  1. Luckily we live in the middle of the country so no more than 7 hours (apart from Bank Holidays ) from anywhere in the country and two hours from east or west coasts!
  2. So tell us what your favourite cache was/is. We are definitely not qualified to offer an opinion but some of you caching veterans must be able to point to some great caches. This might be something else that Deego could add to his site? The Hokesters
  3. There is an iQue on ebay listed at £400 starting price and buy it now for £550 (Item number: 3095005889). Apparantly this would cost you £700 new? This thread might be of interest too - Here. The Hokesters
  4. I suppose any palm or pocket PC with integral battery which is (or can be with a GPS jacket) GPS enabled will work in this way however you will probably find the battery life of this system is sorely lacking compared to a dedicated handheld. I have an iPaq and did consider getting the GPS kit to go with it but battery life for Pocket PC is poor at best. Can't talk about Palm as I have never had one. Anyone know what the battery life is for the Garmin iQue 3600? IMHO its a dedicated GPSr handheld (which can still be connected to a PDA if you want) and a good stock of rechargables which are now very affordable. No doubt dedicated GPSrs with integral chargeable batteries will onto the market in the near future as demand for the units grow. The Hokesters
  5. Sounds like a good resource and would probably increase traffic to the 'special' caches. The Hokesters...
  6. Dude, Are you going to drop all these items off at caches 'after' the event??? The Hokesters
  7. We've never had a problem yet (only done 6 caches ) but I have a great idea should we ever get into a sticky situation - the Geko 301 that we have is the same size and similar colour to most modern mobile phones. If I come stumbling out of the bushes into the path of some muggles I will simply raise the Geko to my ear and say in a loud exasperated voice 'No Mum, tiddles is definitely not out here'! Should work for most places locally but might be a bit tricky out in the middle of nowhere! The Hokesters
  8. Just so everyone knows - the Geko 301 (not sure about other models) has a settable option for either Alkaline or NiHm! The Hokesters
  9. Do all new caches get listed on Thursday night? It seems that they only get listed after the notification goes out our last note was Thursday night at 11pm. Trying to beat everyone to our FTF
  10. Any news on this? I would just be interested in how geeky it might make us look The Hokesters
  11. From a complete novices point of view - we are currenlty avoiding anything other than trad caches. We will attempt Multi's when we are a bit more confident but I think it is useful when the owners put an approximate completion time. This allows you better planning of your time. The Hokesters
  12. Thanks Chadwick Chasers - I was going to pop to Springfields as the guy at Yeomans in Derby tipped me off that they had a good stock. That's after I got stung for £4.00 for a large but excellent condition Ammo box at an independant surplus dealer in Beeston. I also popped to Anchor Supplies at the Cattle Market in Nottingham. They have a ton of ammo boxes from £3.50 and are available on their website www.anchorsupplies.com. They also have a depot in Ripley, Derbyshire. If you order online I suggest asking for a good condition box only as some of the ones I saw were v.rusty! Cheers The Hokesters
  13. You obviously never get far enough from your Landy WildTrekker The Hokesters
  14. We did over 12 miles last weekend doing 'Wash your Woolies', 'Beyond Peter's Stone' (we took a wrong turn) and 'Hipper Sick'. The Hokesters
  15. AAA's are no problem unfortunately my Kameleon Remote control turned me on to 'em and that doesn't just eat batteries it skins 'em, cooks 'em and feasts on 'em! However 850mAh is all you need Thanks for the clue on why the AA's are in a lot of caches and that they are "GPSr Food" that was the answer I was looking for. By the way you can only get 2300mAh in AA and above so us Geko owners are still in the dark - don't touch that backlight! Look out for GP NiMh batteries they are better than Uniross and usually a lot cheaper. Your best bet is to look in Yellow Pages for Battery Wholesalers. I pay less than £1 per 850mAh AAA battery and have a stock of 12. That will last any 48 hour stint with my Geko!!! The Hokesters
  16. I heard a chap talking about Geocaching on a local radio channel. Looked up www.geocaching.com and was hooked
  17. Make sure you get the highest mAh that you can find and use the NiMh I am on 850mAh at the moment and they last for 9 hours when new which is Garmin's Alkaline usage figure. The Hokesters
  18. Is it something we don't know about? Is there some sort of Alkaline conspiracy? Why is it that so many caches start off with a pack of AA batteries in the cache? We have a Garmin Geko so start planting some AAA batteries you sneeky cache hiding types! The Hokesters
  19. Thanks to all for your replies. I tried www.topozone.com first but you have to pay $50 for a membership to get your elevation details . I am very pleased with my Geko which is probably the first usable GPS which is small enough to mount on handlebars. Well done Garmin! Simesh
  20. I have tried searching the forum but haven't found an answer to my question so I hope it is not an overly repeated one. I have just got my hands on a Garmin Geko 301 and would like to set up the Altimeter however I have no idea how to find out my 'true elevation'? Help! Simesh
