  1. I'll join in and state that I'm having the same problem with the beep on shutdown. Definitely related to the card, as it doesn't happen with the card out. I am using a brand new 2gb sdhc Sandisk. Steph2472 - did the problem go away with the new card?
  2. I keep getting wacky server errors like this (from the TB search page): Server Error in '/' Application. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Object reference not set to an instance of an object. 3. I just discovered how to do this! I have an Etrex Legend, so no memory card. But the Legend will let me delete waypoints by symbol. So I can delete the geocaches from the GPS directly. This accomplishes what I wanted, with no muss, no fuss. Thanks for your info and help.
  4. I've been using pocket queries/spinner/plucker to get stuff onto my Palm, and it works great. My problem is with the weekly updates. How do I get caches that no longer exist (arhived) out of my GPS? If I just upload the GPX into my GPS, it adds new caches, but the old ones stay there. This is my biggest problem with managing waypoints. I have tried making a set of waypoints I want to keep (everything but geocaches), then deleting all waypoints in the GPS, and uploading my pocket query plus the other set of "keepers". In order for this to work though, I have to make sure I add any new waypoints other than geocaches that I want to keep to my special set. Obviously, this is very time-consuming and error-prone. Anybody have an elegant solution to this problem? Thanks!
  5. Doh. Thanks. I just needed to look harder. I was trying to do this late last night in a hurry.
  6. Is there software out there that allows you to change the icon for a bunch of waypoints at once? I have a number of waypoints for various things besides geocaches in my GPS, but somewhere in the process of transferring them between different programs, they all show the geocache icon now. I would like to be able to select a group of waypoints from my list and change them all to a particular icon. There are way too many to do them each one at a time. I think I have actually done this before, but none of the software I have seems able to do it. I have GSAK, Mapsource, and EasyGPS. Thanks!
  7. Why six? The "essentials" vary depending on the cache. A drive-up cache requires very different preparation than a cache on top of a mountain. The Mountaineers have identified the Ten Essentials for any hike: 1) Map 2) Compass 3) Sunglasses & Sunscreen 4) Extra Food 5) Extra Clothing 6) Headlamp/Flashlight 7) First-aid supplies 8) Fire Starter 9) Matches 10) Knife I (try to) bring these on any hike where I am going to be more than 10 minutes away from the car. Obviously, you have to make your own adjustments based on the conditions. The most important thing is to know what you are getting into and be appropriately prepared.
  8. Do you mean you are having trouble physically connecting the cable? Some newer computers (laptops anyway) don't have serial ports, and the cable that came with your Legend is serial only. If this is your problem, you'll need a USB-to-serial cable. I did a quick search and found this link to a place that sells them.
  9. I noticed the same thing with a benchmark file downloaded from ExpertGPS. It is what InspGadget says: they are showing the helicopter pads at the hospitals. If you can strip out all the "airports", you will see the hospitals. Personally, I stripped out everything but the hospitals, and loaded them on my Legend, since I didn't have room for everything, and I thought having hospitals might potentially be useful.
  10. Thanks for the info everybody! Now I just need to get the ok from the boss
  11. I'm thinking about getting Mapsource Topo, and have a question about how it works. When uploading data to the GPSr, how do you select what to upload? Can you draw a box around the area you want to upload, and select what types of info you want included? I have a Legend, which has limited memory, so I am also curious about how big of an area I can get into the unit. Thanks!
  12. Wow, thanks you guys! I should have realized that it was NONOU, (and that I was misspelling the name of the place ) What I found was indeed reference marker two for TU1943. It sounds like the actual benchmark was under the monument at the top of the mountain: The data sheet for the benchmark says TU1943''STATION MARK IS AN UNSTAMPED, U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY DISK, SET TU1943''IN CONCRETE 6 INCHES BENEATH THE 6-FOOT-SQUARE, CONCRETE FLOOR, TU1943''(FLUSH WITH GROUND) OF THE TYPE B-1 SIGNAL WHICH WAS BUILT BY THE TU1943''HAWAII TERRITORIAL SURVEY IN 1930. ACCESS TO THE MARK IS HAD TU1943''THROUGH A SMALL HAND-TUNNEL PASSING BENEATH THE CENTER, CONCRETE TU1943''PEDESTAL OF THE SIGNAL. I looked inside the pipe at the top of the pedestal, and there was a length of chain stuffed into it, which was attached at the bottom. Do you think I should claim this as a find? It looks like others have claimed the RM as the find.
  13. I found this mark while doing a geocache on Kauai. It is at the summit of Nounou (Sleeping Giant) Mountain. I am a newbie to benchmarking so bear with me please I know that it is a reference marker for a benchmark, but how can I look up that benchmark? The writing on the mark says 2 NONOI 1927. It is a reference marker by the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey. I tried to find it using the NGS web site, but was unsuccessful. Any ideas? I am really interested in learning more about benchmarking. Thanks!
  14. I have a new Legend, and I have had the same problem you described with the Navigation screen. (I.e. the course arrow doesn't update properly-it starts out ponting in the right direction, but doesn't change as you walk past the waypoint.) I found that if I redo the goto (find the waypoint again, then click "goto") it will point in the right direction. However, I have also found that it is much easier to just use the Map screen at all times.
  15. The panel I'm using is the Brunton Solarport 2.2. I is fairly small - about 7"x8" when open. It has various plugs for output. The easiest method I could find to connect it to my Venture was to buy the car adapter for the venture, and use the female car socket on the Brunton.
  16. Does anyone know if there is a way with the Etrex Legend to disable the auto power off feature when the external power source is disconnected? I am using a mini solar panel to power the GPS, and when the sun goes behind a cloud, the power drops out. The unit then pops up a window that says something like "Auto power off in 30 seconds - press any button to cancel". I would rather that the unit just ignore that the power has gone out, and use that battery, because if I'm not watching, it will power off when I don't want it to. I couldn't find anything in the manual or by pushing buttons on the unit, but it seems like it should be an option. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
  17. I've been using camelbak bladders for years, and never had any problems or funny taste. I had an early platypus many years ago, and it developed cracks - but they've probably fixed that by now. I don't especially like the camelbak packs: I think they cost more than they're worth. You can find any number of packs with hydration sleves, and buy a camelbak bladder to put in it. I have a DaKine ski pack that I use in the winter with a camelbak fitted with a tube insulator. The biggest problem I've had is mold growing in the tube. If you use it often enough, it doesn't grow, but if you use it only once a week or so, it does. It would probably be worth while to get one of those special brushes to clean the tube with. Diluted bleach will kill it off for a while, but it usually comes back.
