  1. Well, I'll have to add one from Washington State, Crazy Monkey Tripod. This one is an antenna ladder which is chained to a tree. I think the actual height is well over 50 feet at the cache location, and the logs are full of people talking about the whole thing swaying as you go. Oy!
  2. I had my hand inside a lamppost at the local home depot when the officer pulled up behind me with that typical "uh huh" look on his face. Luckily for me he had already heard of caching. We didn't find the cache until five minutes after he left. Oh well. At least I gave him the website addy. (I gotta print out some fo those informative forms...)
  3. We were returning from a handful of caches in the Cascade mountains, and emerged from a trail in an area surrounded by brush and greenery. Open, but not like a big field. We were tired, but viewing a cougar jump into the bushes to our left prompted the expected adrenaline rush. I broke out the air horn and gave kitty a few blasts from a distance as we picked up the pace. Next time I'll keep the horn on a lanyard around my neck!
  4. Okay, first off, this is brilliant. I really like the idea. I was thinking about the quandry of getting people to bring the radio back to the first stage or what have you, and realized that there might be a few options: 1) Have the first radio much closer to the second receiving radio. This way people would likely activate the second one, see it, then put it back in its case. 2) It sounds like you are pretty good with soldering and basic electronics. Good! Why not take the guts of the first radio out of its standard case and mount it in something else...that nobody would want to take. Mount it inside a waterproof metal case or something that is bolted to the first stage. Make the power and xmit buttons easy to find (obviously) but just make it less desirable or impossible to remove that first radio. Also, places like mouser.com and LEDsupply.com have a pretty big selection of LEDs, so if you wanted to use something a bit more exotic...there it is! Another place that has a great selection of LEDs is LSDiodes.com. Check out this neat multi-color unit. How would you like THAT pointing to your cache!! 5. Yesssss!!! There it is! I knew you would likely have some way of doing this. Many Thanks!
  6. Hi Clyde. Great app. I'm just getting the hang of it! I have a question. A friend of mine emailed me a gpx file he had been working with so I could see what a large file looks like in GSAK. I want to use these myself, but his caches are already marked in yellow...as found, of course. How can I reset these caches back to an unfound status? Thanks!
  7. Yeah, like it's always so nice to come around a corner and step in horse manure.
  8. Hey ed! Glad you've been so lucky! There are a lot of things that can change the accuracy of your GPS. Trees, rain, clouds, maybe even battery power. I know here near Seattle (where I am), I can get the first three of those and can be off quite a ways. Trees especially will force your GPS to sattelite-hop, which will require recalculations, and will keep me from zooming in. There will also be a difference between the accuracy reading that your GPS tells you and your actual distance from the hide. For instance, I once had a great view of the sky, my GPS read that I had accuracy to 20 feet, but was just 3 feet away from the coordinates. Confusing, to say the least. So when you do encounter this, what will you do? Let your GPS settle down when you are near the location. Stop moving and let everthing gel. If you lose signal (in the trees or something), back up and re-walk back in, noting the direction and distance. Plus, another view of Renegade's info: I know of one cache hider (no names here!!) who will mark his micros just a bit off to increase hunt times. Not sure why, but it does get one to put the unit down and open their eyes! Glad you're having fun! Me too!
  9. Yay! Thanks you guys, I appreciate all your replies! This is the kind of eductaion I was hoping for! Great information.
  10. Hello fellow WA stater! Could you post a quick pic of these...esp the sprinkler heads. Great idea!
  11. Amazing - 49 view and only 2 replies. C'mon - join in the fun! Just a quick H or V even!!!! How do you do it? And, if you want, whether you think it helps or not. Many thanks!
  12. Just curious if anybody receives better reception with their gps held vertically instead of horizontally. I have a Garmin Legend and am not having any troubles, I'm just curious how the rest of you do it. This way or this way? Thanks!
  13. Thanks gang! Some really good ideas here that will help me when the time comes along...because I know it will Outside of that, I really did get some cool pictures of the surrounding foliage. Really beautiful and green on a sunny Wa stat day! A portion of my interest in Geocaching is the ability to find some really gorgeous places. And it's nice to see I'm not alone http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=71117 Great fun!
  14. So I've hit three caches so far, two of which were 1/1's, but heavily surrounded by geomuggles. I waited an extra day before re-finding one (and brought my camera as a nifty disguise!) So when you've been "caught" with a cache, say a 30 caliber ammo can, and youre rifling through trading items: what do you say when a non-cacher approaches you and start asking questions? I mean, I want to be nice, but I don't want to give it all away! juju
  15. Excellent. I did not see that in the manual! What the??? Thank you all for the answers.
  16. Just got my new eTrex Legend. After spending just a few evenings with it, it seems like a really cool little tool! My question is this: if you are out using the device, with tracking on, etc, and the batteries fail, does all the data go away? I refer to tracks, logs, waypoints. I know: check the batteries before you leave, right? Just planning ahead..........! Thanks!
  17. Just one last plug: Trend Micro has a FREE online scan. If you are the kind of person who can remember to schedule this on a regular basis, its a good deal. http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
  18. That's the thing with Costco: each store seems to have a slight variation, even within states. There are two in my area, but they always have different stuff on the shelves! Your best bet is to call them first. For shopping, and I'm sure this is on the forum many, many times, it really depends on what you want it for. For driving and streets you'll need one thing, for lighter use, another. Figure out what you want it for first, then go shopping. I found a lot of useful stuff at http://gpsinformation.net. Reviews, info, etc. Personally, I just bought the eTrex Legend. I will use it mostly for Geocaching, but will bring it on trips so I don't get lost (true story: got lost in Switzerland a few years ago at night, on foot. Sure wish I would have had a GPS!!!) The Legend seems to do all the basics really well without breaking the bank, plus it has mapping. If I really find I need more mapping abilities, I would likley get a higher-end unit witha larger display.
