  1. Im looking at buying a old Etrex off craigs list. I see a Summit for $35, but am only interested if it has Garmin's "High-sensitivity receiver". The old Etrex without that don't perform well under tree cover, so I'm not interested.
  2. PS, anyone know of any facebook groups or forums for Vermont. The ones posted in the pinned thread are all boarded up, and the facebook group I found only had 8 members....
  3. Hey, I'm going to be in the area for work. I am planning to hike up Mt Mansfield (in Vermont) (on Sunday, 05 June, 2016) using "The Long Trail" and bagging the Benchmark, and a couple of earth caches up there. (And the caches down in the Notch too) Anyone interested in joining me?
  4. Your Android based phone should work well. However, 2 things I would think could be your problem is 1) Reception. Are you under tree cover, downtown? Anything that will reduce your visibility of the sky, or cause multipath bouncing will mess us your phone's accuracy. 2) What are your location settings? On my phone running Android 4.0 (Lollipop) Settings>>Personal>>Location>>Mode>> For GPS only (Best for geocaching), select Device only. High accuracy is good to, and may help you downtown. But whatever you do, don't use Battery saving. That is absolutly no good for geocaching!
  5. Question: Why are you using that Dell X5 pocket pc? I hope it is not because you read some old info, and think that you have to use old equipment. Personaly, I would recomend getting either a handheld GPS, or a android or iOS smartphone (as long as it has wifi, doesn't have to be connected to a carriar). It will make your life much easyer.
  6. Well you are welcome to organize a similar an event, but with your scientific riggor. Please report back your results here on the forums.
  7. Funny, I was just talking about this cache last night. That must have been a great adventure!
  8. The 1m result was obtained by averaging over several minutes. However, you can see another result that was obtained by averaging that didn't do so well. I can't speak for the settings of anyone elses GPSrs. As for time, The list is generaly in sequential order. These were taken over a period of about 1/2 hour. Please note that this was not a scientific test. It was ment to be fun, and learn something. We're not sure just what...
  9. I hosted an event where we all brought our GPSrs downtown to a survey marker (Event Link). We then all compared how our GPSrs were able to handle the multipath effects of all the tall buildings. Here are the results: Google Documents Spread Sheet I found the results interesting. Key points 1) commercial grade GPSrs do not handle multipath very well. (Only phones and Garmin products were tested, other brands may be better, or worse...) 2) Phones were as good or better than handheld GPSrs at handeling multipath. (my phone, the Samsung S5, was set to only use the GPS. Other phones were in an unknown state) 3) Averaging everyone's waypoints generaly improved the accuracy, but was still way off (15m).
  10. My only tip is to re-release them with replacement tags. You can use the copy tag, or there are several companies that sell replacements. It costs a little less than buying a new TB tag, and may help put some preasure on Groundspeak to try to do something about the problem.
  11. Just email your reviewer. That is the best place to start. Maybe you will get lucky. As a second step, you could contact appeals@Groundspeak.com (or whatever that address is). Maybe someone will see it your way. Don't get your hope up too much though.
  12. I had the same thing happen when our PM lapsed for a while. Access to OT, too. Then, one day, poof, no access to OT, though it still showed as PM on the forum. Now that you've outed yourself on the forum, don't be surprised if a moderator "fixes" it for you. I've seen it happen. B. Yep. About two hours after I mentioned the basic/pmo thing - someone decided to "help". - OT isn't as fun as it used to be anyway... I don't really care. I don't use this forum anymore anyway (just to help new guys a bit in the Getting Stared Forum). I perfer to chate with cool guys like Mr.Yuck in a different forum.
  13. On the forums I am still listed as a PM, but I have not been a PM for about 6 months because I have not logged out and back in. Don't tell anyone, but I still have access to the OT forums.
  14. I don't have my phone in front of me, but essentialy, from the main screen you hit Info, then the (I think) data or map tab, then you can delete the maps you chose.
  15. I really like using NeonGeo for offline caching. It automaticaly caches map tiles (when the settings are correct), and when you view a cache listing, it is also saved and can be used offline. The trick I use it to set the map to "Managed Map" rather than "Live Map". Also, under settings, unselect "Online". The app will stop trying to get anything from internet. And again, it can very simply downlode your PQs or GSAK gpx files.
  16. Sounds like you guys need to ditch the Groundspeak offerings and switch to one of the partner apps. CacheSense is my favorit. NeonGeo works well as well. Both offer offline maps and caches, and the ability to import GPX files.
  17. CacheMaid seems to be working great now. No license issues, no map garbling issues.
  18. I don't have too much experience with the Groundspeak app. I use CacheSence and NeonGeo. However, there should be an offline mode where you can download caches and maps via wifi. You should then be able to use the app offline.
  19. Good point. The scale in the bottom left in that picture shows 50 miles, so the whole screen would be about 200+ miles.
  20. I do not "Rocover" favorite points from archived caches. Infact, I have awarded favorite points to caches that were already archived. I have plenty of spare favorite points, I am quite selective on who gets a point. If you are short on points, I suspect that you should raise the standard you use for awarding points.
  21. The local community knows this is a sock puppet account but only a few people know who the actual cacher(s) behind it is/are. At the risk of going off-topic, regardless of outcome of the ruling from The Frog, I encourage the OP to wait before publishing another string of caches. Wait and see how many maintenance issues crop up with the current caches, especially after they have been out for a few months and have been found a few dozen times -- and especially after they have been through an Alberta winter. The last thing the area needs is more caches that have fallen into a state of disrepair. I also would encourage the CalgaryTowerCachers to consider putting their energy into hiding caches in interesting places, rather than simply because they make an interesting shape on the map, but that's a personal preference. There are hundreds of caches in our area already, and only the most prolific local cachers have found them all -- we really don't need a whole whack of "just for the numbers" hides. OK, editorial mode off. I would tend to agree with DanOCan here. While I think it is cool to have a well done geoart near my house, I also think that that is a lot of micro caches. Also, I noticed that some of the solved coordinates are right in front of farmer's homes (10 or more of the caches, #28 and #47 are particularly bad). I have heard of several other occasions were upset farmers has resulted in mass archival. It may be worth moving those caches.
  22. This search solution only works with the new search, not the old search. Unfrotunatly for me, the new search has no way to download the results, so I still can't get these updates onto my GPS...
  23. Oh, I just discovered what does work for a Basic Member. I did a search for puzzle caches with a radius. When I mapped the results, that map used the updated coordinates.
  24. Thanks. Im currently not a PM (unlike my avitar sais), so some of these solutions won't work. But I guess that is one of the benefits I am currently missing out on....
  25. I am updating the coordinates for puzzles I have solved. What maps will reflect these changes? The main geocaching.com map?, the maps on the cache page? The map on the android app?
