  1. Hi everyone!

    RE: GPXSONAR

Does anyone know hot to save the fieldnotes so that caches are shown as found and are saved that way.

I tried looking on the GPXSONAR site, but their message board isn't working properly.

This is what I do, and I'm not an expert on GPXSonar by any means. From the PDA screen that shows the list of all Caches, e.g., GCXXXX, tap and hold the GCXXXX, and a pop-up menu will appear listing "Show hints, Field Notes, Set as Center, Ignore, Dismiss Menu", I then select "Field Notes", and that in turn brings up another pop-up window that is titled "Field Notes:GCXXX" with several boxes that you can select. The first is the "Found it" drop down menu which if you drop it down also lists "Did not find it, Write a Note, Archive it". Then there is a Timestamp button and below that is a big box that you can input text about the cache, and below that are field for Actual Coordinates and TBs, Delete Note. So if you found the cache, I use the drop down menu and select "Found it", then I input some text about the cache, then I tap the Timestamp. Then I simply tap the "X" in the upper right corner to close the Field Notes dialog box and return to the main screen that lists all of the GCXXXXs. You'll notice a green icon (piece of paper) in the Notes Column (note, nothing will show up in the Found Column until you log the find on geocaching.com and get you next updated gpx file and loand back into your pda) next to the GCXXX number which is the field note you just created. This reminds me, do you see a Notes column when you at the main screen that lists all of the GCXXX caches. My columns from left to right are Type, Waypoint, Travel Bug, Notes, Found, Name, Diff, Terr, Dist, Bearing, Owner, Last Log. If you don't see a Notes and Found column, you may have to check and see if you have GPXSonar to display those columns. Go to LIST, Preferences and make sure you have Note and Found checked as visible columns. The Found column will show a green check mark once you log the find on geocaching.com and update your gpx file. The note column will show a red icon (piece of paper) for a "did not find" and a green icon (piece of paper) for a "Found it".

    Hope this helps.

  2. I have a friend that just got the HP 6515 and we are exploring how to load the geocach pocket query from geocaching.com into the 6515 so she could do some caching. She purchased the HP NavTeq GPS sotware bundle which provides maps, points of interests, auto-routing, etc.... Any body have experience on how to load the gpx file into the HP 6515? Thanks in advance.

  3. In the example above, in the 2nd frame, the cache is by Rooman and its a Diff/Terr (1.5/1.5) and it's a Regular sized cache, and I have the hints after that.

Geoff, it appears that you don't have the note/comment restriction of 30 characters in shot #2. You stated that you load the hint as well. Does all this fit in the note box?

  4. For those that have "played" with the new 60csx, I'm wonder if any changes have been made to the number of characters that can be displayed in the geocache comment field.

The character string is unchanged at 30. I personally have all the info (minus the hint) that you mentioned. Since I use a handheld PC to carry about 1500 cache pages, I use that if I really want the hint. I sort of hate to have it too available, though.

Quoddy, thanks for confirming this for me. I also carry a HP 4705 PPC with my cache pages, but I just hate carrying both. I sent an email off to Garmin about the 30 character limit and asked if in the future they would implement this type of feature. We'll see what they say! :)

  5. For those that have "played" with the new 60csx, I'm wonder if any changes have been made to the number of characters that can be displayed in the geocache comment field. I use GSAK to create my cache waypoints and would like to include the hint, among other parameters, but the current 30+/- character limit is not conducive for listing the hint. My buddy's new Explorist 600 list all the necessary data, e.g., GC Code, name, hidden by, terrain, difficulty, type, size, last found and hint. It would be great if Garmin could implement something like this as well.

  6. I would suggest e-mailing that information to Garmin.  As our Geocaching community grows larger by the day.  Acknowledging our wants, wishes and desires in a GPS unit is what they must do in order to compeat with the compitition.  If you suggest it they seem to be very receptive.  If we do not tell them what we want they wont know.

Send them an e-mail.  We all have to tell them what we want.

Email sent to Garmin, thanks for the suggestion CacheKicker.

  7. In reading through the posts above, it looks as though the 60 x series can only store map info on the transflash memory card. I would agree that being able to store geocache waypoints on the card would be a great benefit, especially if the comment field in the waypoint screen could hold more data than the 32 odd characters. I have a friend with the new magellan explorist 600, and his geocache page will list all the info you need, GC code, name, place by, date last found, difficulty, cache type and container size and even the "hint". He no longer needs to carry his pda. I hope that Garmin implements this as soon as possible..... Anyone have any insight on this?

  8. Last summer I took a beginning GPS class at REI and we leaned UTM for use with topo maps, but since then I've been doing more geocaching and seem that LL is easier as you don't have to convert to UTM. At this stage everything is confusing so I feel more comfortable with LL until I get more experience.

  9. Using Gsak and GPSonar as well. I also use sonar to log my finds (field notes), and then exported the notes to a Gsak file. I then imported the notes directly into Gsak. Subsequently, I have a PPC crash, now I can't seem to get my notes back into GPS Sonar. How does one do this? I thought if the notes are in Gsak, when I create a new *.gpx file for the PPC, the notes would reappear. Thanks.

  10. I can reproduce the lockup over and over. If anyone wants to try it heres how I did it .

1- select a wayoint and choose "goto" next choose "offroad" for routing method.

2- hit the menu button and choose "recalculate route" then select "follow road"

Locks up tighter than a drum:( every single time.

I am calling garmin to report the problem so hopefully they can fix it.

Yep, that is exactly what I am now experiencing as well using the procedure you have outlined. Hope Garmin fixes this soon. Until then, I'm going back to the prior version as this is real anoying when I'm doing mutiple caches and want to autoroute between them. At least I know I'm not the only affected 60cs user.

  11. I'm new to paperless caching as well, and have GSAK on PC, and GPXSonar on PPC. When I find a cache, using GPXSonar, I log the find with the Field Notes, log it as a find, type some text about the cache, etc... Question I have is do I then need to import the GPXSonar *.gpx file back into GSAK to same my notes, and what would happen when I get an updated *.gpx file from geocaching.com, will this overwrite my notes in the GSAK database? Thanks in advance.

  12. I use a Pocket PC screen protector to cover my 60cs screen. I cut it to size, and have had it on the 60cs for over 6 months with no issues. Just another options for those that want some type of screen protection. The PPC screen protector is made by Fellows and I purchased it at CompUSA.

  13. I posted this in the incorrect area, so I'm re-posting here. Sorry!

Just got my 60CS as well, and I agree with all of you, that this is one fine unit. The screen is so great in direct sunlight as well as at night with the back light on. I've started geocaching, and this is going to get very addictive. I do have a question though. I download my *.gpx file, then using easygps, I download the cache waypoints into the 60cs. Then when I go out geocaching, I hit the find button, then select geocache, and a list of nearest caches appears. Select one, go-to, and I'm off navigating. When I found it the geocaching screen allows me to mark the cache as "found" and logs a find in the calander. However, when I go to the calander, there are two entries for every cache I found. This does not make sense to me. Any thoughts?
