  1. How do I get to my private lists from the new profile page?

You can't. You can't on the old form of the profile page either. That has only ever shown the lists you've marked as public.

To view all of your lists, you'd need to go to your Lists page. This can be accessed from

    • New dashboard: the "Your lists" link on the left side
    • Old dashboard: either the "Lists" link at the top of the page or the "My Lists" link on the right side

Thank you! I had bookmarked the old profile page - https://www.geocaching.com/p/default.aspx?id=217132 - which brought up the page "This is a new profile experience...". THAT page had nothing on the left, just a list of hides and finds. Even clicking on the lists tab, there was nothing. I even tried the link to take me back to the old profile and then used its link to return to the new profile - nope. It wasn't until I clicked on our user name way up top in the header that I got a new profile page with the stuff on the left. Not intuitive at all!!!

Edit to say that the way I was getting there from the old profile page was to click on "lists" on the quick view line at the top of the page. My original question wasn't very clear - I knew private lists never showed directly on the profile page. It's just that I couldn't find where to click to get to them. :)

  2. How do I get to my private lists from the new profile page? And is there anyway to summarize the favorites list instead of having to scroll past all the caches we've favorited to get to our public lists?

    Thank you,

    Mrs. Car54

Edit - Aacckk! I was playing around on our lists page accessed through the old profile and wanting to see what the little slider button did, I slid it to the right on one of our lists. It indicated we will now receive an e-mail whenever one of those caches is logged. NO! I don't want that! It won't let me move the slider back and I don't want to delete the list.

Edit # 2 - NM - you have to "click" the button, not "slide" it.

Thanks for the feedback. If these comments are about the website, please be sure to post them in the latest thread for updates there since this thread is only about updates to the app.

    Oops! Sorry about that!

  4. I won't comment on the changes as it is my impression it would just fall on deaf ears.

I will instead say that comparisons to the rollout of the new search are not valid. The dying down of those complaints is at least in part because the old search is still available. I, for one, use the old search almost exclusively. The only time I use the new search is if I already know the exact GC number, which is rare.

Just making the point that you can't infer satisfaction with changes just because feedback slows or disappears. It could also mean your customer has just given up. While that may not mean much on any given issue, the cumulative affect could well prove unfortunate for your business model.

  5. It's 2017. Everyone's got a smartphone. Geocaching is not something you do behind a desk. Make the "Create geocache" and "Edit geocache" pages mobile friendly!

I don't have any type of mobile phone.

Geocaching does involve sitting at a computer for me...and a lot of other folks.

Your assumption that everyone has a smartphone is way off-base and ill-informed.

    B.

So, just because you don't have one, the majority that do should not be accommodated?

Why do you assume the majority has a smartphone? And those that do, why do you assume they want to use it for caching?

    One of the "minority?"

  7. We are downsizing in preparation for retirement and selling most of our coin collection. Below is about half of what we have. All coins will be shipped inside a coin flip, wrapped in an index card and taped (no tape on coin or flip!) and inserted into a bubble envelope. I’ve weighed the coins and calculated postage – the shipping cost per package of up to 5 coins will be $3.65 for USA addresses. Larger packages, I'll weigh them and get back to you on the shipping cost. I’m willing to ship internationally, but the cost for that is pretty steep - $14.50. All of these coins are activated, but are easily adopted over. Please *e-mail* me through GC.com if you are interested.

    Thanks!

  8. In the Netherlands we have just had some new laws implemented auto-reoccurring payments are forbidden because businesses are counting om people forgetting to cancel.

Groundspeak is a US company, so they probably don't fall under that law.

Regardless, auto-renewal is increasingly being considered "shady". Apparently there are laws in the works in Australia regarding such contracts, and there have been many investigative reports by journalists about the shady practices of gyms which could lead to legislation in other jurisdictions. It's unfortunate that Groundspeak has decided they need to resort to using shady or illegal business practices to survive (see the previous VAT controversy). Continually shooting yourself in the foot and alienating your customers seems like an inherently-flawed business plan, but what are you going to do...

+ 1 - and that's coming from a user who has VOLUNTARILY been auto-renewing for over 10 years.

  9. Is it intended that this functionality exist only from the new search page? I tried the old search page and can sort of understand why it's not there as I imagine you want to encourage folks to wean themselves away from the old search (which, btw, I still find much more intuitive, not to mention easier, than the new search). But why wouldn't it be available when choosing "search for geocaches near my home location" from the profile page?

