  6. The mac doesn't need special drivers to recognize the eTrex. You should start by downloading Garmins BaseCamp or RoadTrip and MapInstall and MapManager for the Mac. Either BaseCamp or RoadTrip can import .gpx files. Next get some maps of your area from http://gpsfiledepot.com and install them. You are correct that the plugin will allow you to install caches directly from geocaching.com. I don't know about .loc files.
  7. Still a few wrinkles, but the mapsource files are available at: http://www.gawisp.com/perry/mapsource/

  10. http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/ is the source for the free maps, and if you do need routing you will likely need a different GPS in addition to different maps.
  11. Check to see if your installation defaulted to the basemap. I had to reselect a detailed map, but have all the roads and landmarks.

  20. Ibycus USA doesn't do routing. Try http://garmin.na1400.info/routable.php The routing is a bit flaky in some places, but it is free.
  21. There is an archive of older Garmin software at http://www.gawisp.com/perry/ The Venture Cx stuff should be at http://www.gawisp.com/perry/etrex/venture/ What we have there is the standalone Windows upaters. Be aware that in some cases going backwards will change something that will entirely clean the unit of any of your data. Be sure to back up all your info and maybe grab screenshots of any customized screens so you can get them back the way you want them.
  22. What I do know about an official fix is that when I mentioned it to Garmin it was news to them. I sent them the link to the discussion here and they indicated they would look into it. Since I swap cards between my Vista HCx and my Venture Cx and only the Vista has a problem it may be hard to track down.
  23. It did get quite a bit of discussion when the firmware update was first released. I have both the Venture Cx and the Vista HCx. In my case the problem occurs only with the Vista. Anyway, if you launch the terminal app on your mac you can delete the problem files (for free). Check the discussion at: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=221591
  24. The trailmaps at http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/ are free and do a pretty good job in the areas they cover.
  25. Many of the maps at http://www.gpsfiledepot.com have a mac format file posted. If the one you're interested in doesn't its not too hard to find a helpful soul who will do the conversion.
