  1. true that this is a game, but it is not a game like chess or football, where you compete against others. It is more like solitaire or Bejewelled, where you are challenging only yourself. The rules are set up by the CO. "Here are the coordinates, go find my cache" is a very basic way to play, sometimes there is more challenge such as multi-caches or puzzles. Logging your find online is a way to indicate you have completed the task. Those that log bogus Found-its are akin to those who play solitaire with all the cards faced up. They cheat nobody but themselves.
  2. I get the same result. Seems a bug has entered the system. Edit: Using Firefox 13.0.1, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit SP1
  3. I would suggest not using Superglue. Superglue works best on porous materials and probably would be even worse on the flat plastic and magnets than the original adhesive did. I would suggest getting some epoxy to hold the magnets on, you will need to wait overnight for it to dry, but the hold will be far better. You could also try QuickSteel http://www.walmart.com/ip/Blue-Magic-QuikSteel-Epoxy-Putty-2-oz/17134766 It will set fairly quickly. Overnight is still recommended, but it could be great for fast repairs should a magnet fall off in the field.
  4. One time I worked really hard to find an Obama cache and when I did I was penalized/taxed 30 smileys and those smileys were distributed among the arm chair cachers of the U.S. Look on the bright side. Those with the most smilies will now have to pitch in and maintain our caches for us. Something I am looking forward to since I can no longer afford to duck tape my Gladware containers anymore.
  5. What happened to that guy? I mean the guy who really placed those caches, a well-known forum poster? Well, I suppose. But the first thing that jumped out at me was in the first sentence or two of every cache page, the subjects are referred to as "various mythological deities." This of course implies the are imaginary, and not real. Not really. The meaning of "myth" has changed over the years, but originally it referred to traditional stories involving some kind of deity or supernatural being, usually believed by the culture to be true, but not necessarily. Merriam-Webster.com defines Myth as a : a usually traditional story of ostensibly historical events that serves to unfold part of the world view of a people or explain a practice, belief, or natural phenomenon b : parable, allegory
  6. Check to see if there are any events in your area. That would be the best place to meet up with local geocachers.
  7. 155 feet is a lot. Either you are using an older iPhone without a GPSr or you are not getting a satellite lock. Smartphones will use both the satellites as well as cell tower triangulation to get a fix. If you lose a lock, it will rely only on towers and can be 155 feet or more off. Try installing the free version of the MotionX GPS app. Go to the main menu and select "My Position" from the choices. The app will let you know if you have a true satellite lock, and how good of a lock you have. I use to use an iPod with GPSr attachment and would always be 30' at the most, and I'm sure my GPSr attachment was nowhere near as accurate as an iPhone 4g.
  8. The arrow points to the cache, assuming you have a good satellite lock.
  9. The map has changed. You need to click on "View Larger Map".
  10. Groundspeak app is probably going to be what works best for you. If you want a more general purpose, non-geocaching specific app, I would recommend MotionX. If you decide to become a premium member, I would also recommend looking into Geosphere, it will let you organize and filter pocket queries in many ways the official app wont.
  11. Thanks for the answer. Turns out I did receive an EMail of the original grab from the Geocache. Probably missed it due to being about the time I returned home from Holidays.
  12. Another thought. Your post here is dated at 2am on Monday. You might try setting the date for Monday instead of Sunday since time zone differences may be creating problems with the PQ generation.
  13. On the main page http://www.geocaching.com/pocket/default.aspx What does it show in Last Generated(PST)? It could be stuck at the back of a long queue. Sometimes creating a whole new PQ can help with that problem. I have had on a couple of rare occasions had PQs take a couple of days to generate, brand new PQs usually will be put closer to the front of the queue, but doesn't seem to be 100% of the case.
  14. I have a travel bug TB32RH6 that ended up in a puzzle cache in Germany for a couple of years. About 6 months ago, another cacher had grabbed the bug and has been moving it from cache to cache ever since. I haven't gotten any e-mails about it. Is it because the cacher is just dipping the bug? I don't even recall getting an email about the original grab (which I'm sure I'd notice since the bug had been trapped for so long).
