  1. May I tell you of my (well ,actually my Other Half's ) amazing head torch? It is a bikelight, which comes with a headstrap. It is called "Ay up" and is Austrailian (as is OH). The light it emits has been likened to that of the Police Helicopter. The thing not to do ,is to get back into car after sucessful "darkness caching "and look in rearview mirror with head torch still on!
  2. We were doing a local trail for the second time today (because it is really nice and we had a new geocacher with us ) and the iphone played up.My daughter thought we were at the spot of a cache and her friend found one!It wasnt part of the trail,it was part of a multi (which I dont do becuase I am rubbish at solving puzzles etc) so got a "free " smiley for that! Well, what a great way to introduce a new cacher!
  3. Hi Guys and Delta 68 in particular!! wow ,I am so excited! but ( and please excuse me if I appear somewhat dim ) when I go to download it it says "application not compatible .This application requires the iPhone 4.0 software update" HOw do I get the software update?do I have to synch it through itunes on a cable via a laptop/Mac ? I am capable of doing that but I cannot find the upgrade in the itunes store. Or does it jsut mean I have to spend a small fortune to buy a new square iphone4 ?? Any advice is most appreciated.
  4. 16334.7 km this was Fraser Island Coloured Sands earthcache FTF and also Fraser Island Lake Mckenzie earthcachte FTF We were in Australia on holiday (18daysummervacation for me ,37daysummervacation for the girls, lucky things!) and took a daytrip to the most fantastic location I have ever been to .No,honestly,I am not exaggerating. As luck would have it,the two earthcaches were published reently and noone had logged them.
  5. We always log our DNFs. They can be just as enjoyable as the caches we do find. If the location is nice , there is an adventure or just a bit infuriating then the search is reward in its own right. The most times it took me to find a cache was 5,and then my other half found it!I logged / admitted to all the DNFs.I love a FTF but not competetive in my "numbers". What is so great about geocaching is that it can be pursued in so many different ways.
  6. Does this mean my family will be safe to eat the wild mushrooms I pick from now on?
  7. A "party " of cachers as in "Tupperware ". I am not old enought to remember them ,but my mother is
  8. OOPS! No idea how this got doubleposted ,not sure how to remove.Sorry ALso,found an i pad thread on the general forums, but they are almost exclusively USA cachers, would be fun to hear what UK cachers think. Cheerio for now
  9. Well, the household had not had a new toy recently ,this was a situation which needed to be rectified. My OH suggested we get a Garmin Dakota/Colorado fancy GPS and I thought it is more fun to continue using my I phone becasue of the challenge it poses. When I cannot find a cache I have placed myself he helps me out with his Garmin Edge bike GPS (" 'edgehog) So, we got him an i pad ,becasue when eyesight is failing due to too many birhtdays, they are really rather cool, everything can be made REALLY BIG! We discovered it has GPS in it. So ,does anyone geocache with an i pad? it is big, probably not very accurate, quite fragile but OOOH so cool. Please discuss.
  10. You publish it as an event cache, just like a regular Geocache, cachers get notified about it via the normal cache notifications. All you need is an accessible space, which is open to all cachers and doesn't require the payment of a fee, nothing else is required. Many (probably most) events are held in pubs, many are also held in public parks. If you've got any kind of accessible area in/adjoining/close to the museum then that would be fine. E.G. See this event cache to paraphrase a quote "If you publish it, they will come" Edit to add: Caches which are seen as publicising or pushing an agenda can be frowned upon, so whereas you could hold an event at the museum, and say on the event page "this is being held at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum" that would probably be OK, but if you say something like "this is being held to publicise the new Egypt Exhibition at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum" that would probably not; a quick chat with your friendly local reviewer should quickly find a form of words which is acceptable to both you and Groundspeak.
  11. Hi drsolly, Have your big toenails fallen off yet? You might find that the pressure on your toes form the boots might cuase them to die and fall off.DOnt worry, new ones will grow underneath, dont be tempted to pull the dead ones off becasue the new ones will be soft and feeble if they come off too soon. I do not wish to come across as a " know it all " but I am a GP and it is amazing what agony people suffer with their poor feet. What we find the most effective for plantar fasciitis is the frozen golfball stretch every morning and night to lengthen the ligaments .Shoe wear ca help a lot, orthotics ( specail insoles) or the "ugliest shoes in the world " MBTS (amazingly wonderful ,no I dont get comission, but i never wear anything else (my ex-marathon running feet have no metatrsal fatpads left (the fat moved to my midriff instead) ) and now the "medical crocs" are also really good for plantar fasciitis. Does anyone think we should have an "ask the doc " thread? I'd be pretty scared though ,since some geocachers on this forum can get rather more witty /sarcastic /knowledgable than I might cope with.(Actaully ,I am sure there are stacks of medical geocachers, now, that is an idea, maybe we could have a thread with different specialities? Apart form the fact that we all geocache to get away form work ,but then medicine is a vocation and we never avoid an opportunity to help our fellow humans . I shall stop rambling now and have something to eat. Cheerio for now
  12. Hi ! Many years ago when I ws a GP in East London I was asked to take part in a Radio 4 programme. It was awsome and the best part was the sound effects! I could not belive the effort the recording guys went to to get the sounds just right. Now I am more in the demographics for a Radio 4 listener and it is really lovely to know the care that is taken in producing the programmes. Good luck with the programme.
