  1. I have larger backpacks (2400 cub. in) that are really too large for local family hikes. Any recomendations on size and type/model to look at?
  2. I am starting to manage caches through my bookmark lists but don't know how to upload them to my GPS so I can go cacheing. Can anyone help? For an upcoming trip I have saved 27 geocaches in the area we will be in. I would like to bulk upload these to my GPS. Should I prepare for a trip a differant way?
  3. Hello, It's been awhile. We have got back into geocaching and I want to broaden my horizons. I have succesfully downloaded a topo map of Delaware onto a card, installed on my Colorodo and it worked but this was a year ago. As I re-call I had some learnign issues on how to get this done. I still do. Can anyone give my a guide on how to install the Depot maps onto my card and then have them work on my unit. I try not to asl too many questions on one psot but I am also looking for advice on which map (s) to download off of the Depot website to meet my needs. I am basiclly looking at east coast. DE, PA, NY, New England, MD VA W VA etc.
  4. Being new to the hobby can someone explain virtual caches? Sorry for simpy questions it's just that I only have a short amount of time before leaving and too busy at work to do the proper research. I did remember how to download the caches into my GPS and did so with a dozen or so last night.
  5. Heelo, It's been a while for us to do some geocaching. We are heading to Gettysburg PA tommorow and thought why not see if there are any caches their. I brought up the site and wow I see their are plenty and unfortunatly we aready have a packed schedule. Are there any caches that would be fun for (beginners basically-have found about 1 dozen caches) the family. We are going on this trip with in-laws who have never geochahed and I am looking for some caches that they might find the hobby interesting.
  6. I have now played with my Colorodo 400 c for a couple weeks now and getting more used to it everytime I play with it. I want to get one (a few) of the protective screen coverings I have seen mentioned here. Can I get a few opions on these and where to get them?
  7. I should have looked at this before posting. The marine maps usually start showing detail at 1/2 a mile when using the map that came with the unit. When I also turn on the downloaded topo the marine map detail doesn't turn on until 800 ft.
  8. I've also noticed that when I have the downloaded Topo's selected along with the marine maps that come with the "c" model I have, that I loose my marine map details (water contours and depths). Why?
  9. I've downloaded Topo's for from GPSfiledepot for Delaware onto a SC Card. Got them to show on my Colorodo. But when zooming in I see detail (contor lines) from 800 ft and out but when I zoom in closer than 800 ft I don't see any detail. Any suggestions?
  10. I do relize this is a long explained answer. Just so someone doesn't spend a lot of time expaining, I am figuring it out.
  11. I'm making progress with downloading maps from gpsfiledepot. What is the maximum size card I can run in my Colorodo? I'm looking to load various Topos and some sort of city/road maps and was hoping I could put this all on one card and pull the maps up shen needed on the Colorodo. Is this possiable? I will look in the manual but what kind of SC card is needed?
  12. I have downloaded the maps that I am interested in. PA area. There are 176 .img files. How and can I download these to my Colorodo in this format?
  13. That I have the Colorodo C in my hands and getting used to it I would like to load some other maps. I got the "C" for the marine maps due to my needs for this unit. I intend to use it for Topo (hiking, geocaching etc.) and possiably get the raod maps as a back up to my Nuvi. I have read the posts about the free maps here. Due to my lack of electronics software upload challenges I am trying to take baby steps. Should I look into the free maps or do you think this might be to confusing to load and manipulate once on the unit or stickwith the bought Garmin stuff? I don't want to over complicate the unit but want to have these maps avaiable on the fly.
  14. Got it working. Thanks for the help. Sorry for my ignorance but it still wasn't clear. I called Garmin and they walked me through it. I had to make a change in my ActiveX software (can't really explain other then click on the bar and make changes). Loaded a cache and found it. They also sent me an e mail with how to do software and firmware updates which I did and it worked fine. Still not sure the Colorodo c is right for me. I still think it could us a little more brightness on the screen when over land. I did play with some profile settings that seem to have selected a brighter background for land that might help. The more I play with it the more I find things.
  15. I just got a Colorodo 400c to try out. I can return in 30 days no questions if I don't like it but thats another subject. In tring to load the Garmin Communicator Software so I can load cache info from this site onto the Colorodo I get a message that says: "Please close your browers before continuing. Press retry to continue, otherwise press cancel to exit installation. (If this message persists you may have to close all of your other applications) I believe I have closed everything but it still isn't working. Any suggestions... By the way we entered cache info manually today and found our first cache We also didn't find our second cache
  16. Does anyone know of a rebate that Garmin is promoting right now?
  17. Did I see a promo where if you buy a new Garmin GPS you get 30 days free to the geocaching web site? If yes is this the same leval as the primium package for $30 a year?
  18. I played with an Oregon and a Colorodo for an hour one sunny day outside a West Marine store. I wear Costa DelMars. Maybe a differant run then your Oregon but I couldn't see the screen. The Colorodo, although not as bright as I would have hoped but at least viasable. I 60 series I only held inside a store but do think it has the best visabilaty of those mentioned.
