  1. IceZebra, thank you so much. I was able to hit the GPX file and 'save as' in my Garmin Etrex20 one by one. Now the ones that I want for our camping trip in Indian River are all in there. It's a little more work than the old way that it used to be when you could just hit the "send to my gps" but at least I got it done. Thanks again
  2. Hi, I just bought a new gpsr after taking a break from geocaching for a couple years. I had trouble downloading so I thought it was my gps, come to find out, not so. OK, so I went through the new procedure of getting the premium membership, putting my desired geocaches in a list, sending it to my Garmin Express app and then download from there. Problem is, they are not in my geocache file on my etrex20. It says, "No Geocaches". What the heck? So I tried to do it again and Garmin Express tells me "you're all up to date". So garmin express thinks I have the geocaches but I don't!!! We're going up north in 5 days so I'm worried if I send an email to Garmin, I probably wouldn't get an answer in time. Can anybody help me with this?
  3. Too much trouble? It takes literally one extra mouse click to drop a geocoin when you are logging a find! I didn't mean about putting it in the inventory! I was really responding to the other guy who said I better take off the tracking number or all kinds of awful things will happen and also something about making a note and deleting the log (?). I guess once I log it as being dropped when I do, I will understand what HE was talking about. Regarding the part about people will steal your coin # and "drop it in caches all over the world"....WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE??!! It never ceases to amaze me the ways in which people can be <e*pletive removed by moderat*r>.
  4. First, I would STRONGLY suggest that you edit the tracking # out of your post. There are people that will use that to bounce your coin all over the world without ever laying eyes on it. To drop your newly registered coin into a cache that you just found, when you create your Found It log, your coin will show up in your Inventory (click the inventory link on the log page) If you dropped it into a cache that you previously found, or that you own, you can do the same thing, except use a simple Note type log. You can then delete the log afterward and your coin will stay in the cache's inventory. Note that the moderators will almost certainly be moving this to the Travel Bug forum cripe.....seems like too much trouble altogether. Think I'll just keep it
  5. OK, I have read all pages supplied by the website and I'm still confused about how to log a geocoin. I bought one myself, I have activated it and set it up . We are going on a geocaching trip to KY this week and I plan to drop it in a cache. I am confused as to how to get the actual cache log to say that it has a trackable in it once I drop it. Thanks for any help. Kathy
  6. oooh, I would have done this one in a heartbeat. Too bad I live 2,000 miles away. I would have just gone to the parking coordinates to see if those pictures made any more sense.
  7. I did a multi cache a few weeks ago that started in a nice piece of woods near the Henry Ford Estate in Dearborn. The next stop, I couldn't believe it, was in a really bad part of town on the side of a busy road, looking for a micro amongst the trash on the side of the road. Needless to say, I was pissed!!! I had emailed the owner the night before to make sure that the recent rains would not be a problem as it often is here in southeastern Michigan and he gave me his phone number in case I had any problem. Well, I let him know that spending two minutes on the side of a busy road in a BAD part of town with yikky muggles walking all over the place was not my idea of enjoyable geocaching. What a jerk!
  8. We just recently started caching and we prefer the ones that require a hike in the woods. (No P&G's!) We take our 10 year old Cocker Spaniel along with us and she has just really really surprised me with her agility and endurance! She finds all the best ways to get around fallen trees and brush that poses any obstacle. I thought she would tire out and we'd have to carry her but that hasn't been the case. She really seems to love it and has lost some extra weight.
  9. Yeah, you're right that is a nice brochure. How do we get them?? I hesitate to use all that expensive color ink on my home printer for each one. Can you order like 10 or 20 of them preprinted?
  10. Welcome from another newbie! I also bought the Garmin Etrex Vista HCx. Love it! One word of advice though... I got lost in the woods in a state park and realized that my compass wasn't working. You have to calibrate it by turning in circles very slowly a few times. I'm sure the directions will tell you how to do that. I think it's on the first menu options. Oh yeah, and whenever you park your car before you go out caching, set your parking spot as a waypoint!!! Kathy in Livonia, MI
  11. I have to agree with this. I live in a suburban environment. There are like 300 caches within 10 miles of my house. I honestly don't think it would be possible to find someplace to hide a new one that would adhere to all the guidlines. Any farther than that and it would be harder for me to maintain the cache properly. I'm just going to hunt for them, not hide them.
  12. I have found your second suggestion to be much easier. You have to keep refreshing the map as you move it around but that's not a problem.
