    Newbie Question: Why Mark a Cache as Premium Only?

    been awhile since commenting, so i'll just jump in here - seems like a good place to start again...

    personally use multis or puzzles for my cemetery hides deliberately to keep the newbie app cachers from racing around the cemeteries without showing proper respect for both the place they are at and the cache hunting process itself.

    IMO, if they have the patience & take the time for figuring out a field puzzle or multi, then recamouflage and stealth will be observed more readily... i reserve using PMO's to deflect undue negative press towards geocaching on compromised/difficult caches...

    lucky me, this topic started with shawn staing what he liked... today i'm wearing Mea Culpa Mauve lipstick as i compose my confession to y'all... yuppers, i am guilty of those cut-n-paste logs with inclusions of my personalized adventure at your cache hide... in the future, probably will still try to correct my procrastination of timely logging, but will continue geocaching as it's FUN... and phooey to those who cannot accept my geo-quirky ways and logs - but that's the way i like it... B)

    hmmmmmm, well, since you asked...

    when i show up to your event with my walker & oxygen tank, making the trip to be with my caching buds, pitching in to help whereever needed, not to mention adding to the fun of the event by wearing the appropriate shade of lipstick, then i do very much deserve my well earned smiley, irregardless of the D/T rating ...

     

    perhaps either i cannot/choose not to actively participate in the physical event aspects, my integrity would still allow me to post an attended log in-the-spirit-of-geocaching...

     

    that being said, vrrrrrooooommmm... daisy dakota's ready for another road trip... B)

    I'll be sure to start posting notes directly to your cache listings for any maintenance issues you don't fix up within two weeks.

    oops... :bad: see what happens when i try to be funny after a night of imbibing adult beverages with friends... sent the email after composing on site, but forgot ( mea culpa) to delete original thought processes... guess i'm not ready for primetime... this was practice for the upcoming MWGB Area51 - yeah, that's my story now and i'm sticking to it...

    "spring cleaning housekeeping" duties at Geocaching HQ seems to have spilled over into summer... in the email box this week was a reminder to take care of a "Needs Maintenance" icon on one or more of my cache placements...

     

    ever thankful for the additional nudge to improve upon my sometimes procrastinating & lackadaisical cache maintenance habits, i was still curious... after all, what's good for the goose - well, you know...

     

    copy of email i sent the Cache Owner,Geocaching HQ, today - enjoy the ironic chuckle... perhaps they should have checked their own cache placements before sending out the reminders to the rest of us; or did it just get away from them like it does us? B)

    also, on 7/7/15 both GC4B84C and GC4GW89also had NM's...

     

    Geocachers often report this when the logbook is full, the container is damaged or if the contents are damp. Check the log for more details.

     

    When you visit your geocache to do any required maintenance, here are a few reminders:

     

    - Replace the container if the current one is in bad condition

     

    - Make sure that that your container is still watertight

     

    - If any of the contents are wet, dry them off or replace them

     

    - Check that there is enough space left in your logbook

     

    After you visit your geocache and fix any issues, be sure to add an 'Owner Maintenance" log. This gets rid of the 'Needs Maintenance' attribute and informs geocachers that your geocache is good to go. Learn how to do this here.

    just passing on some suggestions overheard at recent events for the powers-that-are Groundspeak HQ:

     

    1. on smart phone geocaching apps, the .com for geocaching.com reference seems to be missing - that would go a long way reminding newbies that this is a sport activity with an entire community, not just a quick-fix gaming app for running around town...

     

    2. do not allow anyone to post a needs archived log from the phone. logging in to geocaching.com from a pc & actually taking the time/thought to what they are doing could

    perhaps eliminate the "I can't find it/archive it" fever going on...

     

    3. missing travelbugs have increased from just a skosh to bazillions. assuming it's newbies who grab them, but then don't know what to do with them, this problem needs to be addressed on the app itself.

     

    4.the advent of privileges and fewer restrictions could lesson the displeasures on both sides - is that possible with only a premium account?

     

    any other thoughts ???

