  1. Jamie Z, I have a question because I'm considering upgrading to an E500. Can you upload more that 200 caches to the optional sd card? Or edit and delete the caches from the sd card? While the card is in the gos? Thanks, -Jeffr
  2. No, in the one example he posted, the last post was a DNF (well, a note, but a DNF nonetheless) documenting and photographing the area, which he described as trashed by hurricane Ivan, and suggesting the owner have a check. And it looked pretty trashed to me. I can possibly wrap my mind around an Xtreme Samaritan who spends his cache days hunting someone else's cache that's probably not there, but I can't imagine there are many of them on the trail. I understand not wanting to do a physical check of a remote cache on the strength of one report. I've blown off checking my neighborhood 1/1 on the strength of a newbie's DNF. But if the owner can't be arsed to write an email, there are really not any high horses to get up upon here. No, In his first post he said that he could "personally have never gone to hunt them, but they are close by so conceivably I could." His from Mechanicsburg, Pa. That's near the Ohio/ Pa. border. There is no way in hell that hurricane Ivan could have trashed this cache. Not in Mechanicsburg, Pa anyways.
  3. According to you in your first post, nobody reported a problem with the cach. Only you that you have no interest in finding it even though it is relatively close to you. Why don't you take this as a challenge to yourself to find it. And if you can't find it them log it DNF. Wow, that sounds like a grand idea. I challenge you to find it. -Jeff
  4. SGM & MRS D, Wow. You've got 10 strips on your arm below your rank. If I'm not mistaken, that's 40 years. Right?. One strip for each 4 years right? I was in the navy 5 years I only got one of those strips. Well listen. My five years might mean nothing to most but I want to thank you for serving all of your years for all of us. Thank you very much. With much respect, -Jeff
  5. members only caches may help to alleviate these kind of problems. Just a thought. -Jeff
  6. Magellan meridian Yellow. Yeah I know. They don't even make these any more. But as far as I can tell, they're the same as the meridian Gold with the exception that my yellow has a 2MB basemap verses the golds 16 MB base map. I do have the SD memory slot which I do take advantage of. Because of the memory slot, the card I have in it lets me keep maps of Florida, Georgia, South and North Carolina and part of Virgina on it. So the 2MB base map is really meaningless to me. I use the TOPO software with my GPSr. I love the size of the screen. I only wish the Explorist series had a screen of simular size. I jet ski a lot and keep my unit (I mean my GPS unit) attached to my jet ski when cruising around the lake. Lake Lanier in Atlanta. -Jeff
  7. If you don't really need the altimeter, you can get the Explorist 500 for only $279. Click here for that deal. -Jeff
  8. Five years in the US Navy. 1982-1985 Was assigned to the USS Guam LPH-9 amphibious assult ship. Went to Grenada (operation Urgent Fury). Picked up nose cone pieces from the space shuttle Challenger explosion. Made a lot of good friendships during that time. The ship was decomissioned in 1998. Read the USS Guams time line here if interested. -Jeff
  9. If I'm not mistaken, the higher end models of Garmin GPSr have the Quad antenna. The GPS Map 60 series as well as the GPS Map 76 series all have quad-helix antennas. Why? I don't know But the following is taken right from Garmins web site for the GPS Map 60 series and the GPS Map 76 series WAAS GPS receiver with accuracy to 10 feet in North America; built-in quad-helix antenna for better satellite reception Seems like the quad is the one to have. But my opinion is to get the gps that fits your own typical usage. -Jeff
  10. Thanks guys. I appreciate the info. -Jeff
  11. Well then here is another question. How far is 2000 track points? 1 mile, 5 miles, 500 feet? Thanks, -Jeff
  12. Maybe someone with explorist experience can help me with this question about track points. I pulled this off of the magellan web site: Store up to 5 track log files, each with 2000 track-points to the internal memory and store an unlimited amount of track log files to optional SD cards, to easily find your way to your favorite spot again and again. My question is can you also store more than 2,000 track points per log if storing them to the SD card? Thanks, -Jeff
  13. If you have a Battery Zone in your area, they have them for about $25. http://batteryzone.com/modelinfo.tpl?_fid=53466
  14. This is the link you need: http://search.ebay.com/snn5595_W0QQfrppZ50...QQpqryZSNN5595B -Jeff
  15. With the Explorist series of GPSr being able to track "up to" 14 satellites and the rest of the Magellans, Garmins, etc only being able to track "up to" 12 satellites. Is there any real difference in reception or performance between the 14 sats verses the 12 sats? Thanks, -Jeff
  16. What are the real purposes of you purchaseing a gps in the first place? If it's primary use is to go geocaching I would say not to pay the extra for the compass. After all, you can always buy a real good magnetic compass for less than $20. And they don't need batteries. If you are into hiking and plotting maps and visual courses of travel, the maybe the gps with compass feature is for you. But then again, if thats for you, then you would be foolish not to get and use a real magnetic compass. Like I said, If all you plan on doing is caching, you don't need it. On the other hand, if you like really neat and cool gadgets get the gps with the compass. After all, it's what you want that really counts. Did I really confufuse you? -Jeff

  18. Wow, They have rattle snakes in PA.?
  19. Can't believe I just put this comment in writing, then went out to my jeep Monday morning and found one of my windows knifed open. Nothing stolen, not the case of CDs I'd left on the backseat easily within reach (very unusual for me to do that), not the CD player, nothing! dadgum Mountainmudbug, That just stinks. I have a Jeep also. I never lock the doors on it in fear that someone just might slice the soft top. These vandals just P@ me off.
