  1. I just use an online generator. http://www.the-qrcode-generator.com/. It has always worked for me. I had thought about just getting some waterproof stickers and printing the codes on them with a laser printer and sticking them in places like the back of a street sign. But, to me that would be defacing property so I tossed that one quickly. I have also thought about making a bunch of short youtube videos where I dress my son up in costume and make him act like a gatekeeper to give the next set of coords.
  2. Would using qr codes for a multistage be ok? Where the qr code would give you the coordinates to the next stage?
  3. WHy not just use a real rock? Get a 1 3/8" diamond hole saw and just start cutting holes. 30 cal ammo cans are 10"x3.5"x7" So just line out that on the bottom and start cutting and chiseling. Nothing looks more real than real. http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?partNumber=197865-28303-12116&langId=-1&storeId=10151&productId=3303220&catalogId=10051&cmRelshp=req&rel=nofollow&cId=PDIO1
  4. I myself prefer someone to add more than just TFTC. OK your so busy you can't even type out Thank you. I like to read the logs of my caches and I like to read stories like yours. Someone is just upset because they didn't have that much to say. Oh well Keep on posting LONG logs. I know exactly what I would have wrote back to them. But, I am blunt and mouthy.
  5. Sounds like a good spot. You won't get the volume of cachers that a 1.5 1.5 LPC will but the ones you will get will enjoy it and make better posts about finding the cache. I always try to put more than the tired old TFTC in my find logs. As far as difficult there is one in Maryland GCY72P that you either have to free climb a old bridge pillar or some have been known to take a helicopter to the top to get the cache... I think I hid my first after about 20 finds and it is still a popular cache to this day.
  6. So to add more to this discussion. 1. It has been unarchived and I have been asked to move the cache. I will do so ASAP. No problem with that. 2. I have talked to the finder and they reported it. Again they found it to be unsafe yet they still proceeded to retrieve the cache and replace it. I find that Odd. 3. No where does it say DANGER. The warning stickers clearly read WARNING STAY OUT Hazardous Voltage. Meaning don't cut the lock off and go playing with the innards of the transformer. 4. These Warnings are on the front and the back (Where the cache was located) Mind you on the ground slightly under the concrete slab. You can clearly see the warnings while approaching the cache. 5. Here are photos of the warnings and the LOCK. As you can see in the picture it clearly state STAY OUT of the box. The danger is inside the box not outside the box.
  7. GS isn't going to know the list of restricted areas world wide. From the looks of things, it appears (my assumption) that the owner of the property called GS directly and said "remove it". It is up to YOU, as the cache owner, to determine what areas are ok to have a cache on it. For the most part, GS is a listing service and they rely on the common sense of cache owners to put caches in reasonable locations. If they know about restricted areas such as national parks, or state parks that require permits, etc ... they will gladly communicate this. Because reading and comprehension is so difficult for some on here. The last finder called and reported it to geocaching.com. It was so dangerous as to call it in yet not so dangerous to keep that cacher from retrieving the cache and replacing it. How can they not know, are they not in charge of this? How do you run something like this and not know your own rules?
  8. The whole point of this thread is that GS doesn't clearly state what a restricted area is. How are we supposed to know what is restricted and what isn't. About the whole geocide thing. It is not just ONE cache. It is a series of events that have been happening over the last 7 or 8 months that are not only pushing myself away but a few cachers in my area. Like I said in my last post that a few of you didn't bother to read. The last finder reported it to GS. It was so dangerous that this person needed to report it yet it wasn't so dangerous to keep them from retrieving the cache and signing the log and replacing it. If the log entry would have said. Arrived at this one and seen that it was on a big green box that said DANGER High Voltage so I contacted GS about it and didn't retrieve. I would have been OK if that's what happened. No big deal I'll move it and all will be well with the world. It is the fact that no communication was tried between the finder or the lackey to me about the cache. The rules on restricted areas are not clearly defined as to help CO's place their cache. Communication is key in this world.
  9. I wouldn't have been angry if I was given some choice in the matter. Or if they would have just asked me to move it. But, to archive it for no reason other than in a restricted area. When restricted areas are not listed. How am I supposed to know it is a restricted area? Let me guess read the mind of some LACKEY? This is a game I do for fun with my kids. All these hidden and always popping up rules make it NOT FUN. Just got an email from the last finder. They reported it to GS as being unsafe. Though not so unsafe as to stop them from retrieving the cache and signing the log.
  10. I contacted the original cache reviewer and she/ he is contacting GS and will let me know the results of that inquire. They were confused as to why the archival as well and stated that GS normally contacts the local reviewers when this happens. Once I get more info I will post it here.
  11. The cache is the size of a match box roughly (It is an Outdoor Products SMALL pink waterproof container from walmart that I painted green). Here is a screen shot of the location. It is not in anyone's yard so I am not sure where all that is coming from. All I wanted was the courtesy of being offered to move the cache. If they determined it was unsafe then so be it. I know no one cache sets a precedent for others. Which in my eyes is complete utter BS. If my cache on a transformer is unsafe why are any other caches on transformers safe? Shoot every Boring LPC in the world needs to be removed because you have more of a chance of getting electrocuted by the bare wires in there than by touching the outside of a sealed transformer enclosure. Who's job is it to keep us all safe? This is more than a few years old because there are trees around it now. So I guess the next cache placement I was going to do is out now as well seeing as I was in the process of purchasing a cable protection vault to make into a travel bug hotel.