    Challenge cache idea but need feedback

    You meeting the challenge requirement yourself is not always a requirement. I just became aware of a cache: The Texas Percentage ChallengeYou have to have finds of each cache type which is more than certain percentage of the Texas cache count.
    1. 30% of the amount of Traditionals in Texas (16,963 Traditionals)
    2. 40% of the amount of Multis in Texas (558 Multis)
    3. 40% of the amount of Virtuals in Texas (140 Virtuals)
    4. 40% of the amount of Letterboxes in Texas (100 Letterbox Hybrids)
    5. 40% of the amount of Puzzles in Texas (1456 puzzles)

    The cache owner has less than 2900 finds, so he doesn't qualify. The current minimum find count to qualify is 19,217 caches.

    In Arizona at least the reviewer will not publish a challenge cache if the CO doesn't qualify. This seems to be a new thing

     

    likewise in NW Ohio - i recently passed the CO challenge-qualify requirement only to still lose out getting it published on another technicality... geez, Keystone keeps us on our toes - 'tis a challenge to get a new/unique challenged published.

    What to log on a nano run.

    I always write individual logs that address my experience at the individual cache. That's why I don't do many power trails. I think my max has been 10 on a power trail. I would never do a nano power trail - unrolling and rolling the tiny scrolls would drive me nuts. Maybe I'd right about how the tiny scrolls drove me nuts and say it slightly differently each time.

     

    Nano 1 - Man that tiny scroll was hard to get out of the button nano.

    Nano 2 - I had a hard time writing in tiny print on this log.

    Nano 3 - These tiny scrolls are driving me crazy.

    Nano 4 - I was surprised that this one wasn't on the left side behind the sign, but rather on the right side behind the sign. I'm starting to get carpal tunnel symptoms in my hands.

    Nano 5 - My fingers are going numb.

    Damaging A Cache

    Isn't damage to a container part of the risk a CO takes in placing a cache?

     

    Yes.

     

    Should a seeker be responsible for unintended damage?

     

    Yes.

     

    I wouldn't say the seeker should be responsible for unintended damage to a container. Depending on just what the container is I think there are many situations when the hider should put it down to experience and think of how their cache will look and how people will interact with it.

     

     

    If the cache looked like a piece of trash left lying around the CO should perhaps be thankful that the cache survived the process at all and wasn't rounded up and thrown in the trash by a well meaning cacher who logged a DNF but did a bit of CITO while they were there.

     

    knowing that the "unique container" i've placed may (and has been many times) be citoed, i made up many duplicates, always in my geomobile, ready to replace -- the experience for the finders is too much fun not to be at the ready from my cache owners position...

    On another note, has anybody noticed the newsletter this week? It may just be me but it sure seems like GS is realizing a negative impact and now wants us to "brush up on the basics" and then "share our knowledge" with a noob. Maybe this is a regular thing for them that I'm to new to know about. I've never had a problem teaching others anything I know about but this sounds to me a little closer to "let's all be a big happy community and clean up this mess we've made". -Note: All quotes are very loose interpretations. Please no nasty grams.- :unsure:
    Refreshers/reminders make their way in the newsletter time-to-time, so I don't believe there's a hidden message anywhere.Most I talk to say they use it to check events and such, skipping the marketing spiel above anyway.Many folks we know don't even know what it is.Went out with others this weekend and one didn't know about the 7 souvi thing.17 posts ago, you became one of the 1% (or less) of cachers who ever enter the forums. Go to an event and share what's a hot topic here. Most won't know what you're talking about

    as for the ALR's, well, be as creative as you can, stretching the guidelines to the max, within the realms of decency

    :rolleyes: that your local volunteer reviewer will allow and forget about the cheaters as they're not worth the effort...

    Looking for a NE Ohio geocaching group. Gets lonely doing it by myself :) I see there used to be a NEOGeocachers, but I can't find any evidence they still exist. Anyone know of anything?

    woohoo, a chance for an addition on the to-do list?...well, just can't pass up on suchanopportunity...

     

    i received an email notice today for the Geocaching Blog to Write a Comment – Nominees for the February Geocacher of the Month... :unsure: with mobile apps for instant geocaching,

    and global current events being instantaneous, this backlog of an award seems a bit old school...

     

    methinks at this time of March, the votes and comments for the April Geocacher of the Month would be more appropriate...

     

    geez,how about Eric Schudiske putting on a challenge event at Groundspeak HQ to speed up the process a skosh?
