  3. that's a great idea! I'll have to see what I can shake loose for raffle items ... great mind run in similar directions - brokenwing's looking for event cache input, too!
  4. what are the chances that we'd both post a thread like this on the same day? sorry that I didn't see yours first -- mine's called "event cache mixers" and it did get a post ... I also have some info I got from cache-u-nuts in Utah that I wll send you via the Web site e-mail -- if I can figure it out

  6. We're planning to host a potluck event cache barbecue about mid-May to meet some of the other folks and families who have hunted and hidden caches in our area. I've checked some other threads and have determined how to publicize it. Of course we'll have food, and we're thinking of asking each cacher to donate a cache trinket for a new cache (or two, depending on donations!) that we would then hide so others could go hunt it the next weekend or so. We're having it in a city park with a shelter, rest rooms, playground equipment and plenty of parking available. Any ideas on what else we can do to help break the ice, besides eat?
  7. I always read the hint before I go, because we have to travel so far to find a cache these days -- easily a couple hours' drive one way. And I usually try to find an area where we can try to find three or four, so then I end up getting myself confused about which hunt goes with which cache. But since I'm usually not able to come back for a second try for the better part of a year, I REALLY want to find it. (And I get frustrated easily, which doesn't help at all.)
  8. Actually, I archived a cache today for none of these reasons! It was a Christmas ornament cache, and while I considered leaving it to celebrate Christmas in July, right now it's March, the snow is melting, the park is going to get busy and therefore the cache is more likely to be stumbled upon by accident. I'm thinking I'll place it again, but in a different spot, for next Christmas. I think all of the reasons you've listed are valid for archiving a cache (although if I had the problem of too many visitors, I'd be selfish and bask in the glory of all the "thanks for the great cache" emails I'd receive!). And there's a cache or two I'd like to place out of town this summer, and I really don't want to have to think about a city park cache. I placed it for Christmas, the log comments showed it achieved what I wanted it to and I'm happy with that ... so, it's done for now. That you even started this thread shows that you're a responsible and thoughtful cacher (not that there was any doubt

  10. The first thing I ever took from a cache was a copy of "Life's Little Instruction Book, Volume II" from the Teton Pass Cache last fall. I still have it, and like others I actually still have most of the things I've traded for.
  11. In fact that's exactly what happened -- my old post counts didn't transfer to the new forums, besides which my old forum name wasn't the same as my caching name, so when the chance came to unite my fragmented personalities, I snatched it! And it's not about the numbers anyway, right? Looks like Drive-in has about two weeks' experience on me, and I have three or four finds on him ... as of today, anyway ... numbers do change. But now I have two posts!

  13. "Raising money" and "income" are not the same things, guys. I think it's interesting that we expect geocaching.com to survive on $50,000 a year ... doesn't seem like much money to pay for equipment and bandwidth and still hire someone to tend the database. Besides which, Jeremy does a LOT more than tend.
