  1. Take a look at this thread This shows how to load maps http://www.ukgcpodcast.com/gsak-fsg-macro/ And this shows how to colour them in. http://www.djinnsplace.co.uk/gsak/CacheStat
  2. I've had both problems - 1. not seeing the gpx files and 2. locking up on startup. This is what I do - YMMV 1. delete all gpx files on unit and redownload from Groundspeak extract to temp floder plug in gps drop gpx files into folder on sd card safely remove hardware - stop the usb mass storage device (stops both at same time) leave for a couple of mins then unplug. Put garmin in window turn on and wait until you get full strength from satellites then look for the nearest caches and read descriptions- should now work. 2. remove batteries (PIA) wait 30 sec reinsert and switch on. BTW make sure the firmware is up to date - I belive there may be a problem with the newest version I'm using v3.82
  3. You only need to drop them in the /garmin/gpx folder on the GPX or /garmin/gpx on your SD card no need to drop in both. Just overwrite as required if its the same area, delete as required if several areas.
  4. I've made a page that gives you info on how to colour your map for FindStatGen @ CacheStats HTH Steve
  5. I logged a cache and added a needs maintenance due to the contents being wet. This was the 4th mention of a waterlogged cache and 2nd NM. 10 days later and another wet log mentioned I posted a needs archiving - later that day the owner fixed the cache. I wonder why What I do hate is when some one cant find a cache and posts a needs maintenance.
  6. No, but we can see a trackable out side the front door.
  7. Lets be honest the coin was just forgotten about. Very true.
  8. I put out our first two TB' last week both have been picked up, one has been dropped but not logged into the cache. The other has been taken but not logged out of the original cache. I'll put some more out this coming week perhaps these will be better.
  9. I was thinking - making an assumption that the majority of phone users would not be regular cachers - may be starting out, using a cool new feature of their phone; only having to pay a small amount for their app. As such would not be members. Indeed I don't know what the percentage of cachers become PM's quickly - I/we took about a year when we upgraded to a paperless type of GPS, now, some phones have the paperless capability built in; but that doesn't mean they will immediately join as a PM.
  10. We were caching in the Midlands last week and there were loads of PM's there but at home in SWales there seem to be far fewer. I would think that PM would stop the Phone users dead, as there is a required outlay to buy a GPS.
  11. Did one the other day where the coordinates were for the middle of a busy junction. The clue was specific and made it obvious where the cache would be. Only thing was it wasn't where it should have been. It was about 20 ft to the left. Ive had several DNF's posted from obvious phone users adamant that the cache has gone, next day someone else finds it. Also a lot of these phone cachers seem to drop away when they cant find many caches, probably due to inaccurate phones. - They are just using the free(ish) capabilities of the phone.
  12. Took a quick peek - how did you set up the UK maps in GSAK? I just get the world or Europe maps. I've used the Ukgeocachers one but its a faff to set-up.
  13. I did THIS WALK last october and got a couple of caches http://coord.info/GC180DK and http://coord.info/GC1JNPB You can include a couple of trigs if you want and more caches if you feel the need. Map and gpx available if required. Photos
  14. ooh works a treat, like the cache filter option will have to play with that. This isn't the only problem I've been having but nearly the most annoying - a couple of months ago it would not even load some gpx file and upgraded to cure that. Is it the goundspeak format that's changing to cause the irregular but major problems that I keep encountering?
  15. Just did a master reset and now seems to be working Downloaded updater will see if there's an update available. http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/Version...dater%20only%29
  16. For the last 3 weekends when I load my GPX files onto my Garmin Oregon 300 I cannot see any of the descriptions associated with the page, although all the caches are there and I can navigate to the cache selected. when I look at the downloaded page the Oregon locks up and I have to remove the batteries to get it running again ( still no descriptions and it'll lock up again when checking) If I check the down loaded gpx files on my PC I can see the descriptions are there in full. Has anyone else had this problem?
  17. We had a really frustrating day not caching yesterday. About two months ago I became a premium member of Groundspeak so I could download Pocket Queries to my Oregon 300 when I went to visit my daughter in the Midlands. Yesterday we went to Tintern for the day, enjoying the sunshine and intending to do a few caches in a different area. Only to find that the gps would only show a no geocaches found message. This had also happened in Birmingham which I put it down to my error. I checked the flash card in my phone and the 2 gpx files were there but the Oregon could not read them! Well to say I was like a bear with 2 sore heads was an understatement. I later found that the Oregon would not read certain files from the flash card but would read them from the internal memory. It appears on checking on the Garmin website that they have an upgrade to fix this known problem. By this time I was weeping and wailing at the bl**dy computer. Upgraded the Oregon and low and behold problem solved (humph) Moral of the story – technology only works perfectly until some one finds a problem, look at Windows to see how many updates are constantly produced, and how often you have to update a virus checker to keep it safe. Remember to update your GPS regularly.
  18. This is a log from yesterday (May 15) at one of my caches- Gateway - "is it fudge" GC1YYXW "easy cache to find but fellow cachers beware as this one is very close to the road much passing traffic which with my mooching around court the attention of a passing police man who done a stop and search on me to much delight and laughter from my friend ( thanks mate! ) and having to tell the coppa what i was really up to i was happy to find the cache to prove my innocence " One was also watching on February 19 but didn't intervene. It made me giggle when I read the notification .
  19. After doing Whitecastle GCW2JE without a OS map yesterday, I’d like to get some OS maps on my Oregon300 (currently using OSM and Topo) I have Memory Map so getting the required maps at 25k are ok. I know that they will not work natively and will require some fudging. Is there an Idiots guide available and once I put a waypoint in will it display on that OS map?
  20. As others have said, you need to place the link into your description. you need to make the link using html code. the easiest way would be to use some Wisywig Html Editor when making the page. KompoZer is an easy one to use. For small links other than the ones provided try Tinyurl
  21. I don't normally buy expensive boots, shoes ,clothes for caching / walking. My last pair of shoes were a pair of hitec waterproof walking trainers that lasted 600miles plus now wearing regata walking trainers I wear these every where, in all but the most wet/damp conditions. If I know its going to be wet muddy or boggy I wear Hitec leather boots. Look around and most of all try them on before buying. I have to agree with the McArthur Glen outlets - good for trespass and regata shops and Go Outdoors for the special offers.
  22. The cheap ones from pound shops usually let in water - Especially the pink/red seal ones as the tabs don't pull on to the locking bits enough to make the seal. - You pay for what you get. Remember these containers have to contend with our worst/best weather 365. You don't want to have to continually replace sodden logbooks. Djinnsplace
  23. 1. I'm in the process of setting up an easy cache and bonus on a cycle path - what's the minimum distance between caches - both will be mine, published at the same time; nobody else's around. (Yet) 2. If I try to publish a cache and there's another one in the immediate area (within the minimum distance) am I automatically informed via the act of making the submission page or would the reviewer inform me that I cant have the cache there when trying to publish the cache? I have a tendency to check out the locations and fill in a web page (without publishing) first before physically placing the cache. Thanks
