  1. BTW, I noticed this log entry on a Springfield geocache page:

    quote:
    June 22 by ________ (27 found)

A hot day to spend in the woods, but was worth the trip. The actual cache was about 20 feet North from where the listed coordinates said it was. This is based on the readings from 2 top of the line Garmin GPS units....

Isn't it nice to see that an expert with a zero-error GPSr visited the geocache! Riiiight! Luckily this was by an out-of-town visitor. Still, it's pretty snotty.

For what it's worth, I took a boatload of averages with two GPSr's on the ones I placed this weekend. I'm not going to claim that the coordinates are dead on, but I gave it a shot. For the ones that had large margins of error, I gave detailed descriptions. So no whining! icon_wink.gif

  3. Well, I did it. In spite of United's best efforts to keep me out of Springfield, I came, I saw, and I conquered. That is, I found all seven of the geocaches in Sangamon County. Well, now there are ten.

I hope that you'll enjoy my new geocaches. I was only able to grab one Travel Bug on my visit, but I left five. So PLEASE take good care of them. Most have goals and need to move out of the area sooner than later. "Kate's Bug" is in Urban Bounty and needs to get to PA by Christmas.

I'll look forward to reading your log entries, so go find them!

(I was at The Alamo [formerly Kane's] on Saturday night. Saw a good band--Spongeworthy. I made a brief stop at The Barrelhead on Sunday evening.)

  4. Well, the response has been pretty quiet. If anyone wants to meet up, I'll be out and about in the Springfield area. all weekend. Fire off an e-mail to me. Thanks to GoodHunting for dropping off that Travel Bug. I'll pick it up and will be placing several more in the area. I would really like to grab several from Springfield, so if you've got 'em, stick them in a geocache!

  5. Gee, now a person with common sense gets labeled "P/C". Neato. I guess the nice folks in this recent news story couldn't be accused of either one:

    quote:

As 7-year-old Nelson Tapia sat on a couch Thursday afternoon, a family friend (an adult) picked up a loaded 12-gauge shotgun, pointed it at the boy from about 3feet away and pumped a shell into the gun's chamber, Syracuse police said.

The gun went off. The shot - small, BB-sized projectiles - tore into the boy's chest. He died moments later from massive internal injuries. Three other children under the age of 12 and several adults were in the room when the gun fired, police said.

I abbreviated my original bug sheet considerably by indicating on the bug tag that the finder could go to www.markwell.us and go to the FAQ. On that page are detailed instructions on how to log a travel bug. Now the tag is about 3" square, much more managable than the 4.25" x 5.5" one that I originally did.

Well, the Travel Bug tags have a URL on them. The problem is that people just don't go to these URLs to see what to do with a Travel Bug. The key to our Sheet is that it gives them the information right then and there.

We will probably be seeing a link to our sheet or our site on geocaching.com in the near future.

I've been printing out these sheets for other people's Travel Bugs as I move them from geocache to geocache.

  8. After looking at the map, I came to that realization.

I'll post something here next week, re: an informal get-together. It won't be an event cache, just a date/time to meet at a pub.

While I've got someone reading this, if there are any Travel Bugs in Central IL that need to go west, drop them in a geocache in Sangamon County and I'll grab them when I am in town.

  9. For a moment, I thought that this was going to be interesting. Then I got to this:

My find:hide ratio is 13:1 and my hides get great reviews. Gary, don't bring down your own thread by name-calling.

  10. The Washington State Geocaching Association has a new feature that just might help. It's the Travel Bug Information Sheet generator. Using a simple, online form you can create and print an information sheet that can travel with your bug. It is a double-sided mini-doc that explains just how to log YOUR Travel Bug. The design is based on a similar sheet by Markwell. While I can't guarantee it will save your TB or even that it will print out exactly the way you want, I think you'll be pleased.

  12. Wow, this topic really gone all over the place! A partial answer to the original question...

All of the geoccache pages used to have "Copyright© (Grounded Inc.) 2001..." at the bottom and there was a link to that bait page. So, yes, I guess it was there for the bots mining for spam addresses.

The geocache pages no longer have that link anymore.
