  1. Okay. On topic.....geocaching......um......Oh! At a "T" intersection on a trail, If someone has put in a lot of effort to create arrows out of rocks and logs to point you in the right direction they are probably right.
  2. I have to wonder if this class counts towards any type of elective course. If you have to spend the money on an elective anyways I would probably take the class. It would certainly top my list with choices like bowling or basket weaving available.
  3. I found the different classifications of lasers rather interesting. The Armys M1 family of Main Battle Tanks use a class IIIb laser range finder. We are only allowed to arm the laser on ranges. Even though the lasers operate in the invisible spectrum (1.06 microns) and have a pulse that lasts only 8 nanoseconds we still take all the precautions. Newer tanks use a class IIIb laser that is declared "eye-safe" but we tend to still treat it as a direct fire weapon system.
  4. Thanks Sputnik! That is closer than I thought! Its strange how I can no longer visualize measurements in feet. 160 meters, why that is just 10 meters past the 3rd target on the rifle range, thats only 110 paces (counting left foot only), its about 5 telephone poles away........528 feet is like.....uh,......
  5. I don't have a conversion chart nearby......wondering how many meters is 528 feet? After 8 years in the Army I can't even come close in estimating range in Feet anymore.
  6. You could always try e-bay. People will buy anything!
  7. Groundspeak will purchase Wyoming and turn it into a Geocaching Theme park.
  8. If all you want to do is throw in a couple of coupons I don't see why you just can't make it a regular cache (with swag and log book) and list it on this sight. From your description that sounds like all you are really planning. I have found some decent coupons in caches before. Is the idea to get people to the cache because of the business or to get people interested in the business because of the cache? Is it about the fun of hiding a cache or is the emphasis on advertising?
  9. Besides the pocket queries, I really enjoy being able to pan the maps and see check marks on caches I have already found. This helps me to quickly see which ones I haven't found yet and plan my next search accordingly.
  10. I really don't care where the money goes. I am a paying member and am more than happy with the service that is being provided with my membership fees. So that is all I should really care about. I also assume that my fees help cover the cost of maintaining this site even for those people who choose not to become premium members (nothing wrong with that). I would even be happy to know that someone is making a living off of this site since it must be a full time job for a handful of people.
  11. I've had a similar idea for a cache that I haven't implemented yet. My idea involves the cacher bringing a photo to a cache that has some basic scrapbooking supplies (colored paper, glue stick, child safe scissors, stickers, etc) that they can use to quickly create a scrapbook page. I might give it a try next year. I could always archive it if it doesn't work out.
  12. Just last week I found out about the "new messages" link at the top of the page. Didn't even know it was there. Now I see I have overlooked another icon at the bottom of the page. What else is there?.......haven't clicked on the "calendar" yet... M1A2 Abrams......uh... I mean "Tanks"
  13. I've been reading the forums since I joined in May but I never even noticed the little PM icon at the bottom of individual posts. The mini profile is kinda cool, didn't see that before either. Just when I think I'm getting somewhere in forum know-how, I take a dip back into the "silly newbie" realm. Nice feature but I don't forsee making much use of it. What would I want to say to someone that I wouldn't just place in the forum?
  14. I live in Colorado but am currently in Kentucky attending a two and a half month school. I thought I was familiar with the area until I went Geocaching here. I am getting out and seeing places I would never have seen otherwise. Its been a great way for me to get out and see the sights on the weekends.
  15. A better question would be......How far can your controversial topic go before CO Admin shuts you down?
  16. This concept of a cache is not new nor is it limited to the Special Forces. The actual defintion of a cache is as follows: "In the most general sense, a cache is a place, often hidden, for holding valuable items. This term may be used, for example, in the context of hidden treasures, stored food for later consumption by animals, or a cache of arms (a weapons cache) placed by an army during war for later use. " I am a Tank Commander on an M1A2 Main Battle Tank (see avatar) and we use caches in defensive positions. Should we need additional tank rounds it could take too long to get a truck out to our location so we create caches nearby that we can hide tank rounds in.
  17. Someone is always going to complain about something. Theres always going to be someone who wants to change the rules and tell people how things should be. Its no different than the rest of the things we enjoy in life. -Someone tries to tell use what kind of movies we can or can't watch. -Television we can / can't watch. -Music we can / can't listen to. -What to read / not read -What to eat / not eat -What to buy / not buy -Too much violence in video games. We just get to here about it more often because this very forum is a great tool for expressing our opinions.
  18. If the point of the cache is to bring you to a nearby business of interest but all you have to do is the typical trade and sign the log than its no big deal. As long as the cache is just a cache then I see no problem with it.
  19. Yeah, things are running very slow today. It doesn't happen very often.
  20. After a little more thought about this subject, I have concluded that the reason that this event is posted at all is so that the campers can experience the full spectrum of Geocaching. After all, finding a cache to hunt online is part of the sport. So what if it is a very exclusive event? It will be archived as soon as it is done anyways.
  21. It seems like there are a few different definitions of what a find is. For me, you have to see the cache, its hiding place and have someone in the group throw your name or handle into the log. As despicable as the puzzle and multi cheater was, he still found the cache.
  22. Hey now. I'll admit it took me awhile to figure it out too. I couldn't find it defined anywhere until I found a link to Clayjars definitions and acronyms page.
  23. I understand the purpose of the cache and think it is a great idea but it really didn't make sense to post it on GC.com. It would be like posting an ad in a paper for a car that isn't for sale.
  24. Colorado Springs has a lake at a popular park that is being drained to find a leak that it has. A local metal detector enthuisiast found a wedding ring that had been lost for 30 some years. Some older women asked the man to locate it for her and a few days later he found it. It belonged to her husband who lost it while water skiing. Not exactly on topic but I thought it was a neat story.
  25. So would you temporarily disable the cache when the yard work is done or just change the criteria: Cache is hidden somewhere in gutters?
