  1. You are not ruining the fun, its nice to have an unusual hide to keep people guessing. However, people have paid petrol money, took time to venture over to your cache, I can't blame them for being a tad annoyed if they are unable to find it after several tries. 81 DNFs and not a single find???? If it was a cache of mine, I would be getting worried that nobody was finding it. No matter how well it is disguised, if the coords are spot on, somebody should have put their hand on it by now?? p.s. - I'm too far away from Reading - wanna share your secret so I can hide a similar one up here?
  2. Like this you mean ........... FIND A GRAVE ALPHA. INSCRIPTION AND POSITION
  3. Does it not say in the Guidelines - 'find the cache and SIGN THE LOG'
  4. So - your hunting for a cache and its in a stone wall - drystane or ancient mortared, free standing or retaining wall. You know it is not right, you know the cache should not be there, you can see the damage being done by hunting ........ 1. Do you immediately report to reviewers. (this could be several days/week later if you are on holiday) 2. Do you quietly hide the cache as close as possible to the co-ords and spare everyone's blushes. 3. Do you say where you have moved it to on the log thus giving the hide away but at the same time preventing more damage? 4. Do you slap a NM log on the cache and hope the owner reacts. 5. Sometimes it is an ancient mortared stone wall, a nano poked in a hole and the loose mortar replaced in front, but poking out ancient mortar still causes damage. 6. Do you quietly email the owner advising them of their error and hope they sort it out. 7. Do you put the cache back where you found it - thus yourself being in the wrong and risking more damage until the cache is sorted out. Now I seem to be finding more and more caches in stone walls and I am not referring to one particular cache. Is this just hiders not reading the guidelines? I never know what to do when I find a cache hidden this way, it could be a genuine mistake/cache drift/ignorance of guidelines? What also seems strange to me is that dozens of 'experienced' finders have been there before me???
  5. Looks like the wee bug has spread up here!
  6. Not everyone visits forums. Simple search for Peterhead will bring up local/active cache setters in the north of Scotland? Might be worth contacting a few of them, see if anyone is interested?
  7. There was a weekend camping event near us recently, logging requirements were that you had to attend the night adventure in the woods to find the log book. As there was no nearby accommodation and we don't wish to camp the event was not available to us so we simply found something else to do. If it is a camping event where do you stop with the logging requirements? Only if under canvas, no day visitors? There are also pub events midweek - Ok for the locals, but no good for those who travel and also excludes those with children. Evening meal events - that excludes dogs? Non wheelchair friendly events. Then there are the hill walking events, again only suitable for the fit and kit equipped cachers. Plenty choice of types of events to go around, and all with reasonable logging requirements. You are never going to stop those who 'pop' in for 5 minutes for what ever reason, there is no time limit on events that I know of? Surely as long as the logging requirements are reasonable and sensible, is not variety the spice? Its only one smiley - Its not about the numbers - Is it?
  8. Can only speak for Perth What we did ..... Caches published well in advance of the event for people to organise their PQs/routes and to help them decide what area they want to be each day. (Also looks good on the map for encouraging people to attend a Mega) Plenty log books/paper in both new and existing caches. (Mega Perth issued local cachers with maintenance kits to do this) We didn't hide any nano's or micros. Most of the closeby micros got archived and removed as they were not suitable for hundreds of cachers, only a very few were kept within the town itself. The cache closest to the venue got a new position more suitable and the micro was replaced with a box. You can't do much about the queue for some caches, it is going to happen! You can't hide temporary caches they are meant to be permanent! Disable - only if it is really unsuitable but you would need to remove the container or cachers will still hunt for it. Why disable, you will get more hits to your box than you ever will otherwise? Yes it could disappear after hundreds of finds over the event weeks, but then it could also disappear after only 5 finds in a year? Tourist spots are also going to be muggle spots. Trails of caches coming in towards Perth from various directions. Caches around all the side event venue's. Variety of caches to suit all - need some within walking distance for those using public transport and nice trails around camp sites. I know some of you do not like Drive by caches, but the 'Drive in the Country' wee boxes proved a most popular series both to number crunchers and those who just wanted to explore the area and see a bit of the scenery - and of course you cannot guarantee perfect weather so these are great for rainy days or if people are just footsore from previous days excursions. Consider a TB Hotel near major roads so that travellers can get moved along towards their goal. In a position that can withstand a wildebeest trail. Inform local police what is going on. And of course it goes without saying ............ all in interesting spots!
