  1. There is alread a category called Volcano Watching, how does this one differ from it?
  2. Canadian Benchmarks hits 100! Only several million to go.
  3. I convinced myself to coordinate this great CITO event idea. Original idea came from QuigleyJones. Thanks for the idea. We're going to put on a great CITO event sometime in September. For more details visit the link in the post above.
  4. When is the Earthcache category going to be opened to the public to allow group members and officers? I can't find a way to even join the group.
  5. On MyPage in the section My Favorites all the categories show 0 waymarks. But all the waymark categories do have waymarks. Perhaps the same issue as reported before. It seemed to start about a week ago.
  6. No problem, I was a bit surprised that it was rejected so quickly because it was the first time that anyone other than myself had approved or declined a waymark in the category. I trust your judgement though, although mistaken that time. There were no specific guidelines given to officers on how and when they should approve/decline. Given the current setup of group management, of course it is open for any officer to perform any appropriate function needed in the category. Group management was not setup to allow a leader to have special privelages. If it were setup to give the leader special privelages I would recomment allowing them some leeway on the approve/decline decisions for the first 48 hours.
  7. When I set up my category (actually I was asked to manage it after complaining enough) there was no group management and I expected to manage it on my own. Now that Group Management has been created I am forced to share the duties. I know there are good reasons for Group Management (ie. owner not available to perform their duties and even the sharing of opinions to make a better category) but to date for my Canadian Benchmark category I have approved all but one of the waymarks (somehow Black Dog Trackers beat me to one) and done so within 48 hours on all of them for the last 7 months and many within one hour. Also to date none of my other officers or members have contributed much. So, so far it really hasn't been Group Management although it is called that. Perhaps some people are hesitant to speak up since I got the category started and it's doing pretty well number wise. However, I do continue to ask for input on the category. I can understand the smaller categories can be quite easily be managed by one individual while larger categories can be quite time consuming for individual to keep up with. Group Management seems like a necessity in the long run as even the most diligent category owner will have periods that they are unavailable (even I take a vacation sometimes) at times. But I don't agree with giving up complete control. I like Jake39's suggestions as a way to manage. The leader gets first crack at approving/denying for a set period of time like 6 to 48 hours which maybe the leader could even set so that if they can't keep up then one of the officers can jump in.
  8. They should make the category visible if they want to attract waymarkers. Or is there a super premium group that only has access?
  9. It's time for peer review. I think you will find this is an exciting category. If you like the idea please provide comments for peer review.
  10. There is no multi-select option at this time. You can accomplish what you want now by using checkboxes though it isn't the optimal solution. Thanks, I'll set it up as 8 check boxes. It would be nice if it could be done by selecting multiple radio buttons though.
  11. We have enough volunteers now but join anyway for an explosive experience. Check out link above for current status.
  12. Is there a help section describing how each variable type works? I can't find anything. I want to create a variable with 8 selections but the user can pick as many of them as they want. Do any of the existing variable types allow this?
  13. Awesome looking coins! Go check out the link to see the fabulous designs available.
  14. If that's the case, then what about uploading the Canadian Benchmark database to the category. I sent several e-mails regarding this and got no reply. I would like to see the category set up much like the US version at geocaching.com.
  15. With the growth of Recovered U.S. Benchmarks you will exceed even 1000 before long. Why are they imposing any limit at all? (My goal is to maintain at least 1 Canadian Benchmark for each 10 U.S., so far I'm keeping up.)
  16. Thanks Hard Oiler for replying before I could. Indeed the Canadian Benchmark detail page has a number of links to Canadian databases. The MASCOT database has many thousands of benchmarks just in the lower mainland. Far outnumbering the number of caches in the same area. You could look for years before finding them all. If there are any other database links that you think I should add to the Category page please let me know.
  17. Due to popular demand I have started the Volcano Watchers Group Please enroll if you wish to be part of a group that lists fascinating worldwide locations where you can watch live volcanos.
  18. I guess you all believe that the current categories of "Mountain Summits", "Waterfalls", "Caves", "Natural Arches", "Hot Springs", and "Glaciers" should all be voted down in favour of one big "Earthcache" Category. I for one, believe that Earthcaches were started to educate the public about interesting and important geoscientific phenomena around the world. I am one of the biggest supporters of it in fact just check my stats. However, there are many things that interest people about our natural world that do not require a science lesson for them to be listed here. Case in point, not every waterfall fits the criteria of an Earthcache. Yet that should not stop us from having a waterfall category for people that want to see waterfalls that may have a certain beauty but little to offer scientifically. Then in the case of Tidal Places, one could list the Bay of Fundy and certain features around it as true Earthcaches due to the scientific lesson that can be learned from such a unique place. However, where will you put a fairly common place like Boundary Bay which has a kilometer of mud/sand flats where you can watch the tide come in because you see the water slowly seeping along the ground and you can watch the kids play in the shallow warm water heated by the sun baked sand. This is also seen at Spanish Banks and Qualicum Beach. This is just in my local area and certainly there are thousands more examples of these around the world but they don't exactly scream "Earthcache" to me. On top of that there are places where tidal bores exist, tidal rapids, interesting tidal influenced lakes like Pitt Lake here, and the effects on Rivers near the Ocean. Perhaps 1 or 2 of the really unique ones fit into the Earthcache category but the thousands of other ones have no place to go which is why I propose the Tidal Places Category. This is also why I support the Glacier Category with the first listed glacier and I believe the other aforementioned categories are justtified as well. Come join the Tide Watchers Group
  19. I have started a group called Tide Watchers. If you wish to join please visit Tide Watchers Group This should definitely be a category that stands on its own. The popular Earthcache category is too restrictive and focuses too much on the geoscience behind it all. Some people just want cool places to visit.
  20. Time to bring this one back. Places to watch tidal movements. But significant in some way such as tidal bores, extreme tidal ranges, speed of flow, etc.
  21. We're under group management now and we have 58 waymarks created. 100 is just around the corner.
  22. Has this one been created yet? Sounds like a good category. What will the criteria be? Must the tree be one of the ten tallest or broadest in its species or something like that.
  23. Interesting idea but a little more information would be helpful. There is certainly potential for overlap but of course that can happen with almost any category. Odd geological features could be the category but give it some more description. Like why would fall in this category instead of Earthcaches.
  24. Wow, I forgot I suggested this one way back in September. I see it's been brought back to life. This is a really "COOL" category.
