at Amazon. I would consider the Mid High: Garmin 60CSx $290 if you want a bigger screen. I also have a Nuvi for car navigation and for paperless geocaching (I set it up using info from this forum...it does not come that way from Garmin). I use the two GPSrs together....Nuvi to get there and for cache info...and the Vista for the final track down. I bought an Oregon 300 orignally but was not happy with the dim screen and the colorful backgrounds also made it hard to see.....it was on sale for $350 with rebate.
  10. Outside of the contents...I thought I would mention some dangers..... I usually use gloves but I still smashed my hand recently. The object was heavy and slipped with my hand under it and smash! oww! I'll live though.. and some ice made it much better. So, just look out for those things.
  11. Well with a Garmin Nuvi, you can do this. Paperless geocaching to go with your VistaHCx. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=193374
