  1. i've got a "voodoo golf ball" i made up specifically for one of my caches, in the hopes that anyone thinking of dropping off garbage, just might see it first, get a laugh, and think twice "ahhhh, already one worthless chewed up golf ball here.. hmmmm, maybe i DO have something else!!" seems to be working so far!!
  2. i've been taking hints from some of the more devious local hiders, and using the wonders of the pacific northwest to help complicate hiding spots.. given as the areas i've been hiding stuff in usually have an abundance of good likely spots, i make sure to stick a cache in one that's not the obvious spot.. i've actually been around to watch a few people hunt one particular hide on many occassions. the FTF, and a few new cachers as well. it's interesting to watch the commonality of the search errors, and also cool to see the confirmation of how clues get interpreted by laziness, vs. actually looking at the environment. funny to see the light bulb pop up when they realize what they should be looking at, instead of what they "knew" was the right spot...including watching one person have a multi-stage micro IN HAND, and not realize it.. the couple of unconventional finds i've logged, i've passed under or within 1' of on numerous bushwhacks through the area, only to finally approach it from the right side, and see things just differently enough.. keep at it, you'll start looking at everything differently in no time at all!!
  3. hey peter, did you hand tint the sat photo or what? my photomaps can't do that yet!
  4. and i've never seen fingers fing... oh, wait a minute, there they go.... Otto on the simpsons.... best. line. ever..
  5. there's bound to be good caches in snohomish co.. there's phenomenal hikes available which usually=good caches.. i've not been caching that long, but i found out really quick that there's only so many parking lot micro's etc.. that hold my interest. it's more about a decent hike, or a pretty cool spot to get to. maybe spend some time hiding the kinds of caches you'd LIKE to be finding. might inspire someone to do the same!
  6. i'd love to have it because very few things are better FTF prizes for a new cache than a hard to find signature object that i've been fortunate enough to enjoy for a bit, then pass on.. (what i've done with a lot of the sig items i've found, either as trades or in new caches..) they REALLY bring out the FTF incentive... nice coin by the way!
  7. what, isn't that what you do on your weekends??
  8. might as well throw my .02 in here as well. i've managed to refrain from emailing folks about TC, even though i'd love to get more GC cachers involved than we've already got. i don't feel that spamming ANYONE is ever the way to get something done. Fledermaus, there's plenty of folks that know about the other games that can be played. if someone is interested, it's probably a better topic to discuss in person, at an event perhaps? being able to notice someone's reaction, and responding appropriately, will likely get you closer to the results you're seeking. there's also a lot of, misunderstanding i guess, about TC that seems to be fairly prevalent here. which is why, unless it's in a topic such as this, i'm not trying to sway anyone on Geocaching.com's forums to play a different game. not the place, or the audience really. to the rest of the forum members, please rest assured i have no intention of surprising your mailboxes with an email singing the praises of Terracaching, or any other site. If you meet me at an event, i may bring it up, but i'm just as happy to talk about Geocaching, which is what got me started in all this lunacy anyway!! the badge of "disgruntled ex-geocachers" still seems to be pinned on most of the membership at terracaching, and from what i've seen and know from dealing with folks there, it's just not true (at least in washington, or the seattle metro locals etc...) so, enough with the rambling..
  9. well, all i can say is i'm glad my area looks quite a bit different than the ones you are both referring to.
  10. yikes.. might be a bit longer on this one..
  11. except there's no smileys anywhere else! also, after checking through both sites for PA, there is a grand total of 1 cross listed cache. ????
  12. the best caches i've been to have been some really good hikes. i like the places caching takes me, longer and farther away from things the better. if you hide it, (and you already did!) they will hunt it! i wouldn't worry about how often or how soon it gets found either. the folks that make the effort will appreciate it.
  13. i don't think i'd list them on the GC page. referencing them is one thing, shoving them in someone's face is another.. as TC gets a few more members here and there, there will be plenty of folks looking for both when they go out.. they probably won't ever become the giant that GC is, which is fine, but the niche market they're cutting out is doing fine on its' own as well. if you must, mention your TC in the log, but leave it out of the cache page, other than just a mention that other caches are available on other sites. folks should be able to figure it out..
  14. finally found post i was looking for. edited this one as i can't delete it for some reason..
  15. wow, that's a bit of an aggressive stance on the homeless don't ya think??? in my area, they tend to keep to themselves for the most part. sleeping homeless folks don't really bother me. wide awake tweekers rummaging through my car in front of my house really piss me off though. and we have NO shortage of those scumbags in pierce county washington, meth capital on more than a few lists... if you have any concerns about the safety of the spot, you'd probably do best to go with your first instincts and find another spot. if they move on eventually, go for it..