  9. Hey, pretty darn smart!! Even I managed to get it working!!
  10. So, If I am reading it correct, You arrive at the designated spot for 9.30 and await further instructions. Are the clues sent by text or email? Not everyone has a smartphone that receives emails? If people are relying on going to an Internet Cafe then smartphone users will have an unfair advantage?
  11. Tesco have half price lock boxes at the moment. 670ml box for £1.25. Poundshop have logbooks 10 for £1.00 Pencil, zip bag, few swaps - sorted!! Nano - you will have to replace the log book every 5 mins, box definately the way to go! Good Luck with your first cache.
  12. What an excellent set of coins. Design very well thought out, love the extra touch of the complete poem. Best coin 'series' I have seen yet!!
  13. Why not Phone(y)Tree No More Add a piece to the description explaining what used to be there, and the fact that you have kept the cache going due to the views/location etc. Let people know clue has changed by note, in body of page or in clue itself (now under pile of sticks). That way you are still keeping most of the name so as not to confuse. Not a lot else you can do if cachers working from old PQ's. Wouldn't archive/start again unless absolutely necessary as you are just making previous finders return to the same spot.
  14. We missed Mega Wales being a sunday as we really didn't fancy travelling all the way home afterwards. We will miss Oxford for the same reason. Would you consider a saturday giving people the sunday to travel home? Sure we were not the only people who couldn't make a sunday event. Thanks.
  15. Thank you AW, that is the first sensible approach I have heard. The only possible guideline to come out of this could be that all caches within view of muggles/windows, regardless if it is Urban or Rural should have a spot on precise HINT, understandable by all - that way finders do not look suspicious.
  16. Well hopefully after this event, and with thanks to Deci's help plus the media attention, ALL Polis are being/have already been made aware of Geocaching. Not all are on a power trip though, and yes, some Polis are already cachers, In fact some have also hidden a lot of caches!
  17. Two Events coming up in your area Sunday 17th July, Falkland Estate Tea and walking the Fields Saturday 6th August, Glenrothes Formonthills All ages welcome and a chance to meet some locals!
  18. Are there any guidelines listed anywhere of what is required for a Virtual? Can give us time to plan?
  19. If the Police force could just be made fully aware of Geocaching, then they can just look at the website, and see that the cache page says box covered in black tape with wire handle attached ................ If 'Mrs. Woman' cafe owner had just asked the cacher what he was doing??
  20. Wetherby? WETHERBY ??? Why would anybody hide a bomb there anyway? Gives the local newspaper some interesting news I guess??
  21. Yes, thanks for that. situation - stood armpit deep in nettles, rain dripping down neck, trying not to slide into the ditch in front of me, so resort to clue which starts - The cache is a 35mm film cannister with a geocache label around it. It contains a logbook small pencils and some small items including ........... The clue was 5 sentences long, going on like that, when it could have been just two words. Ahh well, I turned away and got back into the car long before I got to the end!
  22. and why should the two be different? If you have a smartphone with a purchased app you can leave a blank log. if you use the internet, you can't leave a blank log? ............. ???
  23. Is it me, or are HINTS getting longer, full of unnecessary information that should be on the cache page? Not everyone has a GPS or smartphone that holds/decrypts them. Some cachers still to try to find the cache without the Hint, using decrypt at the site only if struggling to find. also Are you also finding that you need a degree in botany, need to be a literary professor, excellent at the Times cryptic crossword, fluent in foreign languages ................
