  1. There is also the fact that when you don't give battery life any thought you use (and enjoy) your GPS more.
  2. I don't know enough about USA Photomap to say what's similar, but its no problem to overlay tracks and points on photos with MacGPS Pro, GPSy or TopoDraw.
  3. Is there a way to turn this off in the map setup page? In the Map Setup menu on the GPSmap 76S the tide stations can be turned off, but that is the kind of thing that seems to change from one generation to the next for no apparent reason.
  4. Well, my card is fully loaded with maps. Does this mean that the Icon should not be there? No, it would mean that my brain wasn't entirely in gear. The tide station database is permanent in some units, apparently the 60cx is one of them, I knew the 76S was. Having had the chance to fire mine up last night it does show a Herod Point tide prediction station at that location.
  5. I only have a 76S, but the icon sounds like a tide station. If so, it would likely be part of the marine POI file which goes away if you load maps.
  6. The same page where you would download the upgrade has a list of changes: http://www.garmin.com/support/agree.jsp?id=87 There are very worthwhile changes between 2.09 and 2.14, if you don't have any other need for a cable at least borrow or fake one.

  8. Garmin has posted MapSource software version 6.10.0.3 Beta Changes made from version 6.10.0.2 Beta to 6.10.0.3 Beta: * Changes to solve several problems when selecting track points using the new track draw tools or the track points list on the Track Dialog. * Change to solve a problem when undoing a deletion of track points in the track points list on the Track Dialog. * Change so that copying a complete track in one instance of MapSource will not append that track to the selected track in a separate instance of MapSource. * Change so that when viewing the track properties after selecting a specific track point on the map, the previously selected track point will be selected and visible in the track points list. * Change so that the color of tracks received from certain units (such as the Quest 2) won?t be set to black and will use the correct default color. Tracks that have already been received from these units will need to be manually changed. * Change to solve a problem viewing the properties of route waypoints in Dutch MapSource. * Change to increase the precision displayed in the proximity setting on the Waypoint Dialog. * Change to solve a problem running MapSource on specific Windows locales, such as Chinese (Hong Kong S.A.R), Chinese (Macau S.A.R), and Arabic (U.A.E). * Changes to make creating error reports more robust. * Change to remember the portrait or landscape printer setting when doing a print preview. and WebUpdater software version 2.3.0
  9. re: the review comparing the Garmin GA25 and Gilsson, I don't have one of the older Garmins to compare them to, but just worked with what I had available. I did compare them to an older Lowe and Titan which are BNC rather than MCX. since those two couldn't be used on the same receiver and are less commonly available i didn't include them in the review, but the results when using them on my GPS V were similar.
  10. it is currently showing from southern wyoming. while its position has shifted, i would think you'd still be able to see it from either mass or mich.
  11. It might be related to the fact that they never actually had an update for the 600 anyway, just another link to the 500 update. The page describing the update is still there.
  12. two comments: older firmware versions are generally available at: http://www.gpsinformation.org/perry/agree.html currently the waas system is in a state of flux. one of the changes in the beta firmware being discussed is an attempt to make the transition more manageable, but while new satellites are being tested and old ones are being moved you should expect unusual behaviour.
  13. Not all of the Mac apps work with Garmin USB, and the VistaC doesn't do serial. You could download the beta version of GPSy and see if it will talk to the VistaC or not. I have several of the applications, but no USB Garmins to check with.
  14. I am also reminded that I have a USB (bus powered) external drive which will run fine connected to my desktop, but requires an external power supply when connected to my laptop. Probably at least some of the discussion has to do with just how powered different USB ports really are.

  22. go to a spot where you can see most of the way to the ocean and point your gps toward west southwest with the nose slightly down (maybe 5-10 degrees below horizontal). let it aquire satellites and it should cycle through the numbers above 32 two at a time. when 35 is on the list watch for an outline indicating that it is receiving some information and adjust the position of your receiver to get maximum signal strength for 35. it may take several times through the entire list, but it should eventually get a lock. if you have access to a re-radiating external antenna it will speed things up noticeably.
