  1. I'm a Chrome user, and have been pleasantly surprised by how many GM scripts work as extensions under Chrome. However, the Ord Surv script doesn't seem to be working. CAn I ask two things:- a) Should it? (i.e. are there any greasemonkey specifics in the code which would mean that in all likelihood it won't work) and Can someone explain what I should see visually if it did work on a cache page? Cheers! Matt
  2. I think something is being lost in translation here. In simple terms, "home" (in GSAK terms) is a "special" location that is hard-coded into GSAK, so that when you add a location with the name "Home" into the locations box that will map straight through to the item called "home" on the centrepoint menu in GSAK. All other locations are dynamically added to the locations menu. What it doesn't do is automatically start up GSAK with the centre point as "home". GSAK will keep the centre point the same as you last set it, and only when you choose "centrepoint > home" will you centre the database on your home. So, this isn't a work around, its the designed way it is supposed to work!! Matt
  3. Yes, that works much better! Thanks eaglegale Doesn't work for me unfortunately. I *think* that what GC.com does is use the first set of characters plus the first character of the final set of characters (e.g. XX1 1 as part of XX1 1XX). From memory this is the postal sector (presumably, the centre of it). The last two letters are the part which dictate the postal "walk". So presumably GC.com only bought the data for the postal sectors, and that's why it fails to put you in the right place. I get the same centre point for my postal sector on various other mapping sites, consistent with the place that GC.com thinks I want when I enter either the whole or just the first 4 characters of my postcode. You can test out my theory for yourself in google maps - enter the "XX1 1" and the "XX1 1X" parts of your post code and see if this tallies with where GC.com believe you need. Matt
  4. Well it works with my old eTrex over a USB / Serial adaptor. It might "work best" with a USB cable, but it works fine for me (once I had a USB / Serial adaptor which was fit for purpose of course!). Matt
  5. The mischievous side of me wondered if placing a cache with a small low powered jammer inside it (as described in the article) would make for a very interesting cache! GIve out accurate coordinates, but no-one with a GPS would be able to successfully find it!! Matt Great idea for a mystery cache! I was just thinking along the same lines... Of course, if you were able to map out a circumference around the 'blackspot', just head to the middle for the cache. At least 8 years ago I was on a RIB (boat) taking a high speed trip around some islands. I had with me my venerable eTrex and my camcorder. We set off and I was curious to see how fast we were going, so had the eTrex out and was watching the speed. I then put it on my lap and tried to video my son (who was terrified, aged 2 I think!) and get the speed of the boat in the same shot. But whenever the camcorder was on, the GPS would completely lose signal - absolutely all sats would disappear. So maybe I should just stick my now old and unused camcorder in a cache with a permanent power supply to achieve the same effect!! Matt

  7. Shame the setting doesn't come across to the GC.com maps - would be quite useful to be able to see the coordinates for the cache, and then perhaps the likely gate / stile / car parking spot that you want to be able to identify before heading out. Can't blame GC.com for not integrating a beta feature though! Matt
  8. You mean the cacher MapOnly or Edscott I believe. Paul Repak? Aaaagh!!! Edscott is who I was thinking of. Thanks! An easy mistake to make, for sure. Am I missing something? Wasn't Paul Repak the guy arrested for trinket stealing?!? Matt
  9. Presumably they were just looking for an iPhone app which would locate things, and they came across the GC app and thought "that looks good" (which it did to be honest!). Or maybe Jason (or, please please please Suzi!) are geocachers that we'll bump into one day?!? I can live in hope..... Matt
  10. I was somewhat "naughty" by using my bluetooth GPSr with my netbook on the last flight I took - with the European version of Autoroute enabled I could get a nice track of where we were overflying with the GPSr on the table in front of my son (by the window) and me in the aisle seat. Bluetooth is supposedly not allowed on the flight (for no good reason!), but it did work nicely. Next time I'll cable it up though to avoid having to go wireless on a plane. Matt
  11. If anyone really thinks that burglars are monitoring the website of a niche pasttime just in case you are out on a specific night, I think you need your paranoia setting adjusting. Burglars are opportunistic, they don't plan "heists" like you might see in the movies. They walk around the back of dark houses and try the doors, not monitor GC.com event logs to see if someone will be away. I can possibly see that twitter posts ("Just setting off on holiday!!") might conceivably provide an opportunity for a friend of a friend of a friend to know you are away, but I think "will attend" logs add no risk at all! Matt
  12. Can you explain this? I've seen others say the same, and I can't for the life of me work out why! Surely the GPSr points you in the right direction with a nice friendly arrow - why would you need a compass to help? Matt
  13. Do you have a Java & bluetooth phone that you would take with you anyway? If so, consider a bluetooth GPS receiver. Dirt cheap (I just paid £13) with some free software (e.g. trekbuddy). Very light to carry, mine works fine in my pocket or in my flourescent arm-band (for when I'm running). Certainly worth a punt. Matt
  14. Did you set up a paid for notificaiton via TweetSMS? Because I'm on Virgin, I had to set up a TweetSMS account (which costs per sms sent to you). Order of events is as follows:- GC sends email Gmail filters that email and forwards to "TwitterA@twittermail.com" Twittermail posts this message to "TwitterA" on Twitter "TwitterB" (who follows "TwitterA") sees this update TweetSMS is setup linked to TwitterB and to forward tweets by TwitterA to my mobile TweetSMS get paid 5p for the privilege! Complicated I know, but seems to do the job! Matt
  15. 93 CURRENT GCGT5W I believe the phrase is DING to norsch. Having visited Bigton (GC1KB63 - St Ninians Treasure is on the "island" nearby) on Shetland many years ago (Britains largest active tombolo) I have something of a soft spot for them, and didn't realise until recently that the land that Llandudno was on was also one. Plus tombolo is a great word! Matt
  16. Thanks, all sorted now. It was suggested I re-try with a new username, which I did and that prompted an email for activation straight away. Now username has been changed too to my "preferred" option. Cheers! Matt
  17. OK, thanks. But as I can't get my login to the forum activated (because the email won't come through!) I can't do much more. Perhaps someone here can post on nwcaching to see if there is a problem with new user activation? Cheers! Matt
  18. Somewhere I will no doubt visit later this year! Tombolo? Matt
  19. I got two last night which were almost 2 months old!! Matt
  20. Read much of interest on the nwcaching forum last night, and tried to register. However, haven't had a confirmation email, and everything other than the forum seems to be offline at the moment (e.g. www.nwcaching.co.uk) Does anyone know anything about this? Matt