  13. Hi Guys! I know this is slightly off topic and maybe more light hearted than some posts. Last week was school half term. We had 11 teenage girls camping in our backgarden and I constructed a night time "geocache" trail. Halfords reflective tape £3.99 for 150 cm,cut into 1cm squares, two hles punched with hole punch, oldfashioned string through holes and tied round trees/posts etc. The goodie boxes (large) were put into Ikea dogpoo bags(black) with a 1*1 cm reflective piece of tape on.The ADSA glowsticks for £1.50 were very well recieved (and made it easier to see where all the girls were!) Every marker and box were collected by yours truly walking at the end of the group. 3 cows who had been asleep must have thought we were aliens but soon went back to sleep. A great time was had by all and no trees were harmed. Do you think a temporary thing like this might be an idea for a Haloween event cache? If so ,I migth just do it( and hopefully not walking the trail twice with a recently broken toe like last week) (No vested interest in above tradenames)
  14. Hi! When I try to log int othe goechat it says"erroneous nickname" should I use my caching name or something shorter(not 20 characters?)
  15. This isnt advertising but I wear no other shoes than MBT (Massei Barefoot Technology) Sandals for all weahter other than snow (when I have a pair of MBT trainers)no socks.Feet are easy to wash and what is a bit of mud? Stinging nettle whelts done last that long either. The sandals and trainers are good as new after a gently cycle in the washing machine. MBTs are not pretty, they have a thick concave sole so you "rock " along in a very orthopaedically sound fashion. They are fantastic for worn out metatarsal fatpads( I am an ex londistance runner(used to train barefoot in my teens) and if anyone suffers from plantar fasciitis they fix that too. They are great for embarrasing teenage daughters with as well! MBTs Rock!
  16. Hi , we live in Balsall and could possibly maintain a couple. Only problem is I havent actually found any of them! Maybe if you think of some nonthreatening locations ( some of Cov is a bit rough and I am mostly a lone lady cacher) and I could go and find them and then I would come back to you? Best Regards
  17. I would sincerely recommend an i phone. the GPS isnt bad,the application is great and works even when the server is down. You can post immediate filednotes(great for FTF so other people dont break their necks/crash their cars in the rush for FTF.Takes nice pictures . You can also have the grooviest applications in the world (eg dosing of warfarin (medically used ratposion ) and recognizing any modern tune it is made to listen to amongst severla thousand must have apps. If I cannot find a cache I dont blame my i phone,I blame myself for not being smart enough. oh,and apparently it works as a phone too!
  18. Merry Christmas to all of you! Thank you for all your shaggy dog stories. Lovely walk today,a few small frozen ponds for the dogs to skate on. They didnt seem to mind breaking the ice and falling through but one was cow slurry so we had proper smelly companions.
  19. Oops! Warwickshire is pretty big Solihull but with a Coventry postcode and close to our currently disabled cache "sunny as" hopefully that is a bit more helpful Cheerio for now
  20. Hi Guys, I recently read a very funny log where a local cacher said he would have felt much less conspicious when he was cache hunting if he had had a dog to walk. Well, my two fantastic Chochlate Labradors would happily go caching during the week. My partner and I both work fulltime. Our Nanny and the super cool teenagers throw leftover foods to the dogs and use them as footwarmers when watching TV but sadly don't do dogwalks. The dogs come back when called and will respond well to firm handling(initially pull at the lead when excited) They are totally good natured overgrown 3 year old puppies. They do not get car sick and dont winge when travelling. I have trained them to remember coordinates of caches found with a greater accuracy then my i -phone.Thus, any caches you find with them they will then lead me to ! Looking forward to hearing from trustworthy dog-less cachers. P.S . as yet they do not have their own geocaching.com accounts, that could be easily fixed.
  21. I bought an I phone a couple of weeks ago and have so far only tired it twice for mini geocaches and found neither. However,I then thought maybe Wherigo may be easier and there is one locally (Brueton park,Solihull,England) Sadly now I cannot download Wherigo player. Most of these posts in this thread are a year old, does anyone know of any developements since to get round this problem?