  16. i hosted one to help payback the property manager in a really cool area i've got a couple of caches placed. it's a great area that i've known about for years, but most people don't even though they drive right by it.. it was really cool to meet some local cachers, and it's the first volunteer thing i've done in forever. i'll definitely plan or attend a few others!!
  17. that's a good idea! i found a likely spot for an ammo can, as a stand alone cache, hadn't thought about using the caches as bait in problem spots.. maybe if i've got time i'll do it, otherwise my existing cache and the new ammo can will have to suffice.. although i could always go out and try night hiding.... :0
  18. Hi everyone. I've got a CITO event coming up on april 16. 05 and am planning to place a few event day only caches, to be given away as prizes at end of day. i'm probably placing 1 ammo can and a couple of decon kits, as the area is fairly good sized, but not huge. As the containers themselves are going to be the prizes, and i'm not expecting a huge turnout, what would you put in them as swag for the day? they will all be stocked with rite-in-the-rain notebooks as logs as well. i'm covering some of the refreshments, and other incidentals as well for the event. just wanted some input on this if possible! thanks in advance..
  19. i found a stoner's stash up on tiger mt. near seattle while hunting a cache. funnier because i followed the geo tracks to find it!! does this make me a stoner muggle? and yes, i did leave a note about better hiding..
  20. you could at that!! i've seen notes such as that myself, although i've found that the finding of said caches tends to result in a bit more mileage.. if it's your cache, do what you want. if it someone else's, be discreet.. no harm no foul..
  21. try searching neodymium on ebay if you're looking for good deals.. there's always a ton of varieties of shapes and sizes available too. don't get them near your monitor, credit cards, or tv!! and the big ones will smash your finger if it gets in the way. old computer hard drives have some nice ones in them as well, kind of a pain to get them out, but....
  22. caching in short sleeves rocks... i started right after christmas, and this is just way too cool to have weather this nice already. even more excuses to get out and around. nice trillium shot! i wasn't expecting that yet!
  23. i stumbled onto terracaching awhile back, right after getting started here. there was a bit of "disgruntled" forum flaming for awhile, but it seems to have died off. people now seem to get that it's ok to have a variety of flavors for caching. i haven't been doing this that long, but found navicache to be a bit lacking. i don't have a problem with GC caches either, but wanted to see what TC was about. the sponsor thing kind of threw me off as well, but i've since discovered that it's not some big scary elitist thing. i sponsor pretty much anyone who takes the time to write a brief note about where they are, a bit about themselves, etc.. and basically am providing them an opportunity to get into the site and check it out if there happen to be no sponsors local to them just yet. one nice thing about the sponsorship model is you can drop unresponsive sponsors, or seek out someone a bit more like-minded if your version of caching differs. and i do like the rating system as well, something that has been being brought up a bit more often in forums here lately. i don't see it being implemented here, when it exists somewhere else already. as stated by many prior posts, this game is played by everyone in their own way. i hunt and place on both sites, for different reasons. i don't bash either site, there's just no point. then again, the "nashville micro" issue is a situation that just wouldn't occur on TC, due to immediate peer reaction. if the community at large in your area is against something, you can nip it in the bud, quickly. and i'm sure there are some less than ideal caches that slip through occasionally, but the rating system will catch up to those eventually as well. the points system thing is a neat side-game, but apparently takes awhile for the scoring to sync up to reality, and as it's still only what? 5 months old?? it's still growing up. anyway, terracachers aren't elitist. the emphasis on quality isn't a "we're better than anyone else" attitude, i see it as more of a "i'm going to put a lot more effort into this so it will benefit my score in the long run, and provide a good reason for someone to seek this out" as opposed to the simple smiley for a good cache, great cache, or horrible film can in an ivy cluster in an abandoned dump. at the very least, check it out. sign up. email me if you'd like a sponsor. if there's nothing currently in your area, you can help BUILD your areas version of what a quality cache is... that doesn't appeal to anyone here? i still actively visit GC just as often, and utilize this site for completely different reasons. it's nice to be able to check on an area, and find a huge list of interesting caches to hunt for. and GC is what got me started in my new favorite hobby. if you aren't quite sure about terracaching.com, at least get on it, and ask there. the forums are pretty friendly, people are as helpful as they are here, and everyone is new there, and learning along with you. snoogans said it best, there are many lanes on the geocaching highway, and i happily drive them all without blowing past the toll booths. (or something to that effect.) sorry for the rambling post. back to the topic!
  24. that sounds great if you're not gonna be away from the car for any length of time, but with the hikes i go on, no way am i leaving that much bait in a vehicle. i've actually gotten pretty low tech, gps and notes written on a small sheet of paper for the days caches when i'm out and about. what's best is when you transpose descriptions and spend 1/2 an hour looking for a specific tree configuration that is NOT UNIQUE to the area you happen to be in, instead of where you should be looking for it... makes for a fun day though..
