  1. As a prescriptive linguist, I have to agree with the post that called for a distinction to be made between an "initialism" (all the examples cited in this thread) and an "acronym". PS Only kidding about being a prescriptivist. I hate those language sticklers!
  2. My understanding is that the UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) grid with its straight metric measurement is much simpler than the degrees and minutes of the Latitude/Logitude system. So if you were using a topographic map with UTM grid lines, marking a cache point would be simple. My GPS unit can be set either way. I agree with the previous post: both versions of the .LOC data should point to the same location. If you had your GPS set to the wrong datum, then neither of them would get you where you wanted to go...
  3. Is it possible to hide/maintain a cache that would be underwater for a good deal of the time? If there is such a thing, what kind of container would work? Although I'm new to geocaching, I think I remember reading in one of the FAQs that caches should be long-term commitments. I suppose the owner of the cache could periodically check the integrity/waterproofness. What do you think?