  20. I would normaly just leave the snakes alone also except this was a poisonous copper head in my back yard next to the kids play ground. Didn't want to take the chance of the kids or their friends stumbling into this critter.
  21. I was just thinkng about a time not to long ago when I found a full grown Copper Head in my back yard. He's taking a dirt nap now but it got me to thinking about running into snakes while out Geocaching. I have not run into any while GCing but I always "try" to be on the look out for them. What kind of snakes, if any, have you run into while stomping through the woods looking for the almighty cache? What precautions, if any, do you take? Any pics of what you've seen? -Jeff GpsJeep
  22. Hi Mopar, I didn't mean to ruffel the feathers. Star, I hope I didn't offend you. It just really ticks me off when I hear about folks who are victims of crimes. Fortunately nothing happend to you physicaly and that you are safe. I wish everybody well. Be safe. Lock up and hide your belongings. -Jeff
  23. Yes, all people are responsible for their actions. Including people who choose to take what is not theirs. Because a kid leaves his bike out by street does <b>not</b> make it right or acceptable for someone to steel the bike. A law biding person respects other peoples property. Stop making criminals out to be victims! Edit: changed HTML to BBcode. I'm not making criminals out to be the victim. No way. If you find the criminal, string his butt up. Leaving something out does not make it acceptable or right for someone to come along and steal it. But if your dumb enough to leave, say, a $100 bill on your curb by your mailbox over night and somebody walking along the street while your asleep finds your hundred bucks and swipes it. Your right, he's the criminal, the bad guy. And I say send his butt to jail if you can find him. But ultimately you, the victim, are now out of a hundred bucks because you gave opportunity for someone who is not a decent person to take something of value from you. No way does it make it right, but you left opportunity for some creep to take advantage of you. Nobody likes it. And it really feels horrible to be taken advantage of. I know because it has happened to me. Do your best to remove the opportunity and you'll lessen your chances of getting ripped off. The truth hurts. You give a rat the opportunity to steal the cheese and he will. Put the cheese away where the rat can't find it and chances are good you'll have something to put on your sandwich for lunch. Is that something you don't understand?
  24. My logic is NOT that the bad guy couldn't help himself because the victim asked for it. My logic is that you do your best NOT to give these opportunities to the creeps that will be more than happy to take advantage of you. Your right, normal people such as yourself, myself, and hopefully everybody on this forum who sees an unlocked car, won't steal it. If we see a person on a dark street late at night, we don't rob them. If we see a GPS on a dashboard we don't smash a window and grab it. But not everybody is like this. That is WHY we (you, me, everybody) has to do what we can to try and prevent ourselves from becoming victims. I'm not sticking up for the bad guy. No way. You or I wouldn't break into a car to steal something. But somebody else out there would. As I said earlier, I've replaced a lot of car windows that were busted out because a thief saw something that he wanted so he smashed and grabbed. If you leave things in your car, make sure you completely hide them out of sight. Sure, nothing is foolproof but you still need to be responsible by not presenting such opportunities to a would be thief. I'm not here to start fights with anyone. I'm just saying thieves will steal anything out of your car whether you think there valuable or not. Remove a thief's opportunity and your less likely to become a victim. Do you agree or dissagree? enough said. -Jeff
  25. Sorry, Jeff, gotta disagree with ya on that statement. I don't care WHAT you leave in your car, the "fault" still lies with the vermin that broke in. Please, you're trying to say that if some mutant breaks into my car to steal a pack of smokes it's my fault? Why? Social pressure got him adicted to nicotine, so now society must support his habit? I think not. This is the same line of thinking that says it's woman's fault for getting raped because she's too pretty/sexy/whatever. No, badguys are defective human beings, there is nothing you can do except elimate the threat if it comes down to you or them. Ok yes. You got me there. The fault is on the thief. However, I do believe the fault lies partially on the vehicle owner. This isn't the 1930's when no one had to really worry too much about bad people or break-ins. It is truely unfortunate that we live in a society where break-ins and thievery are, unfortunately, a commom occurance. More common than you realize. And when you leave stuff out in the open, your just asking for trouble. That's just the cold hard facts. What the hell is that all about? Your comparing someone getting thier car broken in with rape? And you also believe that only pretty or sexy girls get raped? If you think the two are the same' date=' your really sick. Rapists are sickos. They don't just prey on the pretty girls. People are responsible for thier actions. Or at least they should be. When your a kid and you leave your bike up by the street or in front of your neighbors house and sometime over night it get's stolen sure it may be the fault of the bad kid who stole it. But arn't you partially responsible for not putting it away? It would be wonderful if we all didn't have to worry about the bad things and the bad people that plague our society. But you know what? They are out there. And if we don't assume reponsibility for ourselves, we may just become the victims. That whole thing you mentioned about rape is way off base? Only pretty girls get raped. Where the hell did you get that from? All I'm saying is that if you don't put things [b']away and out of sight[/b] when you leave your vehicle, you may be asking for trouble. That won't entirely eliminate a break-in but it will sure put the odds in your favor. Be responsible. Star, I'm really sorry it happened to you. Not much else I can say. -Jeff