  15. The PN-60 keeps its .gpx files under EM_USERMAPS\waypoints directory (DELORME_SD\waypoints if you are storing the files on the SD card). If you click on Settings on the GPSr, then to "Connect to computer..", then choose "Open Internal Drive" under the "When Connected" Option (Or "Open SD Card" if storing on the SD card), you can now drag-n-drop the gpx files directly onto the GPSr. To actually see the gpx file on the device, go to either the "Waypoint" page or "Geocaches" page, click the Menu button once, then navigate to "File..", "Open..", then choose the name of the gpx file you want to view. You might notice a problem with this method. You can only view 1 file at a time, they are not combined in any way. This does have the advantage that you can store as many gpx files as you have memory and select the one you wish to view, giving you potentially hundreds of thousands of geocaches. Other devices combine the gpx files into one, and usually has a limit of around 2000 - 10000 caches on the device. But you also notice that the child waypoints are stored in a separate gpx file, so you can have either caches or waypoints viewable at a time, not both. The solution would be to combine the child waypoints with the geocaches into one single gpx file. The simplest method would be to use the free Cache Register program. It will automatically download, combine, and transfer to your PN-60 any pocket queries you have done. It will also make updating and cleaning up PQs easier. If, for some reason, you don't want to take that route, GSAK will work. Just create a new database, load your PQ into that, then export the PQ into a single gpx file which contains both the caches and child waypoints.
  16. Try this. Turn off 3G and WiFi, and make sure GPSr is on. Run a GPS mapping software, such as Motion-X, until the phone gets a lock (could take a while). Now turn back on 3G and WiFi if you want. See if the accuracy improves. Could be possible that during your move, the GPSr lost track of the satellites and is relying on cell tower triangulation to determine your location which can be up to 100 meters off.
  17. be sure to look at "Pending Logs" on the phone and make sure none are waiting to be sent. Next, go to the main Geocaching.com page online and click "Your Profile, Field Notes" from the menu bar at top. If any field notes appear, just click on "Log cache" to the right of each field note and it will take you to the log page with all the fields filled out for you.
  18. I've found the solution to my problem. Under settings/Location and Security, you need to turn off Use Wireless Networks so the location data the cartridge is recieving is coming from only the GPSr.
  19. Because not everyone gets around to logging their caches the day they find it? I would hate to take a 5 mile hike to find a currently active cache, just to find that when I get home, I can't log it because it was archived between when I found it and when I logged it.
  20. One problem with Android is that you can seem to close an app, but it is actually still running in the background. To make sure all apps are closed, you need to hold the Home button until the Recent menu pops up, then click on "Task Manager." Alternatively, you can click on "Task Manager" under Applications, or click on the "Active Applications" widget if you have it installed. If any apps are still running, you can click on "Exit" to end that single app, or click on "Exit All" to close all of them at once. Note that this won't close any services that are running in the background. To do that, you need to click on Menu button, then Settings, then Applications, then Running Services. As you can see, Geocaching.com does not leave any services running in the background, but you may discover other apps that do which you may want to stop.
  21. Haven't notice problems like that here in the central part of Florida. Most hides are spot on (within 5') of where my GPSr takes me. A few are about 5-20', very rarely does one take me further than that. Could it be that 9 out of 10 caches that you search for are from the same person or group? If so, you might want to avoid hides from them.
  22. The Delorme PN-40 and Delorme PN-60 will put different PQs into different files. You just load the one you want at the moment. Only problem is that if you just drag-n-drop the PQs onto the Delorme, the waypoints(parking, entrance, etc...) get loaded into a different file than the geocaches and you can only have one open at a time. The workaround is to either use GSAK to combine the two into one .gpx file, or use the free Cache Register program which will automatically download, combine, and upload to your device, any PQs which are available. Edit: Are the PQs stored on an SD card on the Dakota 20? If so, you can have different cards with different PQs on them and just switch as needed.
  23. If you don't want to validate a new email address, or you can't on your phone, most email providers will let you set up a rule to forward messages to your phone's email. I have this rule set up under filters on GMail Matches: subject:([GEO] Notify:) Do this: Forward to 1234567890@mycarrier.com <-replace this with your sms#
  24. Just downloaded the Whereyougo app for android. Went to do a Wherigo that I created to test the app. Started the cartridge, but the location would not update. Discovered that the GPS was off in the app. So I turned it on. Now I get a message that says "Sorry, you cannot play this cartridge in simulation mode." This is a Wherigo I had created about a year ago http://www.Wherigo.com/cartridge/details.aspx?CGUID=0a74ffe7-c802-48fa-bc80-46aa8299ba87 I have played it through with the iPhone Wherigo app, and several others have played it through with Androids and Garmins, so I know it is not the cartridge at fault. I have a Samsung Exhibit II 4G, os 2.3.5. The Exhibit II is actually a Galaxy W, relabeled for T-Mobile.
  25. I think it is a server problem. You're not the only one with problems today, nor is it limited to the iPhone. Try again after about 30 minutes or so and see if things improve.
