  1. nothing to see here, move along, no plans to take over the world one tupperware container at a time....
  2. Ooo Ooo - I know, he's one of a group that always wanted to be ... a Lumberjack Leaping from tree to tree, as they float down the mighty rivers of British Columbia. The Giant Redwood. The Larch. The Fir! The mighty Scots Pine! The lofty flowering Cherry! The plucky little Apsen! The limping Roo tree of Nigeria. The towering Wattle of Aldershot! The Maidenhead Weeping Water Plant! The naughty Leicestershire Flashing Oak! The flatulent Elm of West Ruislip! The Quercus Maximus Bamber Gascoigni! The Epigillus! The Barter Hughius Greenus! With my best buddy by my side, we'd sing! Sing! Sing! [singing] I'm a lumberjack, and I'm okay. I sleep all night and I work all day. just a step to the left... and a jump to the right!!! what a weird remix the two songs would make..... i just read through an issue of backpacker, their 2005 gear guide. they had 2 pages of gps reviews, and didn't seem to be bagging on the varied uses for them. they even (gasp!) admitted their mappers used them!! so, i'm guessing someone is just trying to poke fun.... now about the winsome Vilhelmina, and where are THOSE pics???
  3. i like a decent hike, so far haven't been really thrilled with micros, with the exception of one, found at night.. major sense of accomplishment for that one!! i just like finding new cool areas to wander around in, and prefer to be able to hunt in peace, rather than under the watchful eyes of those who have no idea why i'm walking in circles looking like some crazed dope addict who lost his crack pipe under a bush or in the brickwork.... so... i'll attempt micros at some point, but there are so many other things for me to look for, they're pretty low on my list. give me a huge park or mountain to climb and i'm all over it... .02
  4. i think i'd take some tips from James and make the cache a little less mysterious. i don't know how that cache stacks up against the norm for your area, but around here (wa. state) it would have been gone after, probably based just on your brief description. parking coordinates are always good. FTF bait definitely gets some interest. trail info, scenic descriptions, etc.. always a good thing. you may want to retry the description, and see what you get for a response. couldn't hurt!
  5. if it's a couple miles one way, i'd consider that significant, and i don't usually just go out and grab those on a whim, i tend to plan a trip for them, unless it's in town and just a long walk through a park or something. hike to me denotes elevation gain being involved or other types of terrain issues. in town? make it a couple miles on a flat trail, not a big deal. i prefer destination type hikes though. a nice fat cache at the end of a good hike, nothing better..
  6. ebay would be a nice cheap place to pick up used equip. i've never had problems shipping other stuff to the uk without extra VAT issues, etc.. shipped gifts...
  7. as long as the mileage stays the same in my van, i don't care. i paid way more for gas living in canada, if i plan a trip to cache outside my work/home route, i make sure to check for all the caches close enough for me to hike to for the day. this spring through fall, i'm definitely going to be involving the motorcycle.. all day on $10!!! almost makes me wanna get a dualsport and then i can bypass the 4x4!
  8. i think i like the second one a bit better. after having my car broken into in FRONT OF MY HOUSE.. the last thing i need to do is let some hoodlum know exactly how many hours i'm going to be traipsing off in the woods.. but i'm just bitter... nice job and thanks for posting them!!
  9. if you are looking for rated caches, there are other sites that will accomodate you. the nice thing about geocaching.com is the HUGE variety that you have available to you. the best filter here is a bit of research. usually i find for myself, that if i read through enough of the cache log, or check over the map (if it's an area i'm familiar with) i'll generally be spot on about my enjoyment of the cache find. the other nice thing is to just filter by cache size. (personally don't like micros. oh well.) that alone keeps me from wondering what exactly the point of the parking lot was. keep poking around, you may just find what you're looking for..
  10. i guess this is something new for me to watch out for. i've never been attacked by one yet.. go figure..
  11. fwiw, as a us citizen, once married to a canadian, i've NEVER once been asked to show my passport going into or coming from canada. the only time i ever had to show it was when dealing with immigration, etc.. i had a friend with an eccentric hiking father who constantly ended up on the wrong side of the border peak bagging. would call his wife to come get him, never had an issue at the border. mind you this was way way pre 9/11..
  12. true, but USGS is generally interpreted as United States Geological Survey. at least by me. Vest works good, trash bag works good. Looking like you belong where you are doing what you're doing? Even better. Being able to talk the talk if necessary is fairly helpful as well, and has gained me access to some really cool, non-public spots. (National Map Corps kicks a**!!!) Just being able to convince people you're harmless is enough to open up a lot of opportunities, behind the scenes tours, insider info about some neat spot, fishing holes, etc... i was trying to explain geocaching to my dad recently, and he brought up the similarities between gaining access to fishing holes and the types of places we like to stick caches. now i just need to get him one so he can find me some cool spots to visit when i'm down home!!!