    Mrs. Car54

    1. Do you use lists? Why or why not?

I use lists extensively. In fact, that's about the only way I ever plan our caching trips anymore. We currently have 26 lists.

    2. How do you currently use lists? Why do you put caches on lists? Are there list related tasks that are tough to do?

I use the ignore list for its intended purpose and appreciate that it is available.

I use the watchlist to either keep an eye on TB's we've moved that have gone missing or caches we DNF'd. Once the TB or cache is logged, I remove it from the watchlist.

As others have mentioned, I use lists to keep track of challenge cache fulfillments (10 lists), our limited list of FTF's, upcoming vacations, upcoming cache outings, solved but not found puzzles, etc. Once that outing or trip is over, the list is a good resource for logging the caches. When I've finished logging, I delete the list.

Our biggest list (124 caches) is for caches we want to do. I have happened across them in some fashion - a post in the forums, the Geocaching Blog, FB post, whatever - and know that if we are ever in that area, we want to hunt that cache.

One important feature I constantly use is the ability to alter the cache title once it's in my list. For instance, in our Caches We Want To Do list, I append the 2-space state abbreviation to the front of the cache name, so my list is then sorted by state. I also use that function to order the list on vacations - by day or area and then by the order in which we will travel.

    3. How would you like to use lists? Is there functionality that is missing that would improve your experience? (Feel free to think outside current offerings. ie: collaborate on it with a friend, download to your GPS, etc)

I would love for lists to show the same columns that a proximity search conducted from a cache page shows - primarily difficulty/terrain, date placed, last found date and fave points. Then it would be ideal if I could not only sort, but filter the results. For example, I've already started a list for a vacation we'll be taking to GA this fall. As we get closer to the trip, I'll check the list again to see how recently they've been found. If it's been a while, I'll read the recent logs to see if there's a problem.

I do find it frustrating that once I've gone to a cache from the list page, I either have to use the back arrow (several times if I've logged the cache, looked at the gallery, checked out the map, etc) or click back through my profile to get back to the list. Same thing if I'm in one list and want to go to another. Can't you add "lists" to the "Play" drop-down menu or something?

I love these ideas already mentioned:

    - ability to add a cache to more than one bookmark at once

    - ability to share a list with only a specific cacher or group of cachers

    - ability to either run a PQ or click "map it" directly from the list page

    Thank you for asking!

    Mrs. Car54

  10. I, too, sympathize with the CO, primarily because of the behavior of the other cacher. What about the "sense of community" we're supposed to strive for? I could be way off base here, but I'm sorta betting that if that honked off cacher had contacted the CO directly and politely rather than rushing to GS to "tattle" on the CO, that things could have been resolved amicably and the cache would still be there.

I know my first action if I have a problem - almot any problem - with a cache or a CO's action, is to contact the CO and see if we can iron things out cacher to cacher. And you can tell the other cacher has an attitude "issue" here by the title of his pic in his reinstated log and (assumption here) by the fact that GS felt the need to edit his reinstated log.

While the CO may have had a knee jerk reaction, the onus of bad behavior is on the other cacher, IMO. YMMV

    Mrs. Car54

  11. I admit I haven't read the Help Center article yet  , but I'm wondering if an invalid e-mail bounce back (whatever it's called) to this automated HQ message would trigger an archival - thinking of long gone cachers whose e-mail account hasn't been valid for years.....

    Mrs. Car54

P.S. Since Groundspeak didn't communicate this change, the implication (at least to me) is that unless I get one of those e-mails, the Help Center article doesn't warrant my attention. If I'm wrong and it does warrant my attention, then surely it warrants the little bit of Groundspeak's time required to post a notification in the releases forum. :)

  12. I recently had cause to wish for this feature. We've been working on the series of "play anywhere" Wherigo hangman caches - with 4 different caches in each of 18 states. As we solve each one, it sure would be nice to be able to correct the co-ords, (visible only to us - just like a puzzle), so we'd know about where they are for whenever/if we visit that particular state.

I think it would also be handy for long multi's. We have some within an hour's drive of us that are quite excellent and cover quite a bit of ground, so we work on them off and on. It sure would be easier to be able to update the co-ords to whatever stage we left off at.

Since the logic already exists for puzzle caches, surely it wouldn't take much development time to add it to at least some of the other cache types, if not all? Please? :)

    Mrs. Car54

  13. I never said that archiving a cache is silly. My silly comment was directly linked to cezanne's comment about manually having to enter quotes instead of having it done for you. THAT is the silly that I'm referring to.

