Driving GPS That Can Also be Used for GC'ing
AlohaBra and MaksMom replied to jststmpit's topic in GPS technology and devices
There is a new Macro that work great. You just need to pay for the new version of GSAK 8. I just tested it and it is a direct replacement for the old pilotsnipes. -
THANKS, ...I JUST TESTED THIS and yes it works perfectly. BUT, you will have to pay $20 to update GSAK to version 8! For me, I will use the German Macro for now, since I have an Oregon and will not need the description, logs and hint that you will get with this MACRO....but for 20 buck [for GSAK 8] it is worth it, if you don't want an Oregon or PN60.

I guess everyone knows the Pilotsnipes has stopped working. I ended up using a German one [nuvifavoriteexport.gsk] for now on the NUVI. This is OK, since now I have a PN40 plus and Oregon 450 to give me detailed information. In your case you can save a PQ to your phone [GCing App] and bring the NUVI for finding caches by entering coords manually. Yes there is a direct replacement for the Pilotsnipes macro Nuvi_GPX_by_CT.Gsk Works like a charm

I use a Nuvi 255W plus handhelds Oregon and PN40 for the two of us. I guess everyone knows the Pilotsnipes has stopped working for the NUVI. I ended up using a German one [nuvifavoriteexport.gsk] for now on the NUVI. This is OK, since now I have a PN40 plus and Oregon 450 to give me detailed information. Using GSAK [v7] of course. BTW, car navigation is so important for geocaching. -

Burying cache on private property

With 15 acres, why do you have to bury it? How about a fake tree stump? -

I use a Gerber Mini ... mostly as a nano log retrieval tool...but it comes in handy [i hang it on my belt]. I also have a AAA flashlight attached. But I keep other TOTT in the cache-mobile including a pickup tool [like for picking up garbage and such]. That has become pretty useful on many occasions. It is good for stuff up high. You can also use it to pickup garbage so muggles think you are there for maintenance. The other main item I insist upon is a pair of mechanics gloves, which I carry in my back pocket [i usually were cargo pants]. edit for spelling...i hate spelling errors... -

Puzzle and Multi Caches
AlohaBra and MaksMom replied to Cissy PSP's topic in General geocaching topics
My answer is that is a hassle since I don't do puzzles which sometimes involve computer programming knowledge. It involves just archiving your cache or try to email the other CO about it. Either way...it is a hassle... -
Biking is cool in certain places...but the car is faster. It depends on the power trail. On a bike...it is a stop and go and dismounting plus getting the GPS off of the bike etc...sometimes hiking it is more enjoyable. Unless you have two GPSrs and then you can use one on the bike and the other as a handheld. Just from my experience.

Any way to download a lot of GPX files at once?

Anybody using GSAK here? That is how I do it...PQ into GSAK...send to GPS and it is all done. -
Pet Peeves as Cache Owners
AlohaBra and MaksMom replied to krymdog's topic in General geocaching topics
I can't agree with this one.....but if I find your caches, I will leave a SL-TFTC...but that is more than some folks leave. I blame it on the smart phone folks...I will admit it is hard to type a real log from my android..so I don't try....I log later from my laptop in my hotel room. -

Increase in Premium Member only caches
AlohaBra and MaksMom replied to Dave1Zippy's topic in General geocaching topics
My new caches are PM for a short while. The PM is worth it for the pocket queries...etc... The real cost of caching is gasoline, so the cost of membership is not a big factor IMHO.... -
Some newbies = bad hides
AlohaBra and MaksMom replied to geocat_'s topic in General geocaching topics
The problem is the iPhone. Android people already have a GPSr. Then they chose an Android. -

Tired of stupid logging
AlohaBra and MaksMom replied to Ash McCloud's topic in General geocaching topics
It is the smart phone. Have you ever tried typing an elaborate log in with the i-Phone? On an Android, you have "Swipe" but it sill hard to do without constantly correcting typos.... Basically, it is old school vs. newbies... -
NUVI 500 file management question
AlohaBra and MaksMom replied to Nexus-Wanderer's topic in GPS technology and devices
Normal...is this a NUVI 500? Do you use the NUVI macro? either one? If you use GSAK and the NUVI macro the data gets put into the POI folder not the GPX folder. I have never been able to change the stuff in the GPX folder myself...and I am not concerned about that. You need to Google paperless and NUVI macro... for more information. I use the pilotsnipes version.
