  1. i just did it this morning! drove 45 minutes to bag a FTF simply on the chance that a shiny new WA geocoin might still be unfound. sure enough! i've also gone after specific TB's if i thought i might help them out, etc.. and moun10bike coins are incredibly uncommon around here. it's almost like they're allergic to the insides of ammo cans...... whatever gets you out there doing something!
  2. i'll be sending payment out this weekend if i don't get sidetracked.... thanks for the updates!
  3. since starting geocaching, i've rediscovered i'm fond of air.. air is good! go get some!!
  4. i'm still waiting for the bisons for my first GC multi, but for my Terracaches i've placed, i've used WAAS averaging anywhere from 3-5 minutes, and gone back and checked. in the areas where i've maintained a WAAS signal for the period of averaging, there's usually no difference in coords. if there's no lock, i'll let my gpsr sit for a couple of minutes, mark it, then go back and do that a couple of times. average them out when i get home, and it seems to be working. in areas of really bad coverage (canyon, etc) i just make sure to note it, and give a better clue to compensate. if i'm going to put out a cache, i'd like it to be found...
  5. found while walking my dog. how much of a hurry can you be in when it's only 5 letters??
  6. gee, you'd think someone would have mentioned golf balls by now, or is no one going to admit to that HERE either???
  7. "i go where the satellites tell me to." well, we do..... don't forget your foil hattery!!!
  8. hey everyone. only been involved with this for a couple of months now, and i'm not having any issues with my basic gpsr (yet), but am starting to think of what features i'd like in the next one. the 2 i'm currently leaning toward would be the garmin vista or vista c (i like the altimeter feature and memory, as well as the size and screen) or the sportrak pro or topo. i'm already familiar with the magellan layout, etc.. and i'm pretty pleased with the reception characteristics. the only real differences between the 2 brands that i care about are reception, and how quickly they average out. the menus seem cooler looking on the garmins, but i'd like to hear some pro/cons from other users. i've been caching with some folks that had garmins, haven't bumped into any other magellan users yet, so all i have to go by is my personal experiences. let er rip!!
  9. i've got a basic sportrak and have noticed the same thing on the screen that displays your current coordinates. WAAS= no EPE readout. at the base of that screen i've currently got it showing a compass heading, but you can cycle between that and UTM or other info, maybe i just need to change a setting. i've found that WAAS averaged coordinates will tend to be dead on for me though, at a couple of benchmarks i've found and within 5 feet of a few caches. i tend to believe they're close after a couple of minutes. works for me!!
  10. i think i could work something out with ammo boxes, we've got some good cheap local sources. i might even pre-load a few for prizes... hmmmmm i think i need to scout some locations quick. i don't think i want more than 2 in the area, and one multi would probably be best, just pointing around the area.. thanks for the suggestions!
  11. anyone think i'd get more response by offering some ammo cans semi-pre loaded as participation prizes? what other types of incentives have worked for people? besides good karma!!
  12. good points, the other volunteer things i mentioned aren't planned for any specific day, just tasks that were brought up in discussions with the property manager, that i'd also like to help out with. i will be posting a cache this week for the area, and will make the cache description include my plans to help out. thinking about it a bit more, using the CITO day in April makes a lot of sense, both for a better response, and to help shine some good light on Geocaching.com, etc... gives me plenty of time to plan it more effectively as well. keep the suggestions coming!
  13. the size used for one ounce silver rounds should work just fine for you. i am pretty sure they're about the same diameter. try a local coin shop, the people running those are generally helpful for anything any kind of coin related, and may even have some weird old stuff laying around you could use. most of my local coin shops have buckets of foreign stuff they don't sort through, picked up with collections. you just never know!
