  1. I guess what I'm saying/asking is this. If I find a Geocoin in a cache somewhere and it's not a hitch hiker on a travelbug and it does not have a tracking number on it then it's safe to assume that it's a collectible for anyone that finds it and not meant for traveling? Is this correct? Geocoin on a travelbug= meant to travel Geocoing with a tracking number on it= meant to travel Geocoin by itself= Collectible for those that find one? I wouldn't want to steal something that doesn't belong to me and if it's meant to travel, by all means I would like to keep it moving along. Correct yes? I'll have to admit, seeing these geocoins on the various websites are indeed preety darn cool. I wouldn't mind collecting them. I just want to make sure I don't collect the wrong ones. -Jeff
  2. Although I've never found a Geocoin I can see how they can be attractive to everyone. My question is this. When is a Geocoin NOT a collectible? I read how lots of cachers like to collect and trade these Geocoins and I imagine that some may have large collections but are they for collecting or are they for tracking or both. Is it OK to collect a Geocoin that has a tracking number on it? I'm assuming not but other than it being somthing that's cool to collect I don't really understand why you would go through the expense in minting these little gems just to track them when you can buy and track travel bugs. I'm just curious that's all. Thanks, -Jeff
  3. I'm pretty sure that the GPSMAP 60C and the GPSMAP 60Cs always had the quad-helix antenna. The only difference in reception would be that the CX and the CSX now take advantage of the new SiRFstar chipset for increased sensitivity.
  4. Delorme has been making GPS tracking devices for some time. Just not one with a screen. They are also taking advantage of the new SiRFstar II chipset in their most recent gps. Hopefully they will also use it in their new hand held. It only makes sense. Read about it here: http://delorme.com/professional/earthmate/info.asp Only time will tell. -Jeff
  5. I've always kept around 400 cache waypoints in my gps that I'd update about once a month with pocket queries. And I've always kept my gps in the Jeep or my work van and turned on. Therefor not necessarily out on a geocache mission but when out driving around and a Geocache waypoint appears on my GPS screen and if I have a few (LOL) moments, I'll look for the cache. Unfortunately, caching never takes a few moments I dont specifically camp or drive to far away places for a Geocach mission but when I do camp or go on vacation I'll run a search for caches in the area. Some friends and myself went camping in the Chatahoochee National Forest for a few days and spent some time searching for bench marks in the area. I also attach my GPSr to my Jet Ski when I go out to the lakes around here. I tell my wife it's to find caches and she insits I have it on the Ski so I don't get lost. Whenever I do go on a caching mission, I usually just do it locally. There are tons of parks and wooded areas near where I live all loaded with caches. -Jeff
  6. I replied to an other post in this forum about this link but it's well worth reading. New Delorme GPSr to become available someting in 2006 along with new Delorme Topo software. http://gpstracklog.typepad.com/gps_tracklo...view_delor.html http://www.directionsmag.com/press.release...&id=10884&trv=1 http://www.gpsreview.net/delorme-announces...gh-gps-devices/ http://www.spacenewsfeed.co.uk/2005/9January2005_41.html You'll find more link on a google search for Earthmate GPS PN-20 As if we don't have enough to think about with the new Magellans and Garmins. Edited to add mor links. -Jeff
  7. I found the link. Quite interesting. http://gpstracklog.typepad.com/gps_tracklo...view_delor.html -Jeff
  8. Not that this will help you any. Actually it won't. But I read somewhere and I thought I read about it in in these forums along with a link, but I can't find the page or the link to the article. Delorme was in the process of manufacturing a handheld GPSr. Not that that initself is a big deal but what is a big deal is that youl'll be able to load the Delorme Topo maps into it. That's huge because for the outdoor person who really enjoys hiking the trails, they'll all be there. Not only the trails and lakes but much better Topo information than what Magellan and Garmin can ever hope to offer. If I can find the link to the article I'l post it here. -Jeff
  9. Are you referring to the Explorist 600 or the Explorist XL? I'm not aware of an XL600 -Jeff
  10. I just received the 2006 Bass Pro fishing Master catelog a few days ago and on page 444 they have the new Garmin "X" models. So if it's in the catelog, it's just a matter of being patient until they arrive. -Jeff
  11. Been without a gps noe for about 3 months or so. Didn't really want to spend the 400-500 bucks for the gps I really want just yet. I got the Meridian Gold. Just won the bid on ebay for $127.50 This one will replace the meridian yellow (aka green) that was stolen from the Jeep. Yep, I'm excited about it. Will probably upgrade to the 60CX after it becomes released and I read some of the reviews. Well, I had to tell somebody. My wife just quite understand what all the comotion is all about. -Jeff
  12. Ok. I know this might be a dumb question to a lot of you but what exactly is waypoint projection? Thanks, -Jeff
  13. The XL, according to magellan web site, has area calculation to find the distance between three or more points of interest. Is that the same as projection? -Jeff
  14. Use Heavy duty velcro. In the warmer months I am always out on the lake with my Jet Ski and I've used velcro to attach my GPS. I'm not at al familiar with Snow Mobiles but if you have a somewhat flat surface between you and he handle bars try using heavy duty velco. It works well with my jet ski. Good Luck, -Jeff
  15. In either Delorme or National Geographic topo software, when creating routes such as of a known trail, and when you upload that route of a know trail to your GPSr, what will it look like on the GPSr? Will it look like line of some sort following the contour of the trail or will it look like a bunch of waypoints following the contour of the trail. The reson I ask is because on the delorme and NG websites they mention that you can create your trails and upload the to your Gpsr. I'm just wanting to know what they look like on the GPSr after they're uploaded. Does anybody have experience or is familiar with this? Thanks, -Jeff
  16. Maybe I'm just not as high tech as some of you are. When I travel, it's usually on the Interstate system. I'm in Atlanta. I locate the Interstate on the Geocach maps. Then I zoom the map out a little to cover more area on the map. After that, I just "Pan" along the Interstate and visually locate the caches that way. When I find something that looks good to me I just download the way point. You can use the mapquest page that is on the cache page as well to determin if the cache is near an exit ramp. Pretty simple actually. Last year I drove from Atlanta to Baltimore and found eight caches along the way. Hope this helps. -Jeff
  17. I was just at Bass Pro to take a look at these XL's. I haven't actually seen one up close. Only on the web. Very impressive looking. The screen is awsome. Seeing that the size of the XL is a good bit larger than the rest of the Explorist series, I wonder if it has a larger patch antenna. Would it really matter? Hey fishDog, Compared to your Sport Track, how do you like or dislike the weight difference or the feel of it? It feels heavier than the Meridian I use to have. -Jeff
  18. This is good to hear. The battery issue isn't really an issue with me. I'd prefer the AA's anyway. Does anybody else have some feedback on this Explorist XL? -Jeff
  19. C'mon Cannondale Express, I'm sure you must have been taught to be responsible for your own toys. LOL
  20. Has anybody here purchased the Explorist XL yet? How do you like it? I'm torn between what I want to get. ExploristXL, the 500 or wait until maybe the Garmin 60CX comes out. Just don't know. -Jeff
  21. A new Garmin 60CX http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=114790 -Jeff
  22. Anika, I'm deeply sorry to hear of your loss. I pray that you find comfort in knowing that he is in a better place. -Jeff