Ahhhh, thanks for the clarification - my bad! :)

Unless I'm mistaken, wasn't it you who stated that you'd be good if the notification (email you received when you got a new message in the MC) contained the entire text of the message?

<snip> If they've changed things so the full text of the MC message shows in the e-mail notification, I'm good. Otherwise, the MC requires more work on my part. <snip>

You are not mistaken. And yep, I'm good. I was just continuing the discussion - probably because I've had trouble with newbs on two caches that are causing me to think about archiving those two - nothing at all related to MC. **must learn not to let one issue bleed over into another**

    Mrs. Car54

  14. I know I would drop a voluntary hobby if it was causing me more headaches and problems than giving me joy.

That's it!!! Change the word "drop" to "archive" and the word "hobby" to "cache" and you have perfectly summed up my feelings!! So tell me why archiving a cache or caches is "silly", but quitting the whole hobby is not?

WHATEVER reason causes a CO to find a cache more headache than joy is a valid reason for THAT CO to archive THAT cache or caches. An example would be the recent thread about a DC virtual. Posters commenting on that thread are sorry to see the cache go, but no one is insulting the CO for his/her decision. And they don't even know for sure why the CO made that decision.

    Mrs. Car54

  15. Shame that the owner got pushed to the point of archiving but the location can still be visited and appreciated, even if the listing isn't active on this site.

    ^^^

This - I've bookmarked the cache so I'll remember to look for it when we are in that area. Still, sad to hear that a CO was taking so much grief from the "gotta have my smiley" crowd. :(

    Mrs. Car54

  16. 1. I can log into my GC profile on my Kindle, look them up, try to remember the exact spelling of their user name so I can find them and send them a reply.

If they sent you an MC message and you logged into your profile they would be at the top, aiming of course you hadn't gotten any more messages in the mean time. Their message would be right there waiting for you to reply to, no need to search them out.

Option 1 is on their Kindle, where the MC doesn't work. The searching they're talking about is for looking up the cacher's name in the old email system.

Yep, A-Team is correct. Didn't work on the Kindle. :)

    Mrs. Car54

  17. OMG - Oh my god

    Where is the profanity?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess the person who posted that comment to you can no longer see your reply. So I will venture to say that for people of devout Christian faith, using that phrase is considered profane and violates one of the ten commandments.

I'm attempting to point out how silly it appears...

    {snip}

I get the points everyone is making, but think they're not worthy of the doom and gloom of archiving ECs. Yes, it's a bit annoying and not as easy to use as email (which I've stated that I prefer), but it's NOT a completely worthless tool, as some believe it to be.

Speaking for myself, I often don't understand why someone archives their cache - any cache, not just ECs. I still think it's mildly impolite to call them silly for doing so. Those of us who are CO's have vastly different motivations for placing caches and it is the height of hubris to assume that my reason is the same as, or even superior, to someone else's. If those reasons are no longer valid for a particular CO, who am I to call them silly for their opinion?

    As to the Android discussion ... {snip}

So last week, I'm sitting downstairs at home on my Kindle, checking my e-mail and I get a "time is of the essence" MC e-mail from a fellow cacher (relating to an upcoming event). I attempt to click on the links to the MC from that e-mail, but apparently the MC doesn't play well with my Kindle. I can't reply to the e-mail because the cacher did not attach their e-mail. So my choices now are:

    1. I can log into my GC profile on my Kindle, look them up, try to remember the exact spelling of their user name so I can find them and send them a reply.

    2. I can decide that my "trick" knee is up to another trip upstairs to log into the PC, which would allow use of e-mail, MC, multiple monitors, etc.

    3. I can ignore the message until I am next at the PC for a different reason, which could be a day away.

None of those options take "mere seconds" for me.

I get that you are very tech savvy, almost certainly in better physical condition than I am and the MC is a big ol' No Problem for you. Please stop assuming it is that way for everyone. :)

    Mrs. Car54 (Yes, I have gray hair. )

(edited to clarify that the Kindle episode actually happened - it is not hypothetical)

  18. Snoogans, that is a beautiful tribute! We've only attended one GW - the one in our home state of IN and I don't think we've ever had the honor of meeting JoGPS. It sounds as though that is most definitely our loss. RIP, Joe.
