  1. OK guys, I need some more help. How do I erase the found caches from that page on the Etrex 20?
  2. This is to early for me to understand what this post/ rant is all about. I would be obliged if anyone could explain it to me in cor-blimy English. Or do I really need to know this?
  3. I have used a Tom Tom for cacheing. I had an original one and here in the UK, one of the groups produced an app that allowed you to install all the caches on the TT. When you were in the area of a cache, you would get a beep. So if possible it allowed you to park up and go look for it. I found quite a few with it. I also had at the time an Etrex yellow.
  4. Not in bag.. My dog. Telescopic walking stick Boots or wellys In bag..gardening gloves Colop inked stamp Etrex 20 and Etrex yellow. Cards and sticky labels with avitar and details of me. Spare batteries Compass Magnifying glass Bag of swaps Pens and pencil Water for dog and self Bananas also for dog and self Packamac Phone Insect repellant In summer Camera At times a porter to carry this lot.
  5. Moi aussi Eh? I no speeky the lingo. (G6ITD)
  6. I can't hike any more. The mind is willing but the body is not. So a few caches located in a local park is fine for me. Where I live NE London, there are quite a few like this. So I am happy. I can still ride a bike, so amongst my planed outings there is a set that I can do. They are along the tow path of a local canal. Bit of a déjà view, as I once placed a series along the same place. I feel sure that there are others in the same situation as myself. So caches placed within the 0.1 mile of each other is OK in our books.
  7. You may not have realized this but you just described an example virtual cache. A railing in a populated area lacking a lump of magnetic metal. We seem to be heading there, but I assure you, metal railings without nanos still are far too common to have any Wow appeal. Any thing metal, including railings, if not under constant observation could be stolen for scrap in the UK at present. So they could be a rare item in the future for a 'Vertual' .
  8. I would rather go to find a virtual with a 'WOW' than a 'Nano' cache that turns out to be a lump of magnetic metal stuck on railings in a populated area. This I went and found one recently. No log to sign and it was so easy to spot. No 'WOW' on this.
  9. I would say NO. Although I am have premium membership. It can be easy for a group of kids to have their bit of fun by going around trashing caches. This is the way things are nowadays. Just a minority I hope.
  10. Hi and welcome. As I am way down south I can't help in that way. That is not so bad if you can go out on your own to find caches. You will soon get the idea of how it's done. I believe many started that way. Well I did for quite a while. Even now I go out on my own with just my dog.
  11. This may help you! http://www.follow-the-arrow.co.uk/resources/paperless.html#showmehow Chris Graculus Volunteer UK Reviewer for geocaching.com UK Geocaching Information & Resources website www.follow-the-arrow.co.uk Geocaching.com Knowledge Books What Sassamb and I were discussing in the last posts was not about pocket querys, but there was not a lot of information for the Garmin Etrex 20, in its manual for the things that it can do that I am finding out about the hard way.
  12. I am the owner of a virtual. GC22E5 It was first listed 16th October 2001. It has had 896 visits and last visited a few days ago. It is in what I believed an interesting part of London that not many visitors to London would have on the normal tour. As many of the 'finders' have stated that they would not have known of of this place if not as a cache. As proof of their visit there are questions that must be answered about it. Is this enough proof that virtuals should be allowed?
  13. I have only once met a cacher in the field. We had both just parked in the same car park. I suppose we spotted each othe by the YELLOW ETREX that we both had in our hands. We then went off to find the cache that was in the area.
  14. I don't think it was on the COs property. If you have read the cache details and the clue then you would realise this. I shal be watching this cache as it is very local to me. Put it another way then. If the CO has had permission for this cache and the Land/wall owner is content to have the wall 'damaged', so be it . I still think that (possible) quicker answers to your questions would be to email the CO but I hope watching it proves to tell you what you need to know. Edited to add.. Ive just had another look at the whole page and there is no evidence to suggest that this cache is or isn't on the CO's property/land. You would have to have visited the cache site to understand the situation. Then you would see the wall, the vertical holes, and the so called 'green'. If you can, view it through Google earth and zoom in. You can just make out the metal seat. If you compair the cache page map and GE you will then see that the cache icon on the page is to the NW on as I said on someone's drive. Which is paved. This could be the COs residence but there is nowhere to hide a cache of the description ie: 35mm film case. The cache details tell that it is in one of the vertical holes. ( Cut off fence posts). Just remember that this is just another cache and I only wanted to point out as the title of this thread.
  15. I went out to day to attempt to find a couple that were local. I found the first after a wander around the area. My Etrex 20 said I was 6ft fom the cache, but it was another 30ft away. I spotted the obvious spot by how it was left by the previous finder. The second cache I did not find, as I was running out of time. But I will try again in the near future. At the alledged spot, there were many objects of the hint. So I suppose if every cache is an easy find, it could become boring.
  16. I think I worded it wrong. What I mean is that when looking at Google earth, it gives me an idea of the terrain and a a rough idea of where that cache could be.But when a cache has been placed it could help to check and compair co-ords befor listing.
  17. It have been mentioned in other threads, about the accuracy of the co-ords of a cache. I like I feel sure others have gone to a cache location verified by the GPS, to find that the cache when found is some yards away. OK this is I suppose part of the game to search. But when in dense undergrowth with brambles and nettles, and having ploughed your way through them getting to the location. You cannot believe that anyone would hide a cache in this spot. You are normaly right, as after a search you find the cache a short distance away in a much more friendly environment. I have recently been playing with 'Google earth'. I find that when searching for a cache location before leaving home. I get a more accurate idea of the supposed cache location. Now could this work the other way in when placing a cache? With GE zoomed in and on the pointer on where the cache has been placed, you would see the co-ords and compair them to your GPS readings. I wonder if this could be more accurate than some of the older GPS readings?e If so would it make life that much easyer?
  18. I don't think it was on the COs property. If you have read the cache details and the clue then you would realise this. I shal be watching this cache as it is very local to me.
  19. All points noted. I should explain that the 'green' is in fact an island in a not very busy road junction. With houses on all sides. There is a path to make crossing the road a short cut. Half way is this metal seat. In front of the seat I a small triangle of a grass area. There was once it seems a fence as in the ground are holes that are cut off metal posts. Most of these were full of water or soil. Apart from the fact that some of the cutoffs were jagged and rusty it was difficult to put my fingers into these holes. The 'wall' surrounding this part of the green is only about 12-18 inches high. In my opinion, not a good place for a cache.
  20. Should a person be allowed to place a cache before they have even found any? I ask this as today I went looking for one that I could not find. In fact this cach has never been found, but I was only the second person to try. When I checked the profile of the cache owner, I see that apart from not finding any caches, they have only joined us last month. GC3JA6M. This should have been an easy one as the clues were a give-away when at the supposed location. The co-ords on my GPS showed a place on someone's drive so even their readings were out. In my opinion I believe experience should be gained before placing caches.
  21. Done that, and now they are in the card and seen. Removed from main memory. Thanks again.
  22. Sorted... I had to put the .gpx file in the memory of the etrex, and now I can see the files. I wonder why it was not seen on the card as that is where the tasty toaster maps are and that is seen and working. Thunder, lightning, and hail stones here at present. So there is much else one can do.
  23. Right. I got the email and the .zip file auto opened to the .gpx file 245KB. I drag and dropped onto the card in the gps. But I can't see them. Back to the drawing board or play some more.