  19. Opps all the underline were not meant to be there.. Sorry...
  20. Thanks to all your responces... I have been weighting out the pros and cons between the Oregon c, Colorodo c, 60CSX and the 76 CSX. I have several purposes for this unit. 1. Marine Use - Must be waterproof but not necessarly float. With this handheld I plan to fish in several locations in the mid-atlantic in back bays. It must be visable in sunlight with polorized glasses on. 2. I'm liking the geocaching aspect of utilizing a handheld. We are always looking for parks and outdoor adventure. We have a 5 year old son and "treasure hunting" seems like it would be a good motivation to be outside in the woods and other places in the outdoors. Incorperating this while camping and our outdoor adventures seems like a great fit. Since not owning a PDA and for me personally not really needing one (other then to store cache info on it) I'm not really into another device to charge and carry. 3. With hunting and family hiking, having a good readable GPS will be handy and fun. 4. I would like to have a unit that gives me the marine coverage (basically Mid Atlantic reagion) I need, have the Topo coverage I generally go to (Mid-Atlantic region) and possiably having a second car navigating GPS meaning street software to back up my Nuvi 260. -With that being said the Oregon is out. Doesn't work in bright sunlight with polerized glasses on. -60CSX (around $300) as many have said it seems like a stable, realiable unit. It doesn't offer the paperless geocaching info and with only having base maps I would have to dump (if you will) several dollars into it to get all the maps I want. -The Colorodo 400c (around $400) has the marine maps (plus a little more then a purchased map) that I need. Has the paperless cache info feature and still has a decent size screen but overall a smaller unit for carrying. I still would have to look into and purchasing the topo maps for around $80 and the road maps for around $70. SUMMARY -If going with the 60 CSX ($300) or the 76 CSX ($300) I would need the marine maps for around $150+, the topo for around $80 and the road maps for around $70. Total cost (60csx+marine+Topo+Road=$600+). Plus (the 76 more so) is getting pretty big for pocket carrying. -If going with the Colorodo 400c it would have a good marine coverage map included, but I would need the topo for around $80 and the road navigator for around $70. It has the paperless geo info. (Colordo 400c+Topo+Road=$550) I do hear that maps are availble for all these units for free but that savings/cost would apply to all the units I'm looking at. Considering my usage/need of utilizing the marine application I am leaning towards the Colorodo 400c. It seems since that the software and firmware updates have attempted to fix first run problems of the Colorodo. I keep thinking of the convienience for just loading cache info into the unit and off we go for our adventure but not having done a cache hunt yet I'm not an authority. Sorry for a long post but I thought this info might help someone else in my shoes and I try (expecially spending this kind of $$$) to get what I really want the first time. Any thoughts????
  21. Does the Colorodo have a working (actual functioning) compass-electronic I believe? Does the 76CSX have a working (actual functioning) compass-electronic I believe? Does the 60 CSX have a working (actual functioning) compass-electronic I believe?
  22. Starbrand, What about the Colorodo instead of the Oregon?
  23. A local/nationwide marine parts store (Boaters World) in going out of bisness shortly and the have everything reduced quite a bit. I believe they have some 76 CSX units. The only thing I'm concerned about is "all sales are final". I like having the option of bringing something back if I don't like it as with Best Buy ect. What do you think???
  24. On other posts I have put up the 76 series has been recomendid as well. Most of the areas I will be fishing with this unit are areas I am familiar with so the GPS will just be a back up in case of fog. But I do plan to occasionally travel to other fishing grounds where the gps will be a more useful tool. With that being said and thinking about it a little more, I guess the geocaching, hiking, hunting aspect of using this might be a little higher priority. How does the 76 series handle the geocaching aspect? Do they come with a base map that is detailed enough or will seperate maps need to be purchased?
  25. I have been reading, looking at and pondering what to buy. I'm looking at the Oregon, Colorodo and the 60 CSX. Although not having any handheld I'm liking the therory of paperlass caching of the Colo. and Oregon (I understand I can get a palm or something of that sort to accomidate the 60) I spent an hour a piece with the Oregon and Colo. the other day, outside in the sun with my fishing (Costa DelMars-good glasses). glasses on. Keep in mind my main purpose for this unit is on the water fishing-bright sun but do plan to hike, hunt and cache with it. Well one unit, the Oregon is not an option any longer. If someone is considering this unit for an on the water GPS....forget about it. This was done with brand new alkalyn batteries in both units. You can see the Oregon without glasses but not real easily. If you put polorized glasses on, screen is virtually blank. If you were to mount this unit on a dash somewhat away from the grasp of your hands you would not be able to enjoy anything that it is showing you and probably become a hazard on the water, kind of like a texter while driving a car. The Colorodo was much much better to view. I kind of like the roller and felt I could work it pretty easily. As far the other pros and cons to the Colo. I have to keep reading and absorbing the info. I have held a 60 CSX in a Best Buy but not outside but would think from reading here that outside is no issue with this unit. Seems the 60 CSX is a great unit, solid satlilte fix, accurate, tried and true. I need more info comparing the Colo and the 60 CSX pertaining to map quality. The Colo would have a base map in it that is fairly good enough to use. Not sure about the 60 since the one I held was a topo model. The Colo was the © marine unit. I would select either a marine or topo unit but have seen most upgrade that map for more detail. Is this the same with the 60? Another question is, although the 60 csx is cheaper upfront have does it rack up price wise once you get the need maps (I'm thinking at least a topo and marine-I have a nuvi for car) to get what you want? Waterproof is a must for anything I select. All help is appreciated and has help thus far...
