Careful with the 'quick charger' as many of them will shorten the life of your batteries. A conditioning charger is your best choice...check out LaCrosse. In many cases the charger is actually more important than the batteries (as long as you're using quality batteries). +1 Quick charging can also cause the batteries to get hot. Plan ahead and charge your batteries over night. If you can get a charger that has an automatic trickle charge feature would be ideal as to not over charge the batteries. Also some of the lower quality rechargeables have a high discharge or leakage rate (can't remember what it's called). Meaning if not on a charger/trickle charge they will lose they're charge over time. Does the LaCrosse charge NiZN batteries?

Whew! Okay, I downloaded files from GPSFileDepot for Colorado. When I opened the files I had a number of .img files such as 8001100.img, 8001102.img and so on. I put these in the C drive under Garmin/ Colorado. So... how do I get them to my 62s? I can use the usb cable to open the Garmin files. Then what? Help Also, is mapsource supposed to be loaded with the Garmin GPS?

I am self taught in word processors, spreadsheets, CAD, photo editing and the like. So now I get involved with geocaching and I have a whole new language to learn. gmapsupp.img , MapSource, BaseCamp etc:) I'm having fun slogging around in this new enviorment but whew! I hope all of the information puzzles I am looking at find a place in my cranium.

I'm thinking of using rechargeable batteries in my new 62s. Is NICAD my only option or is there something better (lasts longer, etc.).

I see you can purchase maps on data cards. Can I download free maps to the data card on my computer and then put the card in my 62s? If not what is the procedure?

I'm new to this and have just purchased a 62s. I don't know what you are asking but if you mean to stop tracking to a geocache try this: push the find key and scroll to the "Stop Navigation" button and push "Enter. If you want to clear your map of tracks go to the main menu and scroll to "Track Manager" push enter and with "Current track highlighted push "Menu" and with "Delete All" highlighted push enter and follow prompts.

When you say "if you have TOPO installed ..." What is the TOPO you are referring to?

I am camping here in Colorado and have found a couple of caches. My problem: on my 62s the compass pointer points to the destination and gives me an as the crow flies distance. The preloaded map just shows the destination and maybe some roads. Are there any maps I could load that would give turn by turn directions. That would be turn by turn on streets or named forest roads. I'm sure the principles and maps for other Garmin GPS's would be the same so please, anyone chime in. I would like free maps but will pay if necessary to get a good map or maps.

CxCP, I just purchased a 62s five days ago. The manual is in the unit. Hook to your computer and go there thru windows explorer. I saved a copy of the PDF file on my computer, printed a hard copy and saved a copy to the flash drive. I'm sure you will not need it much considering your upgrade.

I havent seen one but I have always thought it would be funny to post "DRY PAINT" signs in a building to see who would touch the walls.

I just received the GPSMAPS 62s. You had better know something about GPS's because the only yhing that comes with the 62s is a quick start guide. There is no manual available even online. Now to figure out how to download maps and such.

Gmap 62s

I have an older version (6.0) of Topo USA. I have not used it much since purchase in 2007. What are your opinions of this program? Should I upgrade to the new Topo USA version or do you reccomend some other like program. Any advise and evaluation appreciated. I will be using this program for geocaching and hiking.

I realize a gps will only get you to within X number of feet of the true coordinates, but if I make a waypoint and later that day or that week, return to that position will my gps show that exact location? Just curious.

Okay, I have ordered the 62s. I'm sure when I get it I'll have more questions and maybe know on which heading to post them. Thanks for the input.

I am looking to upgrade my old Garmin 12XL. I am looking at the gpsmap 62s and 62st. I think the 60csx might work for me getting started in geocaching but my concern is because of its age will Garmin quit supporting it as they have my 12XL. I can afford $400 plus. In looking at the 62s and 62st I note the 62st has built in maps but less memory and costs $100+ more. I am assuming the built in maps account for the differance. Am I right? Would I be better off with the 62s and purchasing maps or going for the 62st? Any advise appreciated.