  13. some places will only refund on uncrushed containers. dunno why..
  14. Event has been added to the list for April 16th in Lakewood. time for event will be from about 9 until 12-1 ish, depending on when people decide to start leaving. i didn't realize there was a Federal Way effort going on that day as well. I think that one is for the afternoon though. I'm bringing donuts!!!! event is Oakey Dokey Corral cleanup thanks for the helpful suggestions!
  15. there wouldn't be any S&H charges for something like that around here, we have plenty of local sources for ammo boxes....
  16. I found one a while back that if i was off trail, i would have missed. neat cache, but dense forest, bad signal, multiple spots to hide ABOVE ground. if you're not expecting it, which you shouldn't be by the rules on this site, it's kind of aggravating. fortunately for my find, you have to be on the trail or you can miss it. if your stride is too long, you could miss it!! and no, i don't want to add a shovel to my caching backpack supplies.. ever..
  17. *anxiously waiting for the first log to mention the faint sounds of banjos heard before tearing a** outa there!!!*
  18. NEW EVENT NOW LISTED! Finally got it up and posted after getting the ok from the property coordinator. CITO listing is found at the Oakey Dokey Corral Cleanup! There will be a multi-stage Geocache up and running by March 7, and I will be placing some temporary caches on the day of the event for attendees. I've also got some prizes and prize support from local businesses in the works. I will add any new info here or on the cache page as it comes up. Thanks for all the suggestions I've received!
  19. as soon as i find the right tree, i'm putting one in it. you won't be able to get it if you've got a fear of heights, i'm hoping to find one overhanging a nice canyone or ravine the rapelling thing sounds interesting too, as i've already got a climbing harness. i haven't done anything crazy yet, besides 10 mile hikes in snow, with tennis shoes, etc.. but it has only been 2 months.. and there is nothing worse than nasty goo in a stump.. eck...
  20. does the map used to get him to these natural areas count towards the tech no-no he espouses?? or does he walk in from his mud hut by the river bank, 3 days walk away... can't we all just get along??? i am glad to see he altered his viewpoint somewhat, but the whole "my agenda is more important than yours" thing, ack.... when he goes into his Sacred Nature rituals, are they CITO'ing on the way out? are they using flint and steel to light the sweetgrass smudge?
  21. heck i traded for a cool rock the other day! the rock was just some polished something or other, but the kid that put it in wrapped it carefully, taped it up, and wrote a great note.. and after opening it up, i had to trade for it!! luckily, i carry cool rocks too. i've left opal and emerald and faceted stones behind in caches, usually for some goofy thing my wife or kids will like. the hikes i've been going on lately are a bit past the threshold of the sane folks i live with, so they just smile and nod at me when i get home and show them what i found. i'm working on some sig items now, but for kid stuff, i've bought out the entire stock of glow in the dark stretchy frogs from every dollar store in town. along with silly putty, etc.. i tend to leave stuff only for kids. i'm after sig items for myself.. i think most adults tend to as well.
  22. when adding an http://www.xxxxx address in my signature, after posting, i can click the link, but the text where the link lives says "visit link" how do you tag a link properly in the sig bar? bbc code or html? any help appreciated.
  23. i just found a binder full of waterlogged Magic:The Gathering cards in the woods yesterday. fortunately for my kid, not completely waterlogged! about $50 or so in salvageable cards, and the rest are going to ebay. worth the trip through the woods!! other than that, i've picked up a couple of geocoins that were cool finds.
  24. i've only been here for 2 months, and by no means do i consider myself expert. for myself though, i now know i really prefer traditional caches, am not very fond of urban micros, like we're not conspicuous enough wandering in circles everywhere else we go? i need to be doing this in full view of an entire office building now??? i also find that i prefer decent hikes, which lead to nice views or interesting places, instead of that convenient spot by the road to pull off and grab the micro stuck to a sign. if others like to hunt those, great! that's why it's a fun game. everyone gets to play their way!! but it's also what led me to check out terracaching.com and see what they offer. generally it's more of what i like to go find. but the funny thing is, i've ended up finding out that there's much more to geocaching than i'd seen by only checking on available caches in my town, and local stuff. as i'm forced to go farther to find their caches due to smaller numbers available, i'm finding there's tons of geocaches in those places or on the way to them, that are just as fun and worthwhile for me to hunt down. so, i don't have to give up or beatdown one site over another, i just have a larger menu to pick from. i haven't yet found enough caches by any one particular hider to like/dislike their style either, but have scratched my head at what could possibly have compelled someone to place a couple of them. another issue i have with micros is poor maintenance. if you only leave enough room in something for tiny strips of paper, at least do some occasional maintenance on it!!! that's my rant for the day.
