  1. Yes, something like that. I had initially thought of the x in the centre being the compass points, but that does look nice as well.
  2. I had wanted to do it myself, but I did come across the topic you are referring to, and have requested one be made. I am looking for an amalgamation of the geocaching G logo and a compass rose, perhaps with the geocaching colours and my username or initials.
  3. If the offer is still on the table, I would love a new, unique avatar (ie. not swiped from some random website). I would like the avatar to be a melding of the rough G geocaching logo (similar to the one seen here with a compass rose, perhaps with some geocaching logo colours and my username initials (GK). Any suggestions? I am more than willing to wait. As well, any other ideas would be appreciated.
  4. I was curious as to what computer program you use to create your avatars? I have an idea for one, but it requires me to superimpose two separate images over top of one another, and I have no artistic abilities to be able to hand draw it. Any suggestions
  5. While not the Legend, I do use an Etrex Summit, which, from my understanding, is about the same GPSr wise, but has a few more features (barometer, internal compass, etc). I quite enjoy it, and the only negative thing I can say about it is that it is not geocaching friendly, and does not have the joystick (manual inputting is a pain in the deriere). Otherwise, the Etrex series is a pretty good one, and from what I have seen, seems to be the first GPSr that many people had.
  6. I just have a question regarding the Topic Subscription Reply Notification emails that are sent out when there is a new reply on a topic. I have no issue with it, and I know how to turn it off, but I have an issue when I get 42 emails regarding the same topic. Sure, they are replies from 42 different people, but do I really need 42 notices? The funny part is that at the bottom of each email, it says "There may be more replies to this topic, but only 1 email is sent per board visit for each subscribed topic. This is to limit the amount of mail that is sent to your inbox." What gives?
  7. I find that many people respond in forums the same as they would respond in person, but I think it is important to note that when an individual sends a response through written word as opposed to spoken, a large part of the subtle nuances are lost. The reader may not realize that what you have posted is mean as a joke, since they cannot read your body language or hear the tone of your voice, facial expressions, etc. They may also not be aware of your personal style of humour, which, when read, appears to be harsh, insulting bitter and angry. I myself have been guilty of that in the past, and it can be hard to get across that what you have said is a joke to be taken lightly, not a harsh bashing of an individual's intelligence, experience, opinions, etc...
  8. It sounds like those were additional waypoints (Reference and Parking co-ords) rather than caches.... ? ...And that makes sense. I looked again at the cache page, and there were both reference and parking co-ordinates. Thanks for the quick reply!
  9. I downloaded a number of caches into my eTrex Summit yesterday for a trip to my sister-in-laws place. I used the PC interface cable for the transfer. When I got there, I fired up the GPSr and looked for the nearest caches. Then I noticed that the nearest caches had prefixes of RR and PK, instead of the standard GC. What happened? I looked at the pages when I returned home, and they are all numbered with GC. I tried to enter them into the GC Code search on the main page, and was told that the "Geocache Code not found". Am I missing something? (Edited for clarity)
  10. Yup, good reason why when I eventually quit, cigarettes will still be a friend. One needs to be cautious when using this method, since heating the tick can cause it to regurgitate its stomach contents back into you, insuring that any infections the tick was carrying is now in you... It takes a tick about 24 hours to transmit Lyme disease into you once attached, but if it has any mouth parts into you and you heat it, then you now have Lyme disease regardless of how long it has been attached....
  11. What I am planning on is making clay faces, about 3 cm across or so and maybe a centimetre thick. What is a good way to determine if the clay is good to work with?
  12. That would be pretty cool, but I don't have the room to put full length tracking numbers... Besides, that goes against the whole free part Does anyone host a free trackables website?
  13. While out on a geology field trip, I discovered an outcrop that contains a great deal of clay. I have been thinking of ideas to create unique yet inexpensive (read "free") signature items, so I thought clay items might be a nice idea (I have a prototype design drying in the garage before I attempt to fire it in my fire pit). What I am wondering is if there is a way that I can make each signature item trackable? I can carve my initials into the back along with a number so as to identify them. I am not interested in where it travels to, since it is my understanding that signature items are usually picked up and kept, but it would be nice to know who has which one. Any ideas?
  14. Laptops, as well as just about all electronics contain various amounts of toxic materials, including lead, mercury and copper. These metals can leach into the soils, ground water or surface water causing toxins to build up in the bodies of the animals that call these places home. These then work their way up the food chain until it reaches your dinner table. I would recommend against it unless you entirely gut the computer (including the battery!)
  15. I have a peanut butter container with camouflage fabric glued on that I have recently put out as a replacement for a container that was falling apart. Thus far, it seems to be holding out well, though it is somewhat protected. It survived the insane rain that we had in Southern Ontario a week ago or so. I think one of the key concerns with peanut butter containers is the residual odour that may have permeated the plastic. This one has been run through the dishwasher, rinsed with bleach and soaked with a baking soda solution for 2 days or so to remove the odour.
  16. While I have never used a machete for geocaching, I have used them on a number of occasions for camping and extended hikes. Depending on the type you buy, they can be lighter than an axe or hatchet, and almost as useful for splitting wood for fires. Like everything else in this world, you need to know how to use it properly for it to be useful and efficient...
  17. I have the same issue as you, in that I have an older GPSr and a newer computer. If you don't want to wait for shipping, and depending on where you are, I have seen the serial to USB cables at The Source for about $20
  18. Yes, a compass is important, but also as important is a map of the area you are in, and the knowledge of how to use both. What good is a compass if you don't have a map or know how to use it? I have also used a compass to help triangulate where the cache location may be.
  19. Check whatever library or post-secondary institution exists in your area. For example, Brock University has a wonderful map library, with access to topo maps that you can photocopy, while Niagara College has maps available for use.
  20. Please help! I am currently having issues with Duracell customer service. Who did you talk to and what phone number did you use to reach them? The young woman I talked to wouldn't answer a straight forward question: " Where is my unit now?" Prior to asking her, she told me that it was returned to me and then she said it was not and then she said I'd have to call back in 2-3 days while they "research" it. So I'd really like to talk to whoever you spoke with as they obviously knew how to provide customers with service. Thanks for you time! My incident happened about 7 years ago, so I have no idea who I spoke to. I think you may need to ask for a supervisor. As for what number I called, I just called the number on the side of the battery. Perhaps it's the difference between Canadian customer service and wherever it is you reside? Good luck!
  21. I have seen one that was Hallowe'en themed in Florida (GC1ZH1Q) that had a solar panel on the top and had lights on it. Pretty cool set up. Edit: Trying to get the link to work
  22. There was a cache that I found when I was in Florida that was an old Bic lighter that was laying in the grass off the side of a walking trail. The CO had cut a small opening in the side and slid in the log... Wasn't a huge fan of that one.
  23. To be fair, I have had a variety of brands of batteries burst, and my incident with Duracell happened about 7 years ago, and have not had Duracells burst since then. Edit: For typos... Stupid sausage fingers...
  24. It depends on the model of GPSr you have. I have a Garmin Etrex, and I can buy a handlebar mounting kit for it for about $20 or so. Look for your GPSr on the maker's website and see if it is one of the accessories. Since I have yet had the money to buy a proper bike mount, I just use a heavy duty elastic band to strap it into place. I just make sure to attach the lanyard securely to the handlebars, just in case the elastic lets go. Have not had a problem with that method yet! I wonder why everyone calls me cheap...