  14. Hi everyone. Just got finished scoping out an area i'd like to help out a bit, and after discussions with the project manager for the area and his positive response to cache placement,, etc... i'd like to encourage CITO for this area, and possibly setup an event. as i am still really new to this hobby, and haven't been to any cito events, i don't know much about them, my main concern is what kind of turnout to expect? would i be better off just placing a lot of CITO bags in the cache and encourage their use? how many members in the Tacoma area show up for these kinds of events? parts of this area have been used as mini drop sites for garbage for awhile, the area overall is in great shape, and includes an oak savannah and a wetlands, both in the process of being protected as a low-impact area. it's still open to the public (!) and looking for help. there are a lot of volunteer opportunities, including mapping out invasive plants species via gps, blackberry removal, trail construction and rehab, tree planting, etc... this area is home to a huge variety of bird species, and a fairly important area for a lot of critters. i'm going to be taking part in a lot of these actions, but could use some help. so.... let me know what has worked for you!!! thanks in advance. I'll be less vague about location after placing the cache. it doesn't have one yet, because i'm guessing no one else has done the research. the guy in charge is super cool towards this so i want to do it right.
  15. nice job. i just had a good experience with a land manager too. i'm surprised by positive responses. that's just sad. oh well, i'll take a yes any day!! good work!
  16. Hi everyone. Just got finished scoping out an area i'd like to help out a bit, and after discussions with the project manager for the area and his positive response to cache placement,, etc... i'd like to encourage CITO for this area, and possibly setup an event. as i am still really new to this hobby, and haven't been to any cito events, i don't know much about them, my main concern is what kind of turnout to expect? i'll be posting this in my regional boards as well, but was wondering what suggestions could be made by the community at large to help increase the response i'm looking for? parts of this area have been used as mini drop sites for garbage for awhile, the area overall is in great shape, and includes an oak savannah and a wetlands, both in the process of being protected as a low-impact area. there are a lot of volunteer opportunities, including mapping out invasive plants species via gps, tagging trees and locating them, blackberry removal, trail construction and rehab, tree planting, etc... this area is home to a huge variety of bird species, and a fairly important area for a lot of critters. i'm going to be taking part in a lot of these actions, but could use some help. so.... let me know what has worked for you!!! thanks in advance.
  17. i pay here and on terracaching.com, don't use GSAK yet, as my basic GPS can't really take advantage of downloading everything, and i don't really mind inputting stuff by hand. what would be nice would be having the cache pages available paperless, but i abandoned pda's a while back, and might have to get another one now.. nothing more frustrating than transposing cache descriptions, and wondering why nothing matches up at the site you're at.... makes for great moments when you find one and realize what you've done though.. when i upgrade my gpsr i'm sure i'll figure out gsak, and it's usefulness. i like geocaching, and will support it because it introduced me to my new favorite thing, that actually motivated me to get active again. i like the new look too.
  18. sorry about the delay, sent a mail. after checking the thread, i'm guessing it's no longer available. let me know if it is. thanks.
  19. wow. definitely have to keep an eye out for these. i really like the wooden nickels you've got out there too! how many are you getting in the initial order? (trade availability question....)
  20. hi kerm! payment will be paypalled to you tonight. i am out of town and don't have my paypal info with me. will check in later and email you.. j
  21. i've been collecting silver for awhile and have yet to see any 1 oz rounds that are blanked, even on one side. most mints will put their unique tag on it somewhere. you could melt them down and just recast i suppose.... i'm working on using old cull silver coins to recast for miscellaneous little silver things. i like the homemade stuff though, geotoken wise.
  22. cav scout has got really cool nickels!! i've got one! (thanks! nice tat by the way.) i'm betting all my wife's scrapbooking stuff could come in handy for some of this. i'm sure embossing would have to work on them just fine. i'll let everyone know the results when i get a chance. also check out www.ituit.com for a pretty cheap deal on random stock designs, etc.. it came up as the top suggestion in my google search sidebar..
  23. i've only managed to happen across 1 canada geocoin so far, and i actually released it back in the wild!! cool looking coins though. i would be willing to buy any area coin with "23" on it. just that, not at the end of a number. i'm still trying to figure out where to get wooden nickels made up. i have a moun10bike and cav scout wooden nickel available. please pm or email me if you've got a 23 coin!
  24. i'm in for 5 when they show up.