  12. Okay. Your call. If that's how you want to teach your kid to deal with adversity, go for it. Do you live in my area? Do you have to deal with the triple standards in my area? I see caches get placed that are in clear violation of rules and guidelines. I also see reviewers making up their own rules as they go along and then contact CO and DEMAND they archive and remove those caches not even a month after they (The Reviewer) approved every one of the hides. Stating that parking along a road is unsafe..... I just don't get the whole no contact. How can you effectively do this to me when you haven't laid eyes on my hide? I also do this for FUN. I could care less about numbers I do it to get outdoors with my kids. If they are going to make it NOT FUN then I am not going to do it.
  13. So I just had one of my listings archived. This cache GC1X4WNhad a cacher find it made a comment about high voltage and BANG archived with not even a courtesy email or something. No other reason given other than restricted area. I looked at the cache placement guidelines and underground transformer is not listed in the restricted areas part. It is getting so hard to place a cache with all the hidden rules and rules that just pop up out of nowhere. One fellow local cacher got an email DEMANDING he remove 6 or 8 of his caches because cachers had to park on the side of a back road. Really it is getting out of hand. Why is GS being so restrictive anymore? I know that when I geocache that I might get ticks, bug bites, I might meet a snake, other caches, cops, muggles, I might fall and injure myself. Heck my son got Lyme from caching. So what, that is the risk we take. Why is it that gs is trying to wrap us all in bubble wrap? Do we not agree to not hold GS accountable for injuries or death from caching? My cache is next to a underground transformer. Is there high voltage inside? Yes. The transformer box is made so that it is grounded and it is locked. So really it doesn't pose any danger to a cacher. If for some reason the box did become electrified it would short to ground and throw a switch on the line killing all power. Which would alert the local power company. I just can't see any reason why it was archived other than someone ( A lackey what ever that is) has no darn clue about electricity. This person lives on the other side of the country and only has 25 finds. Has been a member for just over a year. This is what really pisses me off. That person has not clue where my cache is other than looking on a map. How can you effectively do this stuff if you haven't even seen or found it? I really have half a mind to archive all 30 of my hides and just quit. It is too much of a hassle anymore to trying and find new exciting placed and spend my hard earned money making unique caches when I have to fight GS over it.
  14. Having someone come by and archive your cache for no reason. No contact attempted with CO nothing. Just a note Archived for being in restricted area. When the area it is in is clearly not in the restricted category on geocaching.com. Or Having cache reviewers that make up rules as they go. Then contact cache owners and DEMAND they remove over 50% of their caches because this new made up rule now applies.
  15. So what do you do when someone has had your TB for over 6 months? One person has one of mine and I keep sending them messages to please place it back out there. It is my daughters and she is a little upset that it has went 50 miles then you got it 6 months ago. They are active finding and placing caches but they refuse to answer messages or to just place the tb back out in a cache. I even said let me know if you lost it not a big deal to me I will just get a new one and set it lose. Nothing not even a a go BLANK yourself. This really upsets me in the fact that people are this petty.
  16. Perhaps you didn't read the full title Snoogans' Tb Longevity Clinic, whine about your lost TBs elsewhere! Try here: The Official Travel Bug Obituary...., Do your whining here......... OOPS Sorry about that. I do think I get the award for the shortest distance moved in almost a year with 50 miles.....

  18. We are lucky in my area as we have Quantico MCB close by. Plus we have one cacher that gets tons of ammo cans in all sizes from quantico MCB and he has them in a pile next to a cache on his property. We are allowed and encouraged to take them as we need them. surplus stores are going to be your best bet.
  19. I plan on getting one when they come out. It will be great for work that I do. As I will be able to do on the spot work tickets. The battery life is really good and not sure how you are going to carry extra batteries unless you know how to take the thing apart.
  20. Man all we ever get to see are squirrels and muggles. I even did caches way up in the mt's in Northern CA. I gotta start working harder at spotting animals. This guy was watching us like well a squirrel.
  21. Man we have been nailed 3 times by the popo for geocaching. We say hi and act civil and answer questions and explain geocaching in a easy to understand way like We use satellites to hunt got tupperware in the woods and in town. We show the officer our nice fancy GPSr thingy and show him the cache we were just at. Don't act like your up to no good and be polite and honest and just explain what you are doing so someone who doesn't do it could understand it. My wife likes to use the "Hi-tech easter egg hunt" analogy. They laugh and we all go about our business.
  22. I like this one and may have to employ it in my hides. I currently have a very very evil one resting in the trunk of my car. It is TOP secret and cannot be discussed for it may give away the hide. Lets just say it weighs 10 to 15# it is a micro and it uses a natural occurring camo container.
  23. We have come upon some that say 1/1 and they are crazy hard to find. We had one with 3 of us my wife and I and a friend looking for 3 hours. The cache owner was not very forth coming in the discription nor did he leave a hint. His coords were off by over 50 ft on this one and many other this cacher did. When I get to within 10 to 20' of GZ i put the GPSr in my pocket and start the search. I look at it like this. If his GPSr was off 10' and mine is off 20' then that is a 30' radius I need to search. I also find that if I am having troubles I will walk 200 or 300' away and approach from a differ direction. 9 times out of 10 I make the find after doing that once. We had a cache recently placed in my area and within 30 minutes it had been taken down and put back up 4 times because the coords were off my MILES not feet but we are talking a mile or 2 off each time. This cacher has 5 or 6 times the finds and 20 times the hides as I do. Some people are just not very good at getting the right coords.
  24. When I set a new cache Which I am getting ready to place 2 or 3 new ones here soon. I find the hid spot place the cache and then I take 10 or 20 readings by walking away from the cache to different distances and walking back to it then set a way point. I try to do this in all major and semi-major directions of hte compass. Then I go home and transfer all that data collected into MS Excel and use the average function on each of the columns. I then used that averaged point for my submission to geocaching.com.
  25. Thanks for the info. I will keep an eye out for the new fimware to make it out of beta.
