  1. SOLD today on eBay - Thanks for looking! stephen
  2. Hi All: I recently listed my Magellan GPS 2000 XL on eBay for a very reasonable $35.00 using Buy-it-Now. It's in very nice shape - even has the original box and User's Manual. This unit was our back up, and accompanied us on our first 120 cache finds. A nice unit for entry level caching. You can check it out on ebay - look for item number 5751931336. Thanks, Stephen
  3. Bought my first MeriGreen from them (via eBay) and had no problems whatsoever.
  4. Well, my Meridian Green had had it's share of short drops and falls with no adverse effects, but one afternoon, due to my thick-headedness, I left it on top of the van as I buckled up our 3-year-old after we spent an hour and a half on a DNF. A mile down the road, my wife and I hear "bump, bump". My first thought was somebody threw something at the van - then, horror - I left the GPS on the roof!. As I gazed into my rearview mirror, I saw my beloved Merigreen bouncing down the pavement. The unfortunate thing is we were being followed closely by a Chevy Dually, which made short work of my trusty GPS. Hello, Magellan? I need to order a new case, new screen, new battery compartment, new buttons... Think it still works?
  5. Checking in from Xenia, Ohio. Been caching since 4/03; broke the "magic 100th" find just this month. Enjoy caching the Dayton and Cincy areas. I'm originally from Denver (via Arizona) - my better half is From Cincinnati (via Detroit). We've met some great folks out caching - maybe we will see you soon!
  6. The 2000, 200xl and 4000xl are older Magellan units. If you are going to go this route, I'd stick to the 4000xl, as it has 12-channel reception, as opposed to the earlier units, which were 2-channel units, and took forever to get a lock. We have a 4000xl, and it has performed well. It has been with us on out first 90 cache finds. These are 1996-vintage units, so don't expect stellar performance - they are ok for an entry unit or backup gpsr.
  7. Go with the Meridian. I use my Merigreen with my iMac running OS 10.2.8 and virtual PC 6. I went out and got a USB card reader/programmer ($15 at BestBuy) to program the SD card with the MapSend maps - it works superbly. Transfer via a USB-to-Serial converter, which you'd need with the Legend, would be SLOW at best. The Legend, having used one, is a very good unit, altho IMO the Meridian trumps it by using easy/quick SD cards, and the Meridian's helix antenna - which can't be beat under heavy tree cover.
  8. Thanks everyone for your replies - I located a Merigreen thru help of the Forums!
  9. Hello, I am looking for a replacement for my Merigreen which met an untimely fate yesterday. If you have a Merigreen or MeriGold for sale, or are thinking about parting with yours, drop me an email. Thanks. Steve kascinoh@earthlink.net
  10. Got my MeriGreen off eBay for a good price - this was a refurb unit. It works flawlessly, and has a 90-day factory warranty. Do your homework, and you'll probably be ok...
  11. Police Sgt here. 14 years on. Counting the days (years?) 'till I can geocache whenever I (we, family) like.
  12. Valle Greene Cache is right off I-675 in Fairborn (if you are near Wright State U.)
  13. Matteu, not trying to influence your purchase, but I recently got a refurb Merigreen off eBay, and now have it loaded with Topo 3.0 maps. I have an iMac, and I was very hesitant about even trying this (USB to serial interface cable/SD card reader-writer, running VirtualPC so as to run Topo 3.0, etc. etc.) I must say with all the help on this forum, it was not that hard at all. One of the big advantages of the Meridian line is they use SD cards for memory. I bought an SD Card reader/writer (19.99 at BestBuy) and a 64Mb SD card (29.00 at WalMart), popped it in to the reader/writer, dragged the maps.ini file from the Magellan program folder onto the card reader, and I was done - transfer size for an 18meg map was about ten seconds! Pop the card in the GPS, and it's ready to go. Garmin and Lowrance make some good units, although you might run into some compatibility issues with OS9 and VirtualPC and the USB to serial cable. Just some thoughts - YMMV.
  14. Software? Cable? I have a 2000XL, and to the best of my knowledge, the unit doesn't support "software" in the sense of uploadable maps/waypoints/POI info. I know Magellan used to make an interface cable for this unit so the data could be sent to a computer, but I've never seen one for sale anywhere. We still use our 'ol battleship XL to cache with, and have had very good success.
  15. As a cop, I also use mine to list the Lat/Lon on traffic crash reports we submit to the State of Ohio.
  16. Hmmm. Been reading this thread for some time. I would turn it over to the police, but then I'm biased. If the Officer you'll speak to knows his stuff, you'll get a property receipt with his (or the property manager's) signature on it, showing a date and time you turned it over. Inquire as to the *exact date & time* you can get your found money if no-one claims it - depending on the jurisdiction you are in this could be anywhere from 30-90 days. The problem is, tho, you've already posted a picture of it on here.... "...yeah, that is it, officer, a brown pill bottle with this breakdown of bills in it - it was hidden in a crack of a wall in this park, etc.". Was this public or private land you were on? A question might arise if this was private land. Just my thoughts...
  17. Ok, now that I have my 2000xl in front of me, try this: Press MENU Choose SETUP MENU Choose COORD SYSTEM Choose LAT/LON Choose DEG/MIN.MMM -this will get your display to 3 decimal places. Also, try: Press MENU Press SETUP MENU Scroll down (or up) to MAP DATUM Choose WGS84 Hope this helps. Might want to keep your 2000xl around as a backup if you are going to spring for a new unit...
  18. If your display is only going to 2 decimal places, you don't have it set up correctly. I have a 2000xl also - I bought it used, and it wasn't set up correctly when I got it. To make sure you have it set correctly, press MENU then Choose SETUP. Choose , I think, LAT/LON (I'm going off memory here...) - then set it to the choice with ".MMM" as the display option. Also, in your setup choices, be sure to select WGS84 as your map datum... I've used my old 2000xl and have had very good success with it...
  19. Our local WalMart (Xenia, Ohio) had a Magellan 315 in their case - new, all manuals, but no box. It was priced at $80.
  20. I got a Magellan 2000xl off eBay for less than $40 inc. shipping. Buddies thought I was nuts. I don't need mapping, 50,000 routes etc.... This unit works just fine for caching, and I have had no problems with it under (fairly) heavy tree cover. Depends what you want - this is the bare minimum, but it works just fine for caching - some folks can't imagine a unit without mapping...to each his own...
  21. We all get sidetracked at times - be nice to geocache all day everyday. A quick thank-you to Keystone Approver who approved my cache in just under 4 hours. Unfortunately, due to the RAIN we've had here the past 5 days, it hasn't been found yet...Maybe I should have titled the cache "Noah's Ark" instead...
