  1. I think I am doing it wrong. Do I have to wait for it to become a PQ and then it is sent to me as an email? If so how long do I have to wait, or can I go into Geocheing.com to find it? I have made a note of 'Basecamp' if I can't open with my unzip file. Yes I will put it into the card when I find or get it. Thanks guys for your patience.
  2. OK thanks for the replies. I made a small PQ for an area in Essex. It did the job. I did note that it should have been saved as a .gpx as the line was highlighted, but it still saved it to .loc I tried 3 times but still it saved as a .loc Any idea what I did wrong? This is all a new learning curve for me as I have not needed any of this in the past.
  3. Well I just made a PQ of a small area of Essex, and saved the pages to my PC. They are a .loc file. So now how do I get them to my Etrex? Do I just drag and drop?
  4. I already have the Talkytoaster toaster map on my Etrex 20. But I now wonder if there is available a UK map with all the caches on it. Or an app where I can load all the UK caches to the Talkytoaster map? Some time back There was this function where I could put it on my Tom Tom. It was so handy as when driving around I would get a warning bleep that a cache was near. I have just spent the last hour loading caches to my Etrex from some places that i visit, from the Geocheing.com map. This would do the job, but what if I were in an area where there was no wifi signal and there were caches to be found. One place on the east coast that I go to during the summer. I now see that there a loads of caches about. It was some of these that I loaded this morning. But there are many more and I would need some more hours to load them. When I first started caching I was the only one that put some caches in this area, but as I was not in the area full time I could not maintain them. So I had to archive them after a couple of years. Apart from the fact they did not get many visits.
  5. Thanks Sassamb. That is what I wanted to do and you have told me how. There is so much that can be done with this thing, and I have a lot to learn. I am finding new things every time I play with it. The manual is not very clever. At least it's not in Chinglish
  6. Help, a question. I have read most of the manual but can't find the answer. I would like to use the compas mode whilst heading for the cache, like I did with my Etrex yellow. So how can I replace the odometer and or the elevation for distance to the cache when in the compass function?
  7. I gave the etrex 20 an outing this morning and did a couple of easy local caches, it found them easily. I would question the accuracy of the CO GPS as my etrex put me a few feet away from the actual cache. I did a test later and marked a waypoint, and then returned following the path. I was 2 foot out. Also the boot up time is amazing. I have 3 bars on it as I sit here in doors in my lounge. Window facing north. Great bit of kit.
  8. The maps are now being seen. All is good. Now what's next I ask myself.
  9. Thanks you are a gem. No wonder it was not being seen. I will have to reformat it as it showed as just 'fat'I think I have sused out most of the other functions. It's a bit more complicated than my old yellow etrex.
  10. I thought that I would start a new thread as I no longer need to refer to the 'Vista'. I hope that it is OK to do this. I have downloaded the British isle maps from the Talkytoaster, un zipped them, and currently loading them to the micro SD card in the Etrex 20. I would like conformation that it is Ok to do this and will be accessible when I go to maps? Ain't this exciting...
  11. Thank you. I will now try and put the hair back in that I pulled out over that.
  12. OK guys. I am downloading the maps from "talkytoaster" at the present time. 63% done and 21 minutes to go. Even with my super fast fibre broadband it is slow at the other end. Graculus. I have read that paperless caching in the past. Most helpful. And another thing. I can't calibrate the compass (do I need to?). When I follow the instructions and go compass, menu, there is no calibrate in the menu. Good fun.
  13. I have had a play with it and already loaded a few caches. When I unpacked the box I Lund that there was no lanyard which I thought that there should be. No big deal though, as I had a spare that I "borrowed" from another device. I need to get some maps on it now. This is my next job. Any advice on what free ones? I have also found a 2gig memory card that I have installed in the etrex.
  14. Blimy!!! What service. I ordered the Etrex 20 at approx 1400hrs yesterday, and it has just arrived at 0925 this morning. I am now going to open the box
  15. £131.94 incl post from Amazon. That was the best I found so I have ordered it. Plus I already had an account at Amazon. I should get it in a couple of days. So stand by for questions.
  16. Hello Hornet. (Brian?)Long time no meet. And it was your turn to buy the beer. Yes there is an addon for the iPad that allows one to plug in USB and SD cards. (got one). As for taking the iPad caching... I don't think so. Plus I don't have 3G on mine. Still open for options. Peter actually, but no worries. My turn to buy the beer?? Surely not..... Interesting sounding addon, I must check it out. Ah Brian was the other one. Here you go it is one of these.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-1-CAMERA-CONNECTION-KIT-CARD-READER-IPAD-2-3-SD-TF-USB-/270955953301?pt=UK_iPad_Tablet_Accessories&hash=item3f163bbc95
  17. I was made late for taking the memsarb out. I had found the caches in a park some distance from home. As I returned to the car in plenty of time, I could not find the car keys. Urrrrg! I turned out my pockets, emptied my caching bag of bits, but no keys. I had lost them. But where? I started to retrace my steps and I realised that they could be any where in the grass in the field or wood where the caches were. As I was looking around a bush where one of the caches were hidden, there were two women comming towards me along the path. As they got near one asked me. "have you lost any keys?" "yes" I answered "my car keys". What a relief as she dangled them in front of me. She told me that she had found them by the gate to the park. Was that lucky or what? Yes I was late due to caching.
  18. Thanks for that, very helpful. After a headache browse, I think the Etrex 20 would suit my needs. Any pros and cons on this?
  19. I did once try a Ipaq and Bluetooth RX with the maps ect, but 1. It was too fiddely. 2. Difficult to see in sunlight. I suppose a compass is an option as I always carry one in my bag. Altimeter, not needed. I will look at the Etrex 30 as an option. Cost... I am spending the kids inheritance on other things so that is not really an option.

  21. Ding. For you. I thought that it was going to be a difficult one.
  22. Thanks for your quick reply. So it means that the Vista is off my list. And the search is on again for a suitable device that I can go paperless with. Any recommendations? The market has many choices. Price has to be considered in my case.
  23. I am thinking that it is about time I retired my 10 year old yellow etrex. It is still working OK (found me 3 caches last week) but it cannot keep up with the modern trend. Also I cannot load caches to it from my PC or iPad as the connecting cable is a serial one, and we are USB. So I am looking at the Etrex vista HCX, and advice from any users. I read that with it I can go 'paperless' and also load maps. This is all I need. Is there a way I can load caches from my iPad? So pros and cons about the vista HCX. Thanks.
  24. Staying with the nautical theme. Where in London can you see Nelsons fleet?