  13. I think I just peed myself!! Oh crap! I meant that reply for the one about squeezing the extra P out of the hamsters! Sorry
  14. Exactly what I do. The last cache, my husband was so glued to the GPS when we were in the vicinity that I found it because it was 20 feet away from where my husband kept saying, "It's supposed to be right here!"
  15. Define what you think of as "really decent swag" please.... Well, I have a brand new combo lock, packs of batteries, a Mozart CD, a lens cleaning kit and a couple of compasses that you can put on your zipper. OK well that makes sense! That's good swag indeed. I gotta tell you - and don't think this is a slam - I am kinda struck that you've found 4 caches and you're ragging on the swag. I have only hidden 7 caches but what I've done is this. For the FTF I leave something like what you think of as "nice" - usually a pack of batteries. They always seem to be very appreciated. And I do have a multiple cache that I stock with "sort of nice" - a pack of Superman playing cards - nice Sharpies - and there is some "kids" stuff in there, too. But the other ones I don't put "nice" stuff in after the FTF because, as so many have said here already, trade up doesn't happen so much with urban and all of mine are urban. I can tell you that if there is room for swag I do almost always trade but I generally go for the stupid stuff. I found a cache recently that had cool stuff in it but I didn't take any of it. I just took the little yellow smiley face bouncy ball. I take stuff like that because it's just fun. I put it all in a zip-lock bag and it's fun to remember the caches. "Oh yeah - the rubber reindeer head! That was a funny cache." "Remember that green spider cache? Thought I'd never find that one." But I can say you juuuuuust never know. Recently I was out with Harusee and we came across a cache with a Barnes & Noble gift card in it. I figured - eh - it's trash. Harusee took it. It turned out to have $90 on it. After that I hated him. I know...it's sounds petty. And really, I'm not out doing this because I think I'm going to find something awesome. I'm out getting some exercise, getting my dog some exercise and enjoying the challenge. I'm just saying, I went crazy searching through my house for good stuff to trade but after seeing the caches, I realize that it is human nature to take and not to reciprocate in kind. Just sad, that's all. I will continue to carry the swag with me and leave something based on how great I thought the hide was. If I get lucky and get a winning lottery ticket, well, that will be frosting. Thanks for letting me vent! Happy caching!
  16. Hi, I just recently found out about geocaching while looking on the internet for things to do while we take a trip to Kentucky this summer. The whole idea just sounded so unbelievably fun that I immediately cashed in some points from my credit card for Amazon dollars to buy a GPS. I am addicted. When I am at work, I look out my window and wish I could come up with a great excuse to leave so I can go find a cache. As we both work full time and try to go to the gym four or five times a week, we can only cache on Saturdays (Gotta do some housework and yard work and figure Sunday is the only time left now). Really can't wait to get to Kentucky in July. There will be really great hikes and beautiful scenery to enjoy while geocaching. I won't be able to rack up thousands of finds like some people have but I look forward to Saturdays now more than ever! Kathy and Darryl
  17. You can post a note if you like, but good luck on people complying. There is an old saying; "One man's junk is another man's treasure." - unknown. I guess you could turn that around to, "One man's treasure is another man's junk." My first three hides, I tried to place, what I thought, were useful items. For instance screwdriver sets that people could leave in their car in case of an emergency or even use around the home. Both of these were swapped out for an NBA team nerf ball. I rarely swap swag any more. I sign the log and move on. But occasionally I'll leave a lottery ticket for the person who finds that cache after me. It doesn't cost me a lot, but it could be worth a lot. It might be wise to keep some decent swag with you. Who knows when you might come across a great find in a cache. Like the Spitfire flashlight I got for being the FTF. Lottery tickets are a good idea! The next cacher might possibly get a very nice thing for little cost to myself.
  18. I'm sorry. Forgive me for being a newbie. What are P&G's???

  20. I know, truthfully, like I said, I'm not humpin' my butt through the woods to find treasure. It just seems like there shouldn't even be such a thing as trading swag if that's what it all ends up as. I think if I do one, it will just have a logbook and a nice prize for first, second and third to find.
  21. We have only found four since getting the GPS last weekend. In all four cases, in spite of the owner having mentioned good swag, it's alway full of old Happy Meal toys and just worthless junk. It's not like I'm in this for real treasure but its kinda anti-climatic when I've brought along some really decent swag for trade and the whole thing is full of the junk you clean out of the bottom of your kids toybox once a year or so. I think it's wonderful for parents to bring their kids along on geocache hunts but why let them put that stuff in there? I was thinking about places to hide a cache. Is it proper to put a note to please do not put worthless junk into it? Kathy
